I’ve been traveling, ‘taking photos’ with my iPhone XR, but now I’m back in the game, at least digitally...

Drove across the country, started fine furniture making school. I get one day off a week, and this is the first place I visited on my cherished weekends.
It didn’t disappoint.
One Day in New England
I wake up at 6:00 am in the back of my car: AT treailhead in Franconia Notch State Park. By 6:30 I’m on the Falling Water’s Trail, and walking the ridge, totally alone, as the sun rises over the White Mountains. By 11 am I’m in my car, driving with the windows down and sunroof open on undulating, uninterrupted New Hampshire and Maine roads. At 7pm, I’m watching whales dance and spout off the Bristol coast. A magical day.

Perhaps The Best 12 Mile Backpacking Trip In Oregon - Timberline Trail, Mt Hood

Silver Star Mountain - Southern Washington
The hardest part of this hike is getting to the trailhead without a high-clearance vehicle. We battered an AWD Honda CRV to get there, but it was so worth it. After only a few hundred yards, views of snow-capped St. Helens, Rainier, Adams, Jefferson, and Hood surrounded us. The wildflowers are just starting to bloom, the light on the mountains was magical, and the mountains offered a welcome reprieve from the 100* temperatures in Portland.
I can’t wait to go back for a backpacking trip, and to see what the mountains look like in the autumn, with scorched grass and crisper air.
I set off on the PCT hoping to hike 2650 miles, but decided I’d had enough after 109 (plus a lot of road walking). 5 hiking days felt like a month, and two of those days I hiked 26 and 35 miles. I was nearly bitten by a rattlesnake, I survived 110*+ heat in the desert, and walked along edges of mountains that made my palms sweat and my knees weak. All along the way are trail angels and people going out of their way to help and welcome PCT hikers, and the community, to me, is almost as impressive as the hiking itself. A big thank you to anyone that offered a ride, or a place to stay, or ignored how bad we all smelled to make life a little bit easier. Thru-hiking really comes down to this: adjusting your perspective to be reminded that it’s the little things that make a difference.
