Just came up with this (and I haven’t watched The Office in years) so feel free to tell me I’m wrong:

Mindy’s stories are clearly based on her & BJ. The characters aren’t them but they are the blueprint. She’s been processing their relationship through media for over a decade.

Kelly & Ryan are their relationship as seen from the outside. It’s up and down and no one ever knows if they’re together. It’s dramatic and off putting to other people.

Mindy & Danny are their relationship as it existed in her memory maybe after a breakup she didn’t fully understand. It’s confusing and toxic and Danny doesn’t feel consistently written.

Devi & Ben are their relationship as it felt to them on the inside. The ups and downs make sense. It’s not senselessly chaotic. There’s a reason for it all. They love each other but they also trigger each other and they’re growing up together.

I think we didn’t see Ben’s full arc clearly because Mindy didn’t get to see it clearly herself? There are things you realize about yourself and your healing that you can only articulate in your 30s, definitely not in high school. I think my frustration with Ben is that I am in my 30s and he was having a very 18 yr old arc. I wanted him to teach me something new about trust but that’s not what the show set out to do.

I don't want to live a life where I'm constantly longing for a moment that is no longer. Everything seems so beautiful in retrospect, but when a moment is not stuck between my fingers anymore I yearn to have its essence near me. No matter how lonely or painful it might've been. I'm learning to keep those sweet memories of what once was tucked away, not constantly needing to relive them. But finding gratitude in what once was. The joy. The lessons. The sorrow. I know one day I'll look back to this day and long for this kind of fullness.

But like… the picture that really just completely undid me, for this party which surely was more money than many weddings -

it’s not a horse themed gender reveal party. It’s a gender reveal party FOR A HORSE. I can’t even like imagine the life that would lead to hosting a gender reveal party for a not-yet-born horse. Think abt getting an invitation to this. the cis are at it again.
