Border Collies vs Working Sheepdogs--UK

Ok dogblr. Help me understand! I’m watching the live stream of the agility competitions at Crufts and I’ve noticed dogs that in the states would be called Border Collies (i think) being called Working Sheepdogs. Can someone please explain the difference to me. I’ve noticed the working sheepdogs have more varied coat coloration.

From what I understand, it’s really basic: the dogs aren’t pedigreed BCs. They’re likely to basically just be the landrace bred sheepdog that may be like mostly BCs, but still have a bit of Collie, some of Joe Bob’s mutt down the road that herds sheep, etc. The BC was originally a landrace herdy type breed, and working sheepdogs are basically back to that. They may be genetically almost exactly the same as working BCs, but they’re usually only bred for working - thus, pedigrees don’t matter. Instinct does, style does, stamina does. So they only breed the dogs that work, and work well, it just happens to look like a BC.

Yeah, the basic breed type is very common in the UK & so if a dog looks like a border collie & acts like a border collie but isn’t registered with the Kennel Club and/or the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS - the registry for working BCs), then it’s technically considered a “Working Sheepdog”.

The vast majority of these sheepdogs will probably come from very long lines of dogs that everyone would recognise as being “border collies” (& many will have at least some registered ancestry). Having said that, some farmers certainly do still out-cross to other breeds!

If I competed in dog sports with either Barney or Flynn, they’d get registered as “working sheepdogs”. 

Below are dad’s partner’s 3 KC registered “border collies”. They’re clearly of the same type as Barney & Flynn, just more standardised:

ps Theoretically, I could turn my bog-standard “Working Sheepdogs” into the genuine article. The ISDS still has a “register on merit” scheme, whereby those dogs who can prove they work/trial successfully are eligible to be registered & entered into the stud book as Border Collies. It’s quite a rigorous test but even a few working bearded collies have been admitted as honorary “border collies” in the past… explaining why you occasionally see a BC with a beard ;-)

What kind of coats are these?

They are from Hurtta http://www.hurtta.com 

The blue one is Chill Stopper and the grey one is Frost Jacket. The material is similar to softshell, it's not too warm so it's great for dogs with double coat. Shadow is almost 10 y/o and she never had to wear any type of coat but she had her back and belly shaved due to surgery, so I bought her one recently. Seeley on the other hand is not a fan of cold weather, so he has a whole collection of Hurtta coats.

I really like these photos I took few weeks back, while trekking in woods with my father. The weather was lovely, a bit chilly but with a lot of sun and with patches of fog in some areas which made some creepy ass effects. It was a great day and I remember it fondly, especially these days because the weather we have right now IS. JUST. AWFUL.

Pajama party! :) 

I love rainy autumn days when the woods are silent, filled only with the light sound of rain. Also there's no one around so you can just walk aimlessly and let your mind wander. I've had an amazing weekend and judging from the amount of mud on my doggies, they had a blast too. :) More photos will follow.
