Philosophers of previous eras identified the means of oppression used by the establishment in their period. Their activists have fought for and won better lives for future generations many times. Feudalism, the Church, ownership of the means of production, all these have been overcome.

I, a working person, believe those who say that easy addictions are now numbing our engagement in making a better life. They are blunting our opposition to those who reap the benefits of our daily work.  I choose to turn away from the habits of ease.

德化白瓷 Déhuà báicí/dehua white porcelain

Dehua County, located in Quanzhou, Fujian, China, is renowned for its white porcelain.

Its kilns flourished during the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song dynasties(960–1279 CE), peaked in the Yuan and Ming periods, and remain famous today, particularly for their white porcelain. Fired at high temperatures, the unglazed porcelain exhibits a smooth, jade-like texture, appearing crystal-clear and pure white.

Dehua white porcelain is renowned for its "high-toughness thin-bodied高韧薄胎瓷衣" technique, a breakthrough in ceramic craftsmanship that achieves exceptional strength in ultra-thin structures. This technology enables the creation of porcelain pieces with egg-shell thinness (0.2–0.5 mm) while maintaining remarkable durability, making it a hallmark of Dehua's artistry. However, not every piece of Dehua white porcelain employs this technique, as it involves significantly higher production costs.

so in the victoria & Albert museum's huge ceramics gallery which people never seem to know about, there was a temporary exhibition by a 4th generation porcelain worker from dehua & some of her work v which particularly took me out were these books - books which looked as if they had hand pressed paper pages with ragged edges, being tugged open and ruffled by the breeze. they looked like a film still. they looked light as air. there was a drapery of fine silk fluttering as well. ALL PORCELAIN.

I had a moment when I was out taking these last week where I realized I just simply had not looked at the moon in a long time.

It's evening, and you're rowing. A low, tidy boat with long oars carries you away from the crickets. Each slow sweep takes you quite a distance and your shoulders welcome the stretch. Your bow wave gently rustles against the prow with the beginning of each stroke. Darkness deepens. Stars assert their presence. There's an island ahead to your left, small, with two or three indistinct lights visible. The air is cool but not uncomfortable, and you continue at your own pace. The island is behind you when a frog croaks. It's in the boat. You stop rowing and lay back. Only tiny waves lap the right side of the boat, there is no other sound. With the distant lights of the opposite shore out of your field of view, the milky way stretches out before you. The frog croaks again.

Video game mechanic concept: There's one NPC that you are free to go talk to just whenever, just like all the other ones, and there's also times when you have no choice but to go talk to them (unless you go out of your way to solve the particular problem that'd require that with another solution that takes absurd amounts of effort), but here's the kicker: The NPC is a turboyapper and you are now trapped. This is a survival horror mini game.

You can either try randomly guessing the right dialogue options that allow you to end the conversation and escape, or solve a series of quick time event puzzles at the right speed, that allows you to say the right thing that ends the conversation and allows you to leave the conversation without hurting their feelings. If you're playing an evil playthrough, there's been some sort of a mean choice you've probably done before this point that gives you the option to end the conversation by simply hurting their feelings.

If you're not hurting anyone in a real and tangible way, if you're respecting the rights and comfort of others, nobody- NOBODY has the moral grounds to stand against you, and to hell with them if they try.

Garlic harvest!

This is about a pound and a quarter of softneck garlic, grown from a quarter pound of cloves. Yes it is funky looking!

Here's the hardneck garlic! This is also a pound and a quarter. They look much neater than the softneck did, with nice tight wrappers in almost all of them and no loose cloves.

A grand fantasy city-state that has developed a consistent, uniform system of "best by"-dates, not just for food safety reasons and to reduce food waste, but to also significantly reduce crime and conflict between residents. The matter at hand is goblins.

Goblin residents of the city are legal citizens with equal rights just the same as everyone else, but their natural lifestyle differs dramatically from the rest of the peoples living in the city. They are scavengers by nature, having no problems with eating carrion, overripe fruits and plants, and building everything they own from things that other races throw away as junk and trash. As the city produces plenty of waste that goblins would love to take and the city is glad to be rid of, any well-organised city is not just a paradise for goblins, but welcomes them with open arms. They save the city a fortune in waste disposal costs.

Problems mainly arise by differing ideas of what counts as "discarded". Goblins are unfairly labelled as thieves, when they are merely opportunistic and optimistic by nature, and will interpret any unclear situation to their own benefit, and will argue "how was I supposed to know that you still wanted it?" over things that looked lovely and were left unattended. And while yoinked items of clothing and other tools are easily returned or financially reimbursed (paying for what they already took is the only use that goblins have for money, which they do not steal), but foodstuff is gone faster than you can blink.

So, the city needed to determine laws for how to define and clearly label when consumable goods are no longer fit to most peoples' consumption, both to help people keep track on how old their groceries are, and also to mark them for goblins. So even though the food that's past the date on it can still be good to eat, it might also be gone by the next time you reach for it.

Night bloomers (Oenothera missouriensis and Oenothera caespitosa):

These guys make flowers that open at dusk and then close in the morning. Some varieties go from closed to fully open in 30 seconds!

I started these from seed over a year ago. I had intended to plant them last year after they got a foothold in some pots, but events got away from us and they overwintered in the pots.

Then last fall, the city planted a tree in our front yard. This spring, we put that brown metal edging around it, put cardboard down to kill the grass, and added about twelve cubic feet of dirt on top. Now the night bloomers have no competition.

Last night we saw a band whose second album came out, like, six weeks ago and that's pretty much ideal for me. Small venue, affordable tickets, dark, loud, new.
