When Kusuo arose, he woke to the sound of Kaidou and Nendou nearby messing around in the water disturbing his slumber.
He closed his eyes and sighed deeply when he realized he couldn't explore the peace of rest again for a while, yet. He still had to deal with his friends, who were more like children he was forced to babysit all the time.
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯... 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳?
He groggily rubbed his eyes as he looked out to the two men in the water. Kaidou was squealing about not being able to swim, and Nendou was influencing him to swim anyway. Despite Nendou's best efforts, Kaidou was flailing around in three inches of water. It was probably easier to scale a building without a harness than it was to drown in three inches of water. But Kaidou somehow was...somewhat succeeding.
If he were somebody else, then he would've gone out there and possibly helped them—but let's be real, they're far from help—however...there's nothing more that Kusuo hates than attention being on him. And he knew that if he went over to that pair of idiots then it would be on him. Inevitably!
So he simply watched from afar, letting the warm sun hit his pale skin. It wasn't often that he had time to laze in the heat rays of the sun. Might as well make the most of it.
Unfortunately for him, no matter how good the sun felt, the thoughts of every single person around him went straight into his head, practically prodding at his sanity. Of course he'd gotten used to it by now, gotten used to the constant swarm of thought's that weren't his own in his head. He'd gotten so used to it that his germanium ring made him feel incredibly vulnerable. Even a light graze on the shoulder had him fully standing up from getting caught off guard. It scared him a bit—yes the being touched part, it startled him! But that's not what he meant. He's scared of being vulnerable. Who know's what could happen if he'd lost control of his powers for too long, or fully lost his powers, even!
He mentally filed through the thoughts of many before he had picked up a new voice in the debacle of a choir in his head—a choir that didn't sound like something that would play when you were knocking on heaven's door...maybe when you were down under.
The voice was one he recognized. Y/N. They weren't thinking much, since they had also just woken up. The main thought on their mind was how bright the sun was.
Y/N brought their hand up to shield their eyes, the shadow casting over their upper face, providing a temporary blockage from the raging ball of fire in the sky. One that threatened blindness the second you opened your eyes from a deep, or light, slumber.
He didn't shoot much of a glance. He'd shown enough interest in them today. They could handle the rest themselves, they could regulate their feelings fine, they were nearly an adult.
Y/N looked over to him when they noticed his glance. Their eyes remained on him for a good second or two, before they looked away from him, looking out to the sea.
After a few seconds of slightly awkward silence between the two, they spoke up. "So...are you planning on going in the water?"
"Not with them out there." Kusuo said, not tearing his gaze from the water.
Y/N hummed in understanding. They shifted back into their seat a bit more, wrapping their arms around themselves. They didn't know how long they were asleep for, but it must not have been long, considering the sun had barely moved from it's spot, hovering the horizon.
Y/N's eyes fluttered when the sunlight bounced off of the waves of the water, reflecting a bright orang-ish pink color back at them. It definitely wasn't the bright, glaring white that it was earlier today when the sun was at it's peak in the sky. It was nice to just be able to relax and look at the vast waters of the Pacific.
"Hey, L/N!" A chipper voice sounded from nearby, and Y/N looked over to see Yumehara, holding a beachball in her hands. "You up for a game?" She called out.
Y/N blinked. A game sounded...fun. Why not? "Yeah sure..okay!" They said.
Yumehara smiled before her gaze turned to their atire, she laughed gently and put a hand on her hip. "You're gonna have to change into something more appropriate though!"
Y/N looked down at themselves and hummed. "Oh, uh...yeah, I'll do it."
Yumehara laughed in excitement. "Okay! Me and Teruha...—Kokomi—will be waiting by the court!" She smiled as she gestured over to where the temporary net was set up in the sand.
Kokomi stood there in all her glory, her beautiful, deep blue silk strands being tossed in the gentle breeze, her smooth skin, damp from the water she had previously been in, glistening in the warm sunlight. It was clear why people were obsessed with her. She was perfect, in every way.
Y/N trailed their eyes over Teruhashi, who placed a hand on her cheek with a smile, pretending to be flattered by a compliment from a boy who had been watching her play—of course it fed her ego, but she'd gotten so used to compliments everywhere she went that she was hardly flattered anymore.
They didn't notice this, though. They were too focused on the way her baby pink swimsuit perfectly encaptured the gentle hourglass form of her body, the ruffles of the pink and white fabric adding touches that were so...her.
Y/N felt themselves tilt their head, before realizing they still needed to change. They didn't want to hold up their friends any longer, fearing that they would get annoyed from wastes of time.
They quickly made their way to the changing room, pulling out their swimsuit from their bag. They unwrinkled it from the crumpled up way they had it, from anxiously shoving it into their bag earlier that morning.
They held up the thin fabric before them, analyzing it with their own eyes, imagining their form in it. Would they look good? Maybe. Definitely not as good as Kokomi did, though. Not that it mattered. It didn't, but maybe they want to feel good about themselves.
They let out a heavy sigh as they slipped on their swimsuit. It felt like they took plastic wrap and tightly wrapped it around themselves. They felt incredibly vulnerable. You could see every tiny little scar, every little mark, every freckle...every flaw—and to be frank, it didn't feel great.
Once they hesitantly made their way to the mirror, their gaze fell onto themselves. Instantly they compared themselves to Teruhashi. Their skin wasn't flawless like hers, they had their own scars, their body didn't look as good as hers. They felt as if they had chosen the most unflattering thing to wear.
As they stared at themselves, they remembered their friends waiting for them. They took one last deep breath, trying to convince themselves that they looked okay. Their own words, though they gave their best efforts, didn't quite work on themselves. No wonder they were bad at comforting people, they couldn't even comfort themselves, and they were the one person they knew the best.
When they finally stepped out from the changing area, they heard a voice. "You look fine." A monotone voice said, and they jumped. Their gaze quickly turned to see the thin, pink haired boy standing there with his hands in the pockets of his swimshorts.
The sighed in exasperation. "Where the hell did you come from?" Y/N said in mild annoyance.
"Does it matter?" Kusuo said. "Now let's go." He began walking down to the shore and expecting them to follow. "You do want to play that game, don't you?" He said, looking over his shoulder.
Y/N stared at him for a moment. "...yeah. Right."
