Reblogging this on ALL my blogs because holy shit is it useful
My mother is all into homesteading and off-grid living videos right now. Every time I check up on her, this is what she wants to talk about.
It gives her a sense of peace and purpose I guess. Which is good, she’s been struggling to find that with her injuries and condition. She’s learning skills, and feeling prepared for “the worst”. Like I can’t get her to stop watching conspiracy theory bullshit on YouTube so at least this kind of content alleviates some of the anxiety the other content amplifies, because she feels like she can do something now to secure her safety later.
But to get through these conversations, I have to tell myself— hey, if natural disaster comes our way, some of this might be useful. But I know she’s not just thinking a big storm or natural disaster. She’s preparing for the collapse of society. And I don’t know how to break it to her that we wouldn’t survive that. You can make long lasting candles with crisco? Cool. Where you going to by crisco when society collapses? You’ll stock up now? Ok cool. What will you do when it runs out? Honestly, before it runs out, what will you do when people with guns come to take your various stockpiled supplies?
If we hit a point where society collapses, we’re done for. Food, medicine, etc. we can’t survive without society, without a world where people are working together trying to help each other out.
So, I’ll go through with this shit in the name of natural disaster preparedness, and because it helps her. But that’s as far as I’m willing to put energy into it. I refuse to prepare for, bet on, or hope for the collapse of society. I’d rather spend my energy trying to prevent society collapsing, what little part I can play in that. I’d rather spend my energy supporting people in my community. I’d rather work and build towards a better future, not prepare for the worst.
OP, if your mother is physically able to do the following, I strongly suggest it:
Get her into a fibercraft. Sewing, knit, crochet. Because here’s the thing:
At first, you can pitch it as “we’re all still gonna need clothes and these idiots with their doomsday bunkers can’t even thread a needle.” But after awhile—let this take a bit of time, not so long that she gets bored but long enough that she’s like “I’ve DONE this already”—introduce her to a slightly more advanced concept. She was practicing on circle skirts? Check out how to make darts. Crochet blankets? There are SO MANY cool stitches.
And then when the craft has a decent grip as a hobby….THEN you introduce her to a crafting social group.
One of the best ways to stop people falling down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole is to make sure they have active and diverse community, and being able to make tangible things has been shown to have a positive influence on mental health. If cost is a concern, I literally have spare crochet hooks I could send you to get her started and all I’d ask for them is cost of postage, which is like. Maybe three bucks. You can even find halfway decent yarn at the dollar store now. It’s not amazingly high quality, but it’s good enough for practice and learning.
I cannot recommend the above enough. My dad is a prepper and was falling in with a militia. Like the white supremacy militias.
So I started casually mentioning i wanted to do Search and Rescue- knowing my father is incredibly competitive and will try and out do me.
I was all "but we can't rely on the government to find people!"
Now he has been on 6 different tours in the US. He is a field commander and the most successful in state history.
He independently made a partnership with a Black and Missing coalition and partners with them on searches for Black Ohio and.
He called me the other day so proud he has " a Trans and a nonbinary whatever that is" on his search team. So is he perfect? No. But now he isn't toting a gun around and threatening people.
He's getting better. Sure he built a secret bunker in the basement. But he's recovered multiple bodies and reunited people with loved ones.
Sure we still can't have a conversation without him divulging into some bigoted speak here and there.
But he's been lead in recovering teens trafficked from our state and successfully recovered them in Georgia in 10 hours.
Sure he isn't perfect. But he didn't fall completely and maybe he will become even better on his own.
The secret is: is they aren't going to become themselves again but you can help them not crumble completely. You can still have your parent even if they are a bit.. ahhhh.... hurtful. But they aren't hurting anyone and that's the important part.
We are what we become. So help people become in a good direction.
in my experience if you're learning a language but you're worried about not pronouncing it right or sounding ridiculous in front of native speakers, I'm here to tell you that most people do not care. they don't care if you have an accent or if your mother tongue is peeking through, because in all honesty, everyone has an accent. it's unfair and frankly unrealistic to expect people to bear no remnants of their native tongue when speaking another. you've spent your entire life speaking your language, interacting with the world in it; your understanding of language is built on your native one and its natural sounds. no one can expect you to entirely shift how your brain processes words and sounds. most native speakers will just appreciate you trying at all. if it's comprehensible, if the gist of what you're saying gets across, then it's good enough. if you're trying, your accent is fine.
everyone saying "but the french-!" you're absolutely correct. this is a general statement to which french is the exception
Part of the reason why the French are so aggressive towards foreign accents is, apart from general rudeness of Parisians specifically, because the French government has spent the better part of the last two centuries aggressively eliminating every accent. I am not talking about foreign accent here. I am talking about French accents, being made illegal, being beaten out of children, being used to legitimate violence against anyone who doesn't sound like an upper middle class Parisian, for two hundred years. So the French have this very strong cringe / aggressive reaction to foreign accents, because it is still very much disabling to have any kind of noticeable accent in France, and how dare other countries be proud of theirs, you know?

The more I see the characters on this poll, the more I really think that the french Tumblr community must be bigger than we let on because WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE RATZ ???
Well for the submission it only takes a single frenchman. We'll have to truly see how much of tumblr are secretly french when it comes time for that character's poll.

“My body, my choice” only makes sense when someone else’s life isn’t at stake.
Fun fact: If my younger sister was in a car accident and desperately needed a blood transfusion to live, and I was the only person on Earth who could donate blood to save her, and even though donating blood is a relatively easy, safe, and quick procedure no one can force me to give blood. Yes, even to save the life of a fully grown person, it would be ILLEGAL to FORCE me to donate blood if I didn’t want to.
See, we have this concept called “bodily autonomy.” It’s this….cultural notion that a person’s control over their own body is above all important and must not be infringed upon.
Like, we can’t even take LIFE SAVING organs from CORPSES unless the person whose corpse it is gave consent before their death. Even corpses get bodily autonomy.
To tell people that they MUST sacrifice their bodily autonomy for 9 months against their will in an incredibly expensive, invasive, difficult process to save what YOU view as another human life (a debatable claim in the early stages of pregnancy when the VAST majority of abortions are performed) is desperately unethical. You can’t even ask people to sacrifice bodily autonomy to give up organs they aren’t using anymore after they have died.
You’re asking people who can become pregnant to accept less bodily autonomy than we grant to dead bodies.
reblogging for commentary
But, assuming the mother wasn’t raped, the choice to HAVE a baby and risk sacrificing their “bodily autonomy” is a choice that the mother made. YOu don’t have to have sex with someone. Cases of rape aside, it isn’t ethical to say abortion is justified. The unborn baby has rights, too.
First point: Bodily autonomy can be preserved, even if another life is dependent on it. See again the example about the blood donation.
And here’s another point: When you say that “rape is the exception” you betray something FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN about your own argument.
Because a fetus produced from sexual assault is biologically NO DIFFERENT than a fetus produced from consensual sex. No difference at all.
If one is alive, so is the other. If one is a person, so is the other. If one has a soul, then so does the other. If one is a little blessing that happened for a reason and must be protected, then so is the other.
When you say that “Rape is the exception” what you betray is this: It isn’t about a life. This isn’t about the little soul sitting inside some person’s womb, because if it was you wouldn’t care about HOW it got there, only that it is a little life that needs protecting.
When you say “rape is the exception” what you say is this: You are treating pregnancy as a punishment. You are PUNISHING people who have had CONSENSUAL SEX but don’t want to go through a pregnancy. People who DARED to have consensual sex without the goal of procreation in mind, and this is their “consequence.”
And that is gross.
^ THIS. This is this this THIS THIS THIS. THIS!!!!!
This is probably the strongest and well worded/supported argument for abortion that I have ever read.
WHY THE FUCK HAS TUMBLR FLAGGED THIS?! i’M FUCKING FURIOUS!!!
Yep, this was flagged for me too. Which is why I’m going to reblog it several time until Tumblr implodes.
This!!!!
This explains it all pretty well. My take on abortion has always been “why the fuck are you asking me? I am not capable of getting pregnant? I shouldn’t really have a say in this argument because it is none of my damn business? Also I do think that taking bodily autonomy away from women is kinda fucked.”
*very, extremely fucked
Personally for me, I think abortion should be allowed in case something happens. Not because you get pregnant, but because a complication like the baby dies in you or something. Or a cancer. I could be wrong, and I’ll accept when I am wrong, but this is just my personal standpoint right now.
I’m gonna say this as gently as I can:
You’re very statement has already killed since Roe vs. Wade was overturned. It is because these very situations came up and, because abortion is denied “except in special cases,” nobody would perform the very much needed procedures until pain, suffering, and death had already resulted.
Want something closer to what can happen to you? Imagine finding out you had cancer and lawmakers telling you doctors can do nothing until it’s stage 4, a “special circumstance”. When it’s terminal. When your odds of surviving are so low that they won’t even try to save your life.
That’s what having “special circumstances” does. They have no purpose other than to control and kill.
Now I feel horrible, thank you for telling me! I can understand that I was wrong and I never meant any harm when I said what I said. I hope I can be forgiven and I hope I didn’t come off and cruel or uneducated. I will defiantly research the topic more!
Hey, it’s hard to take new information like this gracefully, so kudos for that.
I just want to say that your gut feeling of “abortion should be available in case someone needs it” and feeling uncomfortable with the idea of it being used when it’s “not needed” isn’t a *bad* instinct. It feels very grounded and logical and compassionate.
But the devil is in the details. Who gets to decide when it’s needed? How do you prove that you qualify? Who do you need to prove your qualification to? How long will that take? What happens if different authorities disagree on whether or not you qualify? Every barrier to access prolongs ANYONE getting this care, and makes it more likely for people to get caught in the cracks and suffer. And that’s what we’ve seen in places where these restrictions have been put in place.
But there ARE ways to help reduce the number of abortions *other* than restrictions to access. Improved access to contraceptives, improved access to prenatal health care, more resources for people in domestic abuse situations, better parental leave policies, more funding for child care, Medicare, low income housing, foodstamps. When you make pregnancy (and parenthood) less dangerous, more affordable, and less potentially damaging to a person’s quality of life, then fewer people will feel like abortion is their best option.
Making pregnancy a *better* experience for *more* people is the way to reduce abortions while still making it accessible to people who “need” it (and trusting that each individual is capable of deciding what choice is best for them.)

Was at a restaurant recently where they'd converted both their bathrooms to gender neutral (nice) and as i was washing my hands a guy came out a stall and saw me & said, "Oh!!! my god!! Is this the ladies'?? 😨😨😨😨 I'm so sorry!!!!!!" and I was like "No, it's fine, it's gender neutral" and he goes ".......Oh. uh. Ok." And then walks straight out. without washing his hands.
Sir. You need to be less embarrassed about hypothetically crossing some arbitrary gender barrier and more embarrassed about getting your Peepee DooDoo Shit Hands all over this fucking RESTAURANT
"Separate bathrooms are unnecessary" false. Actually we need every building to have TWO gender neutral restrooms, one for People Who Wash Their Fucking Hands and the other for people who don't, which is actually just a door leading to a 10ft pit with scorpions at the bottom. And also a mandatory power point presentation on disease vectors
Actually my last job had two gender neutral bathrooms & we had all unanimously decided that one would be the pee bathroom and the other one the poop/crying bathroom. 10/10 would recommend
