_______________
The most beautiful things arise from the most adverse chaos. You are never prepared for what fate has in mind. These young children will understand that life is full of surprises, some good and others just not what we expect. Experience is what gives that touch to life. It all starts here, a summer sunset in the Koopa Kingdom. The inhabitants enjoy the calm and serenity that the soft summer breeze welcomes them. Everyone here lives in peace and prosperity.
To their surprise, they spot something unusual in the distance. Someone, with giant steps and with a red hood, runs carrying something in his arms, protecting it. That someone has large and heavy attributes, so it can be felt from far away. The people of the nearest town wonder what or who it is, so Koopa Troopa guards go into defense mode with their spears. The hooded being stops before them.
- who are you? -one of the guards points out while pointing his gun.
- Don't worry, my people... -says that person with a thick and deep voice- I'm sorry if I came so unexpectedly. We had a little altercation in the neighboring kingdom, please don't be alarmed.
At that moment, that man discovers himself, to which the guards, surprised, bow before him.
Guard: K-King Bowser, excuse me! I didn't recognize you (looking up) in that hood.
Bowser: It's okay (interrupting and at the same time taking off his hood) as I said, there was an altercation a few moments ago and I had to intervene. I need you to help me go to my castle. Here in my arms I have two children who need to be taken care of
They quickly head to the castle. Those children are also Koopa, one of them is smaller, with short dark green hair; the other is bigger, with purple hair and longer. Both have light scratches and dirt from dust. They are sleeping due to fatigue and the long journey. Upon arrival it is already night, one of the royal guards approaches.
- Master Bowser, at your service! -Bowing-
Bowser: (walks over and whispers) Tell Kamek I'm here and I need him in my room. Also make sure that the children do not wake up
He says that retreating as the guard responds -at your command, my king- as he heads to a room going to the right. When that happens, two boys observe what happened behind the main stairs. These are also Koopas, one with elongated green hair and glasses, and another with cyan hair in a mohawk.
- What happened, Iggy? (whispers the smallest)
- I don't know, Larry… (Answers the eldest) but it must be important, I'm sure. Otherwise Dad Bowser wouldn't have gotten involved.
The king enters his room and carefully places the children in bed, covering them with a blanket. While looking at them with a somewhat sad look and gently caressing their cheeks.
Bowser: Oh my children… I'm sorry you have to go through this right now. I hope you can feel comfortable here with my kids. Together we will be a big family (saying that to himself, he kisses each one's forehead and sighs) it’s a promise.
At the door, Larry and Iggy are stealthily peeking. They both notice that there is someone else in their father's bed and they narrow their eyes to get a better look, but at that moment a magikoopa appears from behind and quickly pulls them away.
- what are you doing up so late? Your bedtime is over
Larry: ah! Kamek! S-sorry…
Iggy: I’m so sorry, Kamek… Larry was helping me with something, we are late. We saw dad bring someone over and I was curious.
Larry: me too, who are they?
Kamek: look: for now your father has to take care of them. There will be time to explain everything. For now go to sleep, it's already... (Looking at his watch) 10:35 p.m.
Larry: (yawning) but... I'm not sleepy... (squints his eyes)
Iggy: Come on, Larry (taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes) let's get some sleep.
After that, Iggy takes Larry and they go to their respective rooms. Kamek, for his part, enters where Bowser was but he took him to his office.
Kamek: Gosh! What happened, Master Bowser?
The King of the Koopa shook his head, looking at the two Koopas on the bed and turning sadly to Kamek, to which the magikoopa seems to have gotten the message, surprised and silent.
Kamek: So… it was true. Their parents died…
Bowser: (he looked down sadly) I couldn't do anything... when I arrived, the kingdom had already been attacked (tears falling)
Kamek: My King (puts his hand on top of Bowser's) you did what you could. You managed to save them, they are their legacy (looks at the boys) they have a future ahead of them, just like you have had from a very young age. Your best friend would be proud if you gave them that future (looks at Bowser) it's your turn to carry on his legacy.
With those words, Bowser comforts himself as he wipes his tears.
Bowser: Y-you're right! It won't be easy, but I'll try. I'll do it for these guys and for him. I will not give up
Kamek: I'm glad to hear that (smiles) Now, my lord, it's time to go to sleep. Tomorrow will be a day of many questions. There are already those who saw you with them (pointing to the bed)
Bowser: yes... I'm already imagining it. Anyway... (yawns) I'll settle the boys and go to sleep...
Suddenly, one of the children slowly wakes up and settles into bed.
- W-where am I? What do I do here? (the purple haired Koopa trying to clear his vision)
Bowser and Kamek realize this and go to him.
Bowser: Oh, you woke up! Well, this is my castle
- M-Mr. Bowser? Is it really you? Long time no see! (goes to hug him) Hello, Mr. Kamek! How are they?
Kamek: Well, my boy, I’m glad to see you again
Bowser: I'm fine, well…let's just say I'm better now, how about you, Mykey?
Mykey: I… (looking down a bit) well, I don't know where to start…
Bowser: (sighs) I know about your parents, I'm so sorry...
Mykey: Everything happened so fast, we didn't even have time to run away. (looks out the window)
Mykey told Bowser and Kamek about what happened at their home. That's how time went by
Mykey: …and now we're here…in your home. I hope we don't bother you.
Bowser: Not at all. You're welcome, you and your brother Bobby can stay as long as you like. This is also your house.
Kamek: That's right, lil’ Mykey. We will always have the doors open for you
Mykey: I appreciate it, Mr. Bowser, Mr. Kamek (bowing and then hugging both)
Breaking away from the hug, Bowser takes him back to his room and accommodates him along with his brother. For his part, Kamek leaves there and when he opens the door he finds Larry and Iggy again trying to listen and they fall forward, because they were attached to the door. The magikoopa put on a serious face and crossed his arms.
Iggy: um… I… I was looking for the bathroom (laughing as she ran away from there)
Larry didn't know what to do, so he exclaimed "Good night!" while smiling awkwardly while also running away
Kamek just shook his head as he laughed to himself. Afterwards, everyone went to sleep. In just one day a lot had happened. Mykey and Bobby were here to stay.
The next morning, Mykey wakes up, looking around and seeing that his younger brother was still sleeping, to which he decides to wake him up.
Mykey: Bobby! Little brother! (caressing his cheek) wake up… it's time to get up
The little boy moved from one side to the other until he slowly woke up. Mykey smiled when he saw him and then he gets up
Bobby: where am I? Where is mom? Dad?
Mykey was silent for a few moments, at which he walks over and sighs before telling him what Mykey could remember. Meanwhile, Kamek is in the kitchen preparing breakfast to which Larry arrives.
Larry: Hi Kamek! (sits at the dining room table)
The magikoopa turns and says -good morning, Larry. How did you sleep?-
Larry: fine (yawning and rubbing his eyes) but I'm still sleepy... (Saying that, he collapses his face on the table)
Kamek: That's why you need to go to bed early, dear
Turning to see Larry, he notices that he falls asleep again, so, after a sigh, he goes to wake him up by moving his shoulder, to which Larry wakes up again. Meanwhile, little by little Bowser's children arrive to settle at the table as Kamek prepares each one's breakfast. On the other hand, in Bowser's room Mykey and Bobby are still talking.
Mykey: That's why, little brother, we must be strong in these circumstances. Mr. Bowser will take care of us for a while.
Bobby nodding, wiping his tears and crestfallen says -I understand, brother...-
Mykey: come here (they hug)
At that moment, Bowser opens the door and approaches them.
Bowser: Good morning, guys. Did you sleep well?
Both brothers nodded. Bowser walks over to Bobby and strokes his hair.
Bowser: how big are you, little Bobby (who gives a little laugh) it's time for breakfast. Come on, I'll introduce you to the rest of the family
They walk through the halls and the brothers are surprised by how big and elegant it is. As Bobby marvels at the details of the infrastructure, Mykey talks with the king.
Mykey: Mr. Bowser. I wanted to ask… apart from you and Mr. Kamek, who else knows about us and the situation we are in?
Bowser: Don't worry, only we will know. For now it is very complicated.
Mykey: I got it, Mr. Bowser (looking at Bobby) brother I want you to keep it a secret please
Bobby: yes, no problem (smiling)
Mykey: good boy! (to Bowser) So...how's Ludwig? It has been a while since I saw him
Bowser: Okay, practicing his musical talents on the piano.
Mykey: I understand. But I'll try to be careful. Something unexpected can be difficult.
Bowser: right... it's been ten years since they haven't seen each other. But don't worry, little by little they will get to know each other again and you will see that everything will be better.
Mykey nods and after a few minutes they reach the dining room, Bowser addresses his children.
Bowser: good morning, my kids!
Everyone there welcomes you with good morning. Larry was a bit impatient to eat, as was one of the Koopa next to him, one with darker skin and a star-shaped mark on his left eye.
- I'm hungry! -exclaims that Koopa
Bowser: I know, Morton, but before we sit down to eat, I have something to tell you. It's important, so come here for a minute.
Before that the children stop being in their things and get up from their places directing their gaze before their father
Bowser: We have visitors. I hope you'll give him a warm welcome (stepping aside) come in, please.
Both, Mykey and Bobby, make an appearance and stand next to the king.
Bowser: They'll be here for a while. They are children of a great friend of mine, so I hope they get along. They are my children: Larry, the little one with light blue hair...
Larry: Hi!!!
Bowser: ...Morton, the star-shaped one.
Morton: here! (raising hand)
Bowser: ...Wendy, my only daughter...
Wendy: hello, dears
Bowser: ...Iggy, the boy with the big glasses...
Iggy: present!
Bowser: ...Roy, the greatest...
Roy: how are you, guys? (crossing arms, smiling)
Bowser: ...Lemmy, the Cross-Eyed one...
Lemmy: Hi-hi!!
Bowser: …my youngest son, Bowser Jr., better known as “Bowsy” or “Jr.”…
Jr.: H-hello… (waving shyly)
Bowser: …and…uh…where's Ludwig?
- are you calling me? -said a Koopa with wavy blue hair who was entering through the door on the left- sorry for the delay, I was fixing some things.
Bowser: Oh, just in time! This is Ludwig, my firstborn.
Ludwig: what did I miss?
Bowser: Ludwig, sons, this is Mykey and Bobby will be here for a while.
Mykey: nice to meet you. I am Mykey, I'm 17
Bobby: I am Bobby, I’m 10
Everyone there is surprised by the new arrivals. Ludwig stares at those boys, especially Mykey.
Ludwig: (thinking) I think I've seen him before... but I don't know from where... he's also a year older than me... gosh! Who will this boy be? I remember seeing it in…
As Ludwig leads her away in his thoughts, Mykey walks up to him and greets him, to which he offers his hand to shake. Ludwig comes back to reality.
Ludwig: (shaking her hand) Oh yeah! H-hello…
Mykey: (thinking) has he remembered me? It seems not much...
Bobby, meanwhile, catches Larry's attention.
Larry: (laughs) You're just as tall as me, great!
Bobby: (slightly blushing) nah, I'm still growing
Larry: (showing the language) better let's have breakfast. Come! Sit by my side
Larry grabs her hand and they go to take a seat. Jr., for his part, is also going to take his seat, but he is occupied by Bobby.
Jr: hey! That is my place!
Bobby notices those words
Bobby: oh, I am sorry! (preparing to stand)
Larry: oh come on Jr. let's make room for visitors
Jr.: B-but… and where do I sit?
Bowser: (bringing two more chairs) Relax, guys. In fact, there will be a small new provision.
Kamek: As you know, the order goes by age, always the youngest being next to me, the left and the oldest next to his father, to his right. Over time it settled in such a way that I have to take care of the youngest to date and so on until we reach Jr., our baby son.
Jr.: (blushing) yeah, yeah! But now Bobby is younger than me, so...
Bowser: (interrupting) Exactly, my cherub! Bobby will now be on your right, between you and Kamek, so now you will be between Larry and Bobby.
Larry: But can Bobby be by my side this time?
Jr. looked a bit annoyed and was looking at the walls somewhat uncomfortably and Bobby seems to have noticed.
Bobby: eh… I don't want to be a bother and…
Jr.: (sighing slightly) no, no… it's fine, no problem. Just for this time
Larry: Thanks, little bro! (smiling) come on, Bobby
The three settle into their new places. Kamek proceeds
Kamek: Larry, I know you're excited, but let's go easy, boy.
Larry: yeah, sorry (laughing nervously)
Kamek: Anyway… continuing… Mykey will sit to Ludwig's left, between him and King Bowser. The others will follow as is
- understood! -exclaim both Mykey and Ludwig, nodding at the same time. The other boys seem to agree. Jr. seemed to be a bit grumpy but almost no one gave him importance, except for Bowser, who opens his mouth a little to speak to him, but at that moment something happens and he watches.
Bobby: (handing him some jam cookies) Here, Bowsy.
Jr. looks at the gesture in surprise, to which he looks at Bobby
Bobby: (smiling) I hope we get along.
Jr. was somewhat moved and received the cookies smiling too.
Jr.: T-thank you…
Bowser notices that and says to himself -your children will fit in here, my friend-
The coexistence continues and the kids begin to talk with the newcomers. Just then a guard arrives, bowing down and handing him a letter.
Bowser: (reading) let's see...
When he finishes reading he stands up and finishes his breakfast.
Bowser: You'll excuse me, my children, but I have some business to attend to. You keep eating, we'll see you later.
The king leaves and Kamek goes to his office to prepare some things. The other boys stay talking.
Roy: So… what do you like to do, Mykey?
Mykey: mmm… I like to go for a walk, read, to spend time with my brother… simple things
Morton: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT?
Wendy: (covering her ears) jeez! DON’T scream!
Morton: SORRY!
At that Wendy puts a piece of bread in Morton's mouth, which eats it. Larry also covered his ears
Larry: I'm kind of used to it now, but it's always like that. I'm sorry, Mike.
Mykey: don't worry. And well, I like a little of everything, mainly salad, especially spinach.
When he mentions that, everyone there puts on an awkward expression.
Mikey: What's up?
Lemmy: We don't like spinach, not even Wendy or Ludwig, who eat the most vegetables
Mykey: oh, I understand (thinking) that's something that hasn't changed about Lud (looking at him subtly)
Larry: which of the two likes video games?
Bobby: Both of them, only Mykey doesn’t play as much; I do, although I'm not that good
Larry: great! None of my siblings care about that
Jr.: (stopping eating and looking at Larry) hey!
Larry: Last time you said you didn't want to play with me anymore because I beat you.
Jr.: It was just an expression. A long time ago that was
Larry: It was yesterday and you got so mad you threw the joystick out the window.
Iggy: oh! So it was you, Bowsy, who hit me over the head with that!
Jr.: It was accidental, you know?
Larry: Anyway, you didn't seem to want to play again.
Jr.: not even who wanted...
As they argued, Bobby ate in silence, looking down as he was in the middle.
Ludwig: Enough, you idiots! Let them eat in peace, the new boy doesn't have to know about their stupidities
Realizing this, Larry and Jr. look at Bobby, who seemed to be a bit uncomfortable; they look at each other and then apologize and continue eating in silence. Mykey, for his part, notice that they feel a little bad.
Mykey: Excuse me, Ludwig, but they're not idiots. They just act like they're kids, that's all.
At that, Ludwig interprets that as a wake-up call, so he stares at him.
Ludwig: I know my brothers. There are almost always fights at any time. We are so different that this happens often and after a while they are quite normal. I don't like that they act like that for something as silly as that.
Larry stares at Ludwig with a serious face, while Mykey continues the conversation.
Mykey: Yeah, I get that, but that hurts them too. There are better ways to deal with the matter, just a little advice.
Ludwig: Well, I don't need advice anyway, my friend. (Taking a slightly more arrogant tone) You see, there is a system here. we are already used to it. All my brothers are as they are and we do not need changes.
After hearing those words, Mykey decides to end the matter.
Mykey: (serenely) Okay, I'm sorry if that bothered you.
Iggy: Hey, calm down, Ludwig. He only gave you an opinion, it's not a big deal
At that statement Roy and Lemmy agree and nod.
Ludwig: As you saw, Larry and Bowsy are the most childish; Morton is the loudest and most impertinent; Wendy is the surliest, Iggy is the weird one and Roy and Lemmy are clowns.
Everyone there looked at Ludwig with some annoyance.
Larry: and you’re a “kooky” and annoying know-it-all (ending the matter)
Ludwig just looks at Larry with some rejection and picks up his plate of food preparing to leave. Mykey just watches him.
Iggy: You'll have to excuse him, Mykey. He's been acting like this for a long time, but before he didn't... I don't know what's wrong with him.
Mykey: Okay, let's give him some space. I shouldn't have said that anyway
Morton: DON'T WORRY!
Annoyed, Larry and Wendy pull out a piece of duct tape and each place it on Morton's mouth. Mykey and Bobby watch this scene in surprise and look at the rest of the Koopa, to which they shrug.
After breakfast, Bobby and Mykey retire to see the rest of the castle. In that they hear a voice saying -wait!- and they turn to see. It was Larry.
Larry: Hey Bobby. I wanted to apologize for what happened recently. He didn't mean to make a fuss. (Tipping his head forward) I'm sorry. I also wanted to thank you, Mykey, for your words of encouragement.
Bobby: It's okay. No problem
Mykey: Yeah, it's all right, buddy.
Larry: (putting his index fingers together) and… would you still like to play with me?
Bobby looks at his brother waiting for an answer.
Mykey: go. Play with him
Bobby: thanks big bro! (hugs him)
Both boys go to Larry's room. The purple-haired young man turns to follow his path. Meanwhile, from the shadows he is watched by Ludwig, with a certain look of displeasure.
