A big reason as to why I sorta prioritized Twitter over Tumblr is because reach and engagement on Tumblr is not too good nowadays, at least not in the way it used to be back in the day. People engage with posts differently, instead of retweeting people instead rely on likes because that is how many other social medias work.
On twitter a like still gets you more reach and engagements as it shows up on people's timelines, but on Tumblr it does not. For example, in my personal experience about 3/4 of the engagement I get on tumblr is likes. And those are nice but they don't help you connect to new potential audience members like a retweet does, because likes do not boost the post, put it on people's timelines or anything like that. The poster will see your like, so will anyone checking the notes, that's about it. Sometimes the poster won't even see it. Personally, I even turned off my notifications for likes and reblogs without tags (they clog up my notifications otherwise). To explain it in simpler terms, likes on tumblr can be seen as a form of "fluff" support, it will get the artist notes on their post, but no further reach or engagement. Tumblr functions differently from Instagram or Twitter, only reblogs will support the artists you look up to in a substantial way and that is important to remember.
Due to this cultural change on tumblr I simply put more energy into the platform where engagements, reach and growth was much better. I mainly used Tumblr as an art archive and a place where I could post long form stuff, but twitter was still my main platform. But now Twitter is literally exploding from within and it really sucks.
I know many artists also had twitter as their main platform for these reasons, the "modern" tumblr is very discouraging based on how users here now engage with posts and it has driven artists away from twitter. But now twitter is likely gonna collapse soon. So many artists will lose most of their audience, reach, and many will lose their main source of income. Many are returning/making new accounts on tumblr instead, so please, remember to support artists/other creators that you look up to by reblog their stuff. This will give their posts more reach, they will get more engagements and thus they will be able to grow their audience (also, more encouraging comments which always is a motivating factor for any artist). And remember, for many artists their livelihoods will even depend on it.
*edited since I accidentally wrote retweet instead of reblog in some places lmao
