James Rhodes - Is that not worth exploring?
Hi! I’m into movies and people’s thought process while making movies and I’m really passionate about it but I’ve never made a movie myself, I’ve made some bad YouTube videos (making a trailer for my YouTube was the whole reason I got into film). I just wanted to ask, where do I start? What’s the best thing to start with when you’re a beginner? Thanks and have a nice day ❤️
Hi Anon!
If you’ve made videos (good or bad), you’ve already started! So congrats!
If making Youtube videos is what you like to do, I encourage you to continue doing so. If you like to write, I encourage you to write your own short films that you can produce later. (Feel free to write features or TV episodes, but those may be a bit much to tackle at first.) If you want more experience with cameras or sound, volunteer or work freelance making wedding videos, music videos, or anything else you can for friends, family, and/or coworkers. It’s great experience and if you’re lucky, you can make a little extra cash doing it.
Whatever you start out doing, it should be something you are interested in and it should be something that you can keep learning (even if you’re on your own). Find new ways to challenge yourself with each project. Take pictures in black and white, write a short in a different genre, use a green screen, try animation, experiment with sound mixing… whatever you can do to step out of your comfort zone. Being new to the industry means there’s a lot of directions to explore.

“I will die with you when we are old and withered and gray, and I’ll live with you every day until then. This is what I’ll always choose.”
I nod, my shoulders relaxing, even if he can’t see it. “You’ll die with me then,” I breathe. It’s a Shakespearean tragedy at its finest, and I can almost feel his lips rise, just by a fraction, in thought of this.
“Yes, darling. I will die with you.” And he kisses me, powerfully and forcefully. He draws back to whisper, “But not today.”
