On "Radio 1 Road Trip" in 2009, Julian told the story of being rescued from the ocean in Australia.
Julian: "I got rescued by a lifeguard.”
Noel: “A really handsome man.”
Julian: “Quite embarrassing. I was doing that thing where I was so British that I didn’t want to go “Excuse me, I might be drowning.” I was thinking “Should I start waving? Oh god, I can’t, it’s embarrassing….I might die. Okay.” Then I sort of waved and was trying to get back in, it was a riptide. And this huge bloke just sort of swam out in about 3 seconds. He used the riptide to get out to me.”
Noel: “He harnessed the riptide. He strapped himself to the riptide. You were fighting against it, he was going with it.”
Julian: “I was rescued and I fell in love. And I’m married to that man now.”
