Chreon headcanon that Chris proposed to Leon before his mission to look into the Raccoon City Syndrome cases.
Leon, knowing that he's sick and could possibly die, couldn't give him an answer - not wanting to say yes and leave Chris a widower after all the people he's already lost, but Chris insisted he keep the ring with him and give him his answer when he was ready.
After being cured by Elpis at the end of Requiem and knowing he now has the possibility of the future he wants with Chris, he puts on the ring before going to meet up with him as an acceptance of Chris's proposal.
The first thing Chris sees when Leon gets off that helicopter is Leon wearing his ring.

Leon is so sweet to Grace it's not very surprising at this point given his overall personality but still It makes me extremely emotional. I know his maternal instincts kicked in the moment he met Grace, and constantly even more or so when she accidentally calls him "Mom." LMAO
Okay, on a serious note though, he's ready to die if it means Grace could survive. That's his new adopted daughter FR!!! As cliché as it might sound, I love that the "Found Family" trope played a major role in the game—with Leon and Sherry, Alyssa and Grace, Leon and Grace, Grace and Emily, except for Spencer and Grace. I don't buy his called redemption arc or whatsoever, it just came out of nowhere if you ask me. I love that Grace & Emily and Leon & Sherry still keep in touch after the events. It's really cute to think about.
And the Chreon endgame moments in this game? Chris specially sending all the "wolves" to Leon's rescue with a personal message as soon as he heard from Sherry? Leon receives the first lady treatment because he's married to the Alpha of HWS. Basically, their mission in the game is "Saving Leon S. Kennedy and the missing FBI agent is the first priority, dealing with the Umbrella. BSAA and the aftermath are the second." Chris is officially Leon's emergency contact at this point. It legally comes with a marriage certificate after all.
Leon wishes Chris had been there with him, so things "would have been a lot smoother" and smiles at the thought of "running into" Chris again. It is really a nice touch to their whole relationship. He misses his long-distance husband so much alright!
Gosh, I'm dying to know what Chris's message to Leon is all about? I hope we'll find out in a DLC or maybe a new CGI movie!!!

Yesssss his relationship with Grace (and Emily!) is absolutely adorable. I love the small little moments they share like Grace accidentally calling him mom (and Leon's mom instincts kicked in immediately, the way he literally went to the site of his worst traumas to get her back after only having known her for a few hours?? that's a mom right there) and the way Leon tells Grace he trusts her after she started to doubt herself.
But also loved the Chreon crumbs too of course. Given that the mission was kinda off the record and Chris and the HWS might be wanted internationally (depending on how big that divorce with the BSAA was since Capcom hasn't done anything with that yet), and Sherry was explicitly told to drop the mission, Sherry calling Chris and Chris sending the entire HWS into RC to save Leon and Grace is wild. And Leon seemed to excited to see Chris too with his cutesy little "I'm sure I'll run into him," like yeah I'm sure you will lmfao.
In terms of what Chris' message was, I thinking maybe Chris was tipped off about something going down in RC because of the BSAA North American branch soldiers and Chris would've probably found out about that somehow. Given that Leon was aware of the BSAA details neither Sherry nor the gov knew, I think Chris & Leon are probably in kahoots more behind the scenes than has ever been shown before. And I'm really really hoping this gets addressed in the DLC because a. it seems obvious that the message is setting up for something, and I hope we don't have to wait until RE10 to figure that out and b. there were comments and things hinted at in the interview that never game to fruition in the game, so surely that has to come up somewhere. I remember the director talking about exploring what Leon was up to during 7 & 8 since, as it is right now, there's an 11 year gap for Leon in the timeline-- we have him in 2015 in DI and then it jumps to 2026 with Requiem so that's a pretty substantial gap. And there was nothing in Requiem that hinted at what Leon was up to in that era so I'm a bit suspicious of that, and I'm wondering if maybe that'll be included in the DLC somewhere. I think we do have the chance of getting more than 1 DLC given how huge of a game Requiem has become; it'd be one hell of a missed opportunity otherwise. I'm thinking we might get Mercs, something with Alyssa, and then maybe something with Chris & Leon that futher explores the BSAA & HWS side of things because they were planting a lot of seeds for that here and if they don't do anything with that it's gonna piss me off.
Of all the things I expected in RE9, Chreon crumbs was honestly not one of them but this is gonna fuel me for the next decade. On a serious note though, I think this speaks volumes about the level of trust they have in each other and just how impactful Chris finding Leon in Colorado was to Leon's emotional well-being. Him going from isolated, withdrawn, and wanting to be left alone to lick his wounds to willingly asking for help and eager to connect with Chris is absolutely beautiful, and I love the details so much. Leon's "I'll stop you as many times as I have to," being a direct callback to their conversation at the end of VD where Chris tells him they'll keep doing this as long as they have to is adorable. I also love that even though Chris wasn't the one to pull Leon out of the building (likely purely due to Capcom inner-working bullshit reasons it seems), he's clearly very concerned and on the comms with Umber Eyes specifically asking if Leon's ok. We never do find out what Chris' "secret message" for Leon is though... much to think about.
AND THE END SCENE??? Leon smiling while talking about he's sure he's going to see Chris and talking to Sherry about him is fucking adorable, and this also means Sherry & Chris seem to know each other post RE6 too.
