Hey um I've been getting really shitty anons saying I can't be an nb lesbian because "if you're nonbinary you have to be attracted to feminine nonbinary people not women" and they've just been making me feel horrible. Is it true?

they’re wrong. sexuality is more complicated than people want to give it credit for, and when they don’t get it, they blame it on things they don’t understand–exhibit a being nonbinary genders.

those anons have no real authority to call you a fake because gender makes being gay a complicated thing. I mean, take a look at the concept of diamory–the way it’s presented alongside sapphism and achilleanism assumes that the two binary genders are the default, while nonbinary genders are ‘really all the same’. are you honestly telling me an agender person is pretty much the same as a m/f genderfluid person? hell no! so why are all nonbinary genders grouped into the ‘other’ category? 

point being, lesbianism isn’t about being attracted to one gender, it’s about being attracted to only feminine genders. 

I posed a question a while back about whether a fem attracted to both binary women and woman-aligned nonbinary people should identify as bi or lesbian. the answers I got were surprisingly split even, the most common response being ‘let each individual decide which label fits them best.’ 

I’ll break this down for people who don’t understand it very well, or aren’t familiar with the concept of nonbinary attraction: a woman attracted to women can be a lesbian. a woman attracted to fems can be a lesbian. fem attracted to binary women can be a lesbian. a fem attracted to other fems can be a lesbian. a women or a fem can be attracted to both, and still be a lesbian, because what all these genders have in common is they have an inherently feminine aspect. 

it’s not so much about being attracted to your exact gender as genders that share similar qualities and don’t exist entirely independent from your own. 

so yes, those shitty anons are wrong, and if they have a problem, they can come fight me.

I think ‘lesbianism isn’t about attraction to one gender, it’s about attraction to feminine genders’ pretty much sums up why I see monosexual as a bad label. it’s just inaccurate and reduces binary-aligned people to a binary they’re not a part of.
