Tangent Explained! Gif source.

Have you ever wondered what the tangent function actually has to do with the tangent of a circle? I’ve seen this gif floating around the web a couple of times, but I’ve never actually understood it until today. So, think of this image:

Now, imagine a line tangent to the right side of the circle (just like the animation above). Now extend r (the hypotenuse of the triangle) until it intersects with this tangent line. The height of this intersection point (assuming that the horizontal line crossing the center of the circle is height 0) is the tangent of theta. That’s one way to think of tan(x), and that’s what the gif is illustrating! Pretty neat!
