Finding out two years ago that my mom had skin cancer, melanoma to be precise, I was distraught to say the least. Instead of accepting this, I lashed out emotionally before accepting the fact that my mom was going to have to fght this no matter my reaction. I could accept this and support her fight or react badly and make things harder for us all. Rather than allowing it to drag her down, she fought back and proved to us all just how strong she is.
As someone that always wears beanies in the winter and caps or a helmet in the summer, we were surprised to find that she had a cancerous mole on her scalp. Always making sure she was suncreamed up, covered from the sun and spent a lot of time in the shade growing up, this shocked us even more. She’s never even used a sunbed.
Whilst she is a ‘fan’ of pages on facebook and checks Melanoma charity websites, mom had no idea there was a UK charity and found she was more aware of US and Australian pages.
I decided to do my trek in her honour as she never fails to impress me with her bravity and strength. I feel the UK charity deserves more recognition for their hardwork surrounding such a harrowing topic.
