CRITICAL FIRE IN CHICAGO

In the 2nd of December 1958, there were serious number of deaths in the parochial grade school. There were no rescuers within the first few minutes, only one fire exit. The fire was impassable that 87 out of 1700 students had died. Based on the news articles, the school does not have emergency plans. One fire exit is not going to save 1700 people's lives, if the school was responsible enough about the safety of students they would spend anything for it. It's insane how no one was ready for worst-case scenarios. When the fire came, all they did was hide under their desks and stay down the floor. It was possible that all of them could have died; it is better to pay any expense than waiting for something bad to happen.

I have a feeling that the school did not set any drills due to the fact that their school is parochial therefore, they have faith in things that aren't proven to be true. For example: It would not be possible for their school to set on fire, since all of the danger they might possibly have could be answered through their prayers. But there is no evidence showing all prayers could be answered. Therefore when in doubt, always go with something that would put you safe in any incident that could possibly happen. Because of having too much faith, all of the students were 18 minutes between life and death. For having hundreds of people in one building, 18 minutes is an extremely short amount of time to find a way getting out.

When the firemen came, it was too late to save some of the students. There were only 1200 seconds left till death could have been cheated. The firemen came and saw the entire second floor of the building wrecked.

Has globalisation done more harm or good for the promotion of human rights?

I believe that globalisation has done more good to promoting human rights. Globalisation is to build one idea, one world, and one market. It also means to extend the cooperation against national organisations, the process of interaction and improvement. The only different among the rest is, that it gives people jobs even though they don't want the job. Globalisation is what keeps the world going, even though there are different effects to some countries.

Globalisation has ruined Africa but right now, Africa is developing because of globalising. This shows how globalising isn't always the same; sometimes it could change. Sometimes not. It could turn out successful, or being a failure. It mean that people shouldn't depend globalisation on promoting human rights because the answer would always be uncertain.

Most of the positive influences are trade and growth extension of the products that are being sold. It makes sense in a way that if these products are being globalised, it also means that it's advertised. Therefore, there is a huge possibility of increasing trade, growth, and even economic rating. Advertising is also one way for globalisation to promote human rights (exposition worldwide). Another example is if other country's possession is combined or joint with the other, it wouldn't be the government responsibility. Therefore, human rights could be promoted.

Ways that globalisation could further increase human rights is democracy. According to the United States, the reason why they do not have a problem in globalising unlike other countries like Indonesia, is because they're democratic. Stating that the reason why they have human rights violation makes other countries think that they are not responsible enough as a whole population to have the right to express each proposal.

Scramble for Africa

In our Humanities class, we discussed about an article that we read “Scramble for Africa” The main points that got me interested were, how people view civilization in different ways; positive and negative, how civilization affected people, and how the common general meaning of it impacted our present understanding about the past.

When talking about civilization, people would mostly think it would be positive because it means to develop and bring advancement to something. However, it could also mean taking something or someone down because it is often necessary to do so, in order to civilize a society. In the article “Scramble for Africa” they agreed that civilization is a negative interpretation by people. It was stated that the Europeans believed civilization could “savage other people by introducing Christianity, trade, education, justice, private properties, and forced labor” Assuming that there could be reasons for each behind these, there must be a whole lot and it shows that civilization means a lot of different things.

This connects to how Africans slaves had to get freed from Arab traders for civilization after slavery ended in Europe. This shows how Europe had so much power against Africans, and that knowing that there were 11 million African slaves taken from the ship back to Africa, they have been everywhere treating Europeans as their master. It is unfair that Europeans would think that Africans could just be paid and ordered like animals. The truth is, that no one deserves to be treated like so. But Africans themselves allow it to happen for their own benefit. Slavery is what keeps them living. As well as some Europeans that rely to slavery a lot, they wouldn’t be able to do things themselves without slaves. And so, slavery is beneficial to both.

How does the historical significance of civilization impact us, as humans? In my opinion, it is the elementary school principle that we learned as children, to not let something happen again we must learn from our mistakes. Honestly, civilization is already trying to teach us how to develop in many different positive ways. However, we always push those ideas away from us because we are afraid that something negative would happen to us. Therefore, everyone just think about what could be beneficial to them and often doesn’t think about others.

I love how you made me realize that there are so many things that cause this world to be cold, and how you chose one to talk about instead of trying to talk about them all which would have been confusing and maybe not as accurate. I strongly agree with the fact that in a lot of countries women are still not viewed as equal to men, and that does create a lot of tension in this world. Do you think that this is a problem world wide or just in some countries? And do you think it’s because of certain cultures and/or religions or is it just simply because men feel that they deserve a higher status in society?

Thank you! I'm glad you agree to my opinions. Great question, I personally don't think it is a problem all over the world. Only to some countries, but I can't say "most" because I didn't do the research. When speaking about gender equality, i'd say religion is the main cause of all these conflicts. As you have said in your own blog, we act how we are being raised. That also connects to how the rules in different religions make men and women unbalanced.

I really like your idea of designing your knowledge about peace into a poem. I like how it doesn't rhyme as well, it gives realistic images to my mind. Indeed, peace could really mean and lead in many different ways. Also, I would like to add that scientists don't only make things easier for us human beings. But they also give us bad influences by relying to them all the time. It is after all our own duty to cope up with our own nature. Sometimes, making things easier makes us a failure. But we still want it, because we are tempted to just go straight to the answer without even finding out how it was made. Imagining peace is a doddle, and it could happen! But we should take note that peace relies on us. Therefore, there should be no one to blame.

I agree that people have different views and ways to look at the Cold War. I also agree with point that men are a little superior than women. But some people and governments are trying to set equality between them and do you think that only setting equality between men and women can lead to a cold less world. Even in some countries where there is equality between the two genders, there are still a lot of hate and protest due to other several reasons.

I appreciate that you agree to this, as a guy. My idea isn’t actually based on research. I’ve been so curious how gender relates to inequality. It interests me how no one in the class actually think that gender equality plays a huge role in conflicts. Which in fact doesn’t, but it adds to all the tensions.

I would say that, especially in European countries, the gap between men and women is either VERY small or even gone. There are lots of female positions in leading roles. Women are involved in politics, in factories, in everyday job and much more. Have you ever thought about the fact that some women want to be HIGHER than men? They want more respect than men, maybe because they have been below men for such a long time that they finally want to be above them. Not in line with them but above. That would explain why so many women participate in that dance, because they want people to feel pity for them.

Great point! Also, someone mentioned to me that he saw a painting situated in Japan. Japanese women work not to be penalised, while Japanese men just sit in front of them and wait for something good to happen. I thought this supports my point because it shows great illustration, and oppression. In some ways, I noticed this morning that I disagree more than I agree to my blog. It is not the men's fault that women are being raped, incest, or abused. Women themselves, tempt men to come up to them by the ways of vamping, dressing unprofessionally, etc. Women make such a big deal out of it, which leads to more conflict. Your last statement really caught me.

The summary of what I’m talking about is how there is no answer to the question “Can we live in a cold-less world?” because we are surrounded by so much people that answering that question is impossible. However, we could create a more peaceful environment by starting to work on ourselves before judging others and getting into conflicts. The two worst factors in creating tension are inforcing your opinions, religion or political views on others while not accepting their own and judging others based on their way of thinking. We also need to realise that we, as humans, are so different from each other, every person is unique and it’s not possible for us to all agree or think the same way. It’s fun to sometimes debate about certain topics with your friends or family and learn new information while still having a strong opinion about the topic and sharing it with others, it could create tension but as long as it doesn’t result in a conflict or anger it’s a good kind of tension. If we teach the next generations of acceptance and peace we will start to see a bigger change, because the way we are raised has a great impact on the opinions we form later, as adults. So instead of passing on hate towards a certain person or culture on to our children, we should teach them to accept everyone, no matter where they come from or how different they are. As long as we accept that each person is different we are on the right part to a tension-less world.

I genuinely agree to your idea of connecting certain events such as peace, to your own experiences. Your video has inspired me so much on how to accept people for who they are, and no matter how they treated you before. They will be sorry and regretful. I admire your understanding about respecting people's opinions too. Definitely, the way people act and become depends on how the are raised. Therefore, they don't deserve to be penalised or mistreated. It is hard to mention all of the points I agree with yours because I approve to most of it. Accepting is the key to give the world less opposition.

2013 was a great year for both my studies and excitement. I learned new things and made new friends. I also learnt a lot of knowledge from my elders. But the most important progress I did was for my studies where I have been paying more attention to gain more knowledge. This is where I...

It’s good to hear you are developing your knowledge skills! It is indeed the same for me. I get to learn and understand the subject matter better when there is no help from parents or tutors involved. In that way, you don’t depend your work to someone else but you. I perfectly agree with challenging YOURSELF to do better, because challenging others is not the way to earn more knowledge; but competition. We basically have a lot of goals in common. I also wished to be a fighter at the end of the year because things that I spend time working on shouldn’t be wasted. It should be cherished forever.

2013 was a year of tough fatalities within family and friends with many deaths. It was also a year of realization what the word happy means. Once you experience a time of low self-esteem and low expectations towards life you will find that happiness can only be achieved when you fight for it...

I’m sorry for your losses. Indeed, there could never be true happiness if not for the good things you’ve done to earn it. Going to different schools with different languages sounds tough since you need to adjust and arrange yourself to the standard. But since German is your native language, I guarantee you can do better. I agree with not planning too much ahead of time because the right things will happen in the right time and in the right place. Everything will happen if it is meant to be, in any ways. I recommend you focus on things that you should be focusing because it will bring you everything you hope for, in the future. Good luck to reaching your goals this year!

A new beginning

Out of all the hard work and obstacles I overcame, 2013 gave me the inspiration to take time doing things. In that way there would be more ideas that could broaden up, creating an extraordinarily good point. I realized that challenging others, without challenging yourself will not make you a better person because there is no one but yourself who could help you overcome something that challenges you. It taught me to trust myself more and not to give up easily. I was the type of person that would continue a task that wasn't even satisfied by me. I didn't give much interest to the subjects that I knew would help me in the future. 2013 was a year of regrets, but also made me accomplish a lot of satisfactories and personal improvements. I surprised myself when I passed subjects that I wasn't expecting at all; Chemistry and Drama. One word to describe me in 2013 is that I was UNFOCUSED. And I guarantee that I will be able to change that this year because I waited so long for a new beginning. The quote that caught my attention from song lyrics and movies at the end of 2013 was "Out of the old, in with the new" because you could never move on with all the past in your mind. 2014 is a year where i'm going to be less distracted by anything unnecessary so I could spend more time on my studies. Especially that I am an easily distracted person, I need to cut out my time on socializing. It's not that I have to do it in order to pass the subjects I need more attention. It's because i WANT this for myself. What I'd have to do is to only choose one extra curricular activity to keep me active, and that will be dance. One of my new years resolution this year is, to get back to dancing ballet because I regret for almost three years that I quit my dream since I was 7. If I hadn't quit, I would have been on a higher level already. At the end of 2014, I want to use this word to describe my year: FIGHTER. This is the resource that I want to share with everyone. So What?

Based on Digital Nations, one of the aspects I agree with is democracy. Not a lot of governments these days are involved and proactive on what happens to our society. Although people are aware of this, the government still shows liberty. Especially to children who use technology in such an early age, they will get brainwashed easily by the false information in the Internet.

According to the Digital Nation documentary we studied in class, South Korea is one of the most standing countries that were very focused in technology. According to their schools, an average second grader is required to operate a computer as part of their subject. This is a good example of showing how people start to get involved in technology and not getting themselves out of it. Their approach made it very clear that the government doesn't have any rules and regulations on Internet usage. As long as they get their financials higher, they don’t care about people who will get affected.

One of the events that Digital Nation found out is, that teenagers use mobile phones everywhere. If not playing games on their mobile phones, they stay overnight on Internet shops just to get access to games, at the same time hanging with their friends. During Internet camp, most students found a difficult time dealing without their technologies. This is one of the most difficult things to cope with, which is why there should be limitations when it comes to using the Internet.

I thought the most interesting event of Digital Nation was, knowing how the brain reacts to Google versus reading a paper book. Apparently, our brain reacts to Google more due to other people’s opinions for us to be convinced. Whereas, the book doesn’t have movement and people have to create their own image in their head. Unlike Google, everything people want to read is up there. That includes, movies, documentaries, and other stories.

Upon viewing all these evidences, I say that the government should get more proactive and get involved into society. One immoral situation is that the government allows people to smoke because they want to get their financials higher. One the other side, they know what negative effects it will bring to people and that it would cost a lot of money. The same goes with fast food and other negotiators. They don’t think about the citizens’ health care and how they would suffer from diseases just because of the chemicals or cheap products they put into food and drugs. These things will affect the lives of children as well. When they see people do things, they follow without thinking the negative effects.

These situations address to technology because people get easily persuaded that technology is an extreme weapon to use in order to strive or relieve stress. They see persuasive things, and so they believe it.

Reflection on tracking an issue

Tokyo, Japan has decided to elongate the size of the ice wall that they are building for the radioactive leaks; from one mile to two miles of frozen underground wall. Its height should be about 100 feet deep to secure that the leaks won’t pass through, as well as the water treatment. The government is doing their best to get all the responsibility while the politicians are making the decision. The Tokyo Electric Power is given the responsibility to removing all the fuel rods and contaminated water. The expert, Atsunao Marui said that they still need other backup plans incase the ice walls fail. Japan had to pay 20 miles of land around the nuclear power plant because it lead 160, 000 people in danger.

News was brought on September 19, 2013 that the prime minister shut down all the reactors in order for workers to concentrate more on the issue. Only 2 reactors survived from the 2011 earthquake and 3 reactors were melted down because of the tsunami. The decisions regarding the two reactors will be made by 2014 since it is not what they should be concentrating for now. The leaking does not only affect humans and animals but all the living things including plants.

Most of the water is being pulled out and part of it is being treated. The chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority that the new treatment machine that removes all the radioactive water could be thrown away in the ocean to also prevent contaminated water and keep it clean. The government is continuing to fund the development of having a more advanced water treatment for the leaks.

What I have learned about this research is to be aware of your safety first before others. For example 2 weeks ago, there has been news about the toxic leaks that could poison humans in split hours. As well as the previous news, they haven’t been discussing about plants; how it would affect the animals. It’s because the person that is delivering the news is human and so he/she doesn’t think of anything else besides his/her own race at this point. Parts of my prediction were true, my prediction was for them to be able to do something about the leak within a week and they have. They have been treating the water and doing some things that might cover the leaks temporarily. The best bias for this issue is “sources” because in every bit of their news article, they always interview experts or other high positioned officers in the Nuclear Regulation Authority and other companies, I also think this is what they mostly use. While I was tracking this issue, I was surprised by the amount of water they pull out from the underground everyday; which is 400 tonnes. As I was aware of this information, I got more interested because I was expecting more amount of water for the next few weeks. My predictions were indeed precise.

Tracking Japan's nuclear plant's issue

I have been continuing to track the issue about Japan’s nuclear power plant. I am on my 2nd track and this week’s news has been terrible. The radioactive leaks was affirmed that currently, the leaks has gone worse and that they need the ice walls to block the radioactive water from leaking as soon as possible. The damage of the plant causes the underground water to flood so, they had to get 400 tonnes of water from it everyday to keep it safer. They say “It is the greatest threat humanity every faced” David Webb who is the Chief Executive Director was interviewed by “the Voice of Russia” about his opinion on the prevention of the leaks. The voice of Russia asked David Webb if such governmental procedures would tack the issue. David stated that the leakage of the radioactive is terrible enough but what’s worse is the cooling pool of unit 4. It removed the entire hot core of reactor 4 and was replaced by the cool pool before the tsunami occurred. Currently, the pool contains of 400 kg of hot plutonium. High temperatures of nuclear energy will occur if the hot plutonium will evaporate. If an unprotected person will be standing near the contaminated area, the person will die of radiation dose.

The second article “the guardian” announced that the ice wall would be built 1 mile long to prevent the contaminated water into mixing with the cool water. The officials are expecting the ice walls to be done by March 2015 since the technology they will be using isn’t new. It is unprecedented. Because of the worse leakage, they would have to inject the water 300 million pounds worth of water treatment. The government also wants to speed up the development of the water treatment system to be able to remove the radioactive water. Also, it is mentioned that Japan will be hosting the 2020 Olympic and the ice walls will work perfectly.

The most convincing and interesting source is The Voice of Russia because it has more information and actual proof that they are unbiased. In my opinion, it is a source because throughout their article they have been interviewing the Chief Executive Director about the issue. The bias I choose for the second article is omission because they discussed more about the dates and the measurements. At this point, the viewers would be more interested on hearing about what is actually happening with the nuclear reactors. The common bias that both article have is liberalism because both talk about new ideas. Nothing was ever repeated from the first article.

What's the situation Syria?

Obama is desperately trying to get rid of those hazardous chemicals. Decisions are still being made as to whether or not they are in favor of carrying out this plan out. Obama is also contemplating what to do because once he attacks all the other allies will also step in and just make matters worse and this will escalate the problem. It has been said, that Syria holds secretive chemicals weapons within the country in unknown grounds.
