Just a little something I made on my phone. Enjoy
Project 4 Self Critique
I had a lot of difficulty coming up with an idea for this piece. The idea behind it was to do something outside of the norm. At first I tried to dance in the middle of the sidewalk on the middle of campus. I found this to be uneffective becaue people would just walk around or go on a different path. After that failed attempt I decided to do it in front of the class. I challenged people to a dance off as they walked into class and then challenged the whole classroom afterwards. I believe doing this in the morning will greatly the level of reactions that I will get from people. I know some people might be too tired to dance, while others might already had their morning coffee and will be happy to dance. I also think that doing this in the classroom atmosphere will further push the idea of doing something outside of the norm.
Performance piece
For my piece I am planning to stand in the middle of a heavily walked by sidewalk and have music playing. As the music plays I plan on dancing and simply get in people’s way so that they have to acknowledge this action that isn’t seen everyday. I would like for my piece to invite people to get out of their comfort zone and do something outside of their regular routine. People are constantly going from point A to point B without paying much attention to their path to get there. In doing this on a sidewalk where people normally walk to get to different places I think I can influence a higher number of people to pay more attention to the path they take to get from point A to point B. I also plan on dancing in an absolutely childish and care-free manner. I hope this will remind people that sometimes what other people think of us isn’t important.
Concept
What would you do if a stranger asked you to dance? What if a stranger was dancing in your path and wouldn’t let you get by because of it? What would your reaction be?

Get Lost Performance Piece
Rather than drawing a map and planning on getting lost I simply let chance decided where I ended up. I walked straight down the hallway until I reached a corner and then flipped a coin to decided where to go. If it landed on heads then I kept going straight, if it landed on tails then I went down the other hallway. If my only option seemed to be to make a turn then i would decide to either turn that way or make a u-turn and head back. I did this same thing when I reached a staircase or doorway. I flipped the coin 75 times and ended up by the entrance to the library.
Doors Performance Piece
For this exercise i went from classroom to classroom randomly opening and closing doors. For the classrooms with people in them I got multiple reactions from different people. Sometimes the people in the classroom would just ignore me, sometimes the teacher would look at me and ask if they could help me with something. Since I was not supposed to make any noise I simply stared blankly at them and closed the door behind me as I left without saying anything. As I walked away I could hear some people talk or say “what the hell?” This type of interaction, or rather lack of interaction, with the viewers of my actions made it fun in comparison to when I would do the asme actions but no one was in the room or no one pay attention to me opening and closing the door. I did this in both the second and the first floor of the art building. I noticed no major difference in people’s reactions because of which floor I was at.
First I folded my piece of paper in half twice and tried to read as much as possible from it. I was able to only read one quarter of the paper I folded. Luckily the paper I folded was the one given in class with different poems on each corner of the page. Due to this I was able to read one of the poems after it was folded.
After that I unfolded the piece of paper and googled how to make a paper crane. I followed the instructions and finally ended up with a semi-decent looking paper crane. I was not able to read any coherent sentences but was bale to read certain words: MAP PIECE, a map, 1963, another, each door, sounds, top of the building, a goldfish, water, the West to the, Let it, a liter of, sky.
Wood Performance Piece
For the piece of wood I hit, I used a tree branch. It was surprisingly soft to the touch. At first it didn’t make much of a noise when I hit it but i kept hitting it harder until it made a loud “thud” noise. Then I cupped my hands and started hitting the branch as if I was trying to grab it. This really didn’t make much of a noise. I found out that the best way to make noise from hitting the branch was to hit it with my knuckles by knocking. I tried hitting it really hard with my palm but it didn’t make too much noise and just hurt my palm instead.
Goldfish Performance Piece
Walked outside, looked up at the sky, imagined a large goldfish Floating across the sky. It was about the size of a bus. It was swimming freely. Not really going in a straight line, rather it was swimming in circles as it would inside a fish bowl. It was fun to imagine something to big with such huge possibilities to be restrained to the same movements that it would make when within some sort of container. I think the reason why I imagined it going in circles, being lost, was because I’m not very good with directions and I couldn’t tell which side was East and which side was West.
Wall Performance Piece
Touched wall outside of classroom next to vending machine
-Warm (due to vending machine)
-Not humid
Touched wall on outside of building
-Very cold
-Not humid
Touched wall in men’s bathroom (next to the sinks)
-Neither warm nor cool
-Wet (due to water splashed from sink...I hope)
Reading #5 Questions
1: Performance art is usually something visual. Could it be something nonvisual such as taste or smell?
2: Does Christine Sun Kim performance art sorround the act of her creating the visuals to the sounds or does it sorround the visuals to the sounds themselves?
