A step back in time for me. My band regularly used to play with Gabrielle’s Wish in the mid 90’s. Angular, rhythmic, confrontational, hypnotising post punk. Rob is part Ian Curtis part Mark E Smith, walking onstage with his Tesco carrier bag, kicking monitors and throwing mike stands. All held together by the incredible rhythm section of Darren on bass and Bo on drums. So good, there was a fella who had travelled from Hong Kong for the pleasure.
Annabella Lwin's Bow Wow Wow, The Ruby Lounge, Manchester The room is filled with old punks, ready to be taken back in time. A tight, well rehearsed band - the drummer doing an amazing job of those trademark tribal sounds. Annabella is hard to take your eyes off - constantly talking, reminiscing, dancing and removing people's cameras for fun. They play everything you want them to with real energy in a sauna-like atmosphere. Final song - I Want Candy: Annabella passing the microphone to four people at the front to chant the chorus. One being little me.
Curtis Eller’s American Circus, The Ruby Lounge, Manchester Banjo-playing rock and roller influenced by 20’s-40’s country and blues. Curtis sings/story tells about such varied subjects as American politics, pigeon racing and Elvis. He gyrates, balances, leaps, high kicks and prowls through the audience. The audience are fully involved with the whole band, most transfixed with Dana Marks and the flashes of her suspender stockings. This is brilliant high energy entertainment.
Team Taylor (at The Ruby Lounge)
Dub Sex, Blackthorn Festival, Etherow Country Park Dub Sex have a special place in me. They became Dumb, who I stood up drumming my heart out for. Headlining in a tent, in a field near the woods. Marks voice has never sounded better. Cathy is as solid as a rock as per. Faces from the Manchester music past watched on with obvious love. They played everything you wanted them to and it all sounded magnificent. Loud, structured, clever, wonderful.
Weaves, The Castle, Manchester
A sold out, 60 strong crowd in a tiny, hot room. Plus two adorable young boys from Blackburn at the front in Weaves tees who blagged in with the band and knew all the words. Weaves are Canadian, guitar driven rock with big riffs and insane drums. Jasmyn finished the set on the floor in the crowd. Sweat on the band, on the audience and raining in the air from the boys at the front. A really good time gig.
Martha, Soup Kitchen, Manchester Martha are one of those bands that are really popular but no ones heard of them. A packed, sold out Soup Kitchen, full of their hardcore fans - awkward and very geeky, singing all of the lyrics. They rattle through songs from the new record scattered with old. Fast, energetic, pop music sang with NorthEast voices. Some banter about the EU referendum and their kick drum was nicely decorated - changing their song title to 'I Miss EU, I'm lonely'.
