Say what you want about overweight people and whatnot about me, at least I can close my luggage on my own
im dying my hair again weeeeeeeeeeeee
Seeing people I know and like using AI is making me understand the protagonists of those old time sci fi dystopia's.
"Oh I don't normally use AI, I just wanted it to plan my trip"
You lived on this planet for decades, you know what you like, there are hundreds of websites where you can type into any search engine " things to do in [area]" and have at least a hundred different options.
"Oh I only use it so I can figure out what to make during the week with what I have"
The most popular website as you type in "recipes" into google have sections where you click dinner- quick and easy and those usually rely on staples + 1 or 2 items. I found 30 recipes on chicken alone.
"I had a writing idea, so I typed a few sentences into Chat GPT and I was able to write 20 pages with it."
Youdidn'twriteit.Youdidn'twriteit.youdidn'twriteit.youdidn'twriteit.YOUDIDN'TWRITEIT.YOUDIDN'TWRITEIT.YOUDIDN'TWRITEIT.
always being yelled at for working on stuff that relates to my book but isn’t my book by the 2 people who consider themselves “the fandom” (and only one has actually read it)
I saw someone post some writing advice (and I’m sorry I can’t find it now, so if it was you, let me know and I’ll credit) and it really made me stop for a sec - “just write it down, even if it’s bad. You can edit bad writing. You can’t edit a blank page.”
Boom 🤯
Due to some personal issues I haven’t written anything new in about 3 months. And I’m not even talking about posting finished work. I’m talking about writing a single damn original sentence. At best, I’ve been editing and rehashing the same WIP’s that have been living in my drafts for months.
Writing is something I love to do and it’s eating me alive that I can’t do it, for one reason or another. It’s like when someone wants to go swimming but is terrified of the water. The desire is there but you just can’t get yourself there to do it.
But that statement rings something true - just write it, even if it’s bad. You can edit bad writing. You can’t edit a blank page.
Paying it forward to anyone else in this boat. Maybe it will help you.
And to the person who posted that, thank you 🙏
At the hospital (in Ireland (context is important)) and the desk lady literally says “are you Roman catholic?” And when I said no she was like “are you any other religion?” And I said no.
Basically I’m not gonna be shocked if I get my paper work back and it says “religion: heathen”
One thing I’ll miss about Ireland (besides my friends, the public transport system, the walkable city, being near the beach, and all the little cafes) is the experience of the ham and cheese toastie in all the cafes and coffee shops. Ive always been a sucker for a grilled ham and cheese, but in the states I’ve only been able to get a normal grilled cheese at the average cafe. And god they always do them up here with like a pesto, or a béchamel sauce, or a nice mustard and like fancy bread and flakey sea salt.
And while many of my frustrations is that most (not all) of the food here is mid and the only Mac n cheese I’ve had that tastes any good is stuff I handmade myself, I will say that the ham and cheese toastie will be sorely missed. Just walking into any place that sells coffee and getting my main comfort food is like god tier.
if I see one more "why age verification is bad" post that doesn't even bother to mention that locking young people out of huge sections of the public sphere - literally the stated goal and primary impact of this shit - is wrong in and of itself I will simply start hitting people with bricks
I’ve really come to appreciate weird books. Not particularly horror, or thriller, but like modern queer gothic or sci-fi action fantasy with necromancers or post apocalyptic Americana, just weird-ish stories. Stuff I wouldn’t have read in high school cause I was wimp.
It’s nice because I can’t read it all in one go. I have to take breaks, cause I start to feel like I’m vibrating at a frequency only dogs can hear when they get a little more intense. I think slowing my reading down is helping me appreciate the story more, letting me mull it over and think about it.
I don’t know why but contemporary stuff just doesn’t do that for me, there’s a lot of books I can just read in one shot, and while i enjoy them, sometimes they’re nothing burgers in terms of thinking about them afterwards.
It’s nice, like savoring a sweet coffee with a friend.
stretching feels so so so so good I just did it and it was so good. I might indulge myself with another stretch and quite soon
Tips for Writing Small Towns!! PART TWO
⋆˙⟡ The economy of small towns is not quaint. It is precarious and everyone knows exactly how precarious. When the plant closed, or the mill shut down, or the highway got rerouted fifteen miles east, the whole town felt it in a specific and lasting way. There are towns that have been dying for forty years and the people in them know it and don't talk about it directly but it's in everything. The storefronts with plywood where glass used to be, the school that consolidated with the next town over, the young people who leave and the question of whether they're coming back that nobody asks out loud because everybody already knows the answer. Writing a small town without writing its economic reality is writing a set, not a place.
⋆˙⟡ There is a specific kind of person who runs everything and they are not elected. Every small town has someone. Sometimes a family, sometimes just an individual, who is not officially in charge of anything but whose opinion determines outcomes. The woman who's been on every committee for thirty years. The family that's owned the land since before living memory. They don't have to make demands. Everyone already knows where the edges are. A newcomer or outsider won't see this power structure at first because it isn't written down anywhere. It lives in who gets called first, who's consulted before decisions are made, whose silence means disapproval. Writing this type of character correctly means never letting them explain themselves. They don't need to.
⋆˙⟡ Leaving is a complicated moral act and coming back is even more complicated. The person who got out, who went to college, who moved to the city, who built a life somewhere else, occupies a strange position. There's pride in them, genuine pride, and also a kind of low resentment that nobody names. They think they're better than this. Maybe they do, maybe they don't, but the suspicion is there. And when they come back, for a funeral, because things fell apart, because they got sick, the town doesn't quite absorb them back in the way they expect. They're not who they were. But they're also not from away. They're in a third category that doesn't have a comfortable name and everyone, including them, is a little awkward about it.
⋆˙⟡ People maintain relationships for decades past the point where they would have ended anywhere else. Because the pool is small and leaving is a whole thing, people stay in friendships, in dynamics, in proximity to people they would have simply stopped seeing in a city. The woman who is still friends with her ex-husband's sister because their kids go to the same school and their mothers are in the same Bible study and it would be more work to be enemies than to just keep showing up. These relationships have layers and scar tissue. They are not warm exactly, but they are not cold either. They are maintained. Writers often write relationships as chosen. In small towns, a lot of relationships are simply continued.
⋆˙⟡ Local history is oral and it is everywhere and it is not neutral. The story of what happened to the Henderson property, why the Murphys and the Dales don't speak, what exactly went on the summer of the flood; this history lives in people, not in records. And it gets told selectively, with emphasis and with meaning. The version your family tells is not the version their family tells. History in a small town is a living argument. A character who grew up there absorbed a version of local history that shaped their understanding of who deserves what and why, and that version has gaps and biases they cannot fully see. A newcomer doesn't have access to this history at all and will keep misreading things because of it.
⋆˙⟡ The relationship between small towns and their nearest city is specific and loaded. It's not simply rural versus urban. It's a relationship of dependency and resentment. People drive to the city for the hospital, for the court, for the things the town can't support anymore. And they come back with the feeling that the city doesn't know they exist, doesn't factor them in, makes decisions that affect them without consulting them. This is not paranoia. It's largely accurate. A small town character's relationship to the nearest city (whether they go often or rarely, what they feel when they're there, what they feel when they come back) says a lot about who theey are and where they stand in their own community.
Isn’t bread that uses yeast technically not vegan? Cause yeast is technically a living organism.
Ranking the planets based on how good they’d taste to eat
Earth: 10/10
This would be the best one. First you got the crunchy outer layer filled with a bunch of life so a variety of tastes as well, moving into the gooey centre YUUMMMMY. You have to consider water on it as well so you’re also getting hydrated it’s the best. It’s basically a molten cake and if I could only choose one planet to eat it would be Earth
Mercury: 4/10
This has the potential to be good as well, its core is really big and crust is thin. Now while you might go but John Earth got such a high score because of that no? WRONG mercury is too small wouldn’t be filling enough and there’s too much core you don’t want it to overwhelm the crust
Venus: 7/10
The hottest planet in the solar system gets its points because sometimes you want a spicy food and I think this would work
Mars: 5/10
I am fond of Mars but I think it would be too dry to eat. Maybe if you have it after you’ve drunk something then it could work and I could see it being a fun little snack
Jupiter: 6/10
Okay this is a gas giant so it would be difficult to eat and I think the red spot would be a nice place to bite into however it could be too big and you might not be able to finish in one sitting. Now this could be a downside or a positive, either urgh I have to eat the rest of this later, and if you like it there’s not much of it left, or yay I have more food for later. It wouldn’t be my first choice to eat I think it’s too large
Saturn: 9/10
Now this is tricky because do you count saturns rings and yes I will. This makes Saturn so much more fun to eat because you have the planet itself to eat as your main course and the ring as a snack you can munch on when you get bored of the planet itself. This would probably be my second choice of planet to eat it makes eating fun. Saturn without its rings would probably be a 2/10 because other planets have its gimmick
Neptune: 7/10
Okay you might be thinking John! What? But Neptune is a gas ice giant so it provides a nice cool refreshing meal after some of the others you might have eaten. I’d pair this with Venus
Pluto: 10/10
ITS STILL A PLANET I DONT CARE WHAT YOU SAY
Uranus: 10/10
Uranus tastes good
first few months of alectopause: damn can't wait until atn comes out
2023 alectopause: you know it's ok we can wait. i got some fics to write
2024 alectopause: here is 30,000 words on how john's characterization as emperor and lyctorhood interplays with colonialism, imperialism, sexual assault, and misogyny, featuring a full bibliography, a reading list, and peer reviewed by three mutuals
2025 alectopause: gideon would not fucking say that
2026 alectopause: what is everyone's blood pressure headcanons for the characters. i think harrow is orthostatic and gets a regular 90/50

palamedes is 100/60 only because he drinks a lot of water to make sure it stays normal
coronabeth is 120/79 because i think she's a little stressed
ianthe is 95/65 and its only that high because she's tall. orthostatic but tries not to make a big deal of it
dulcie is probably like 80/40, DEF orthostatic
augustine is 150/90 due to smoking and being annoying. hypertension georg
mercymorn is 135/85 purely due to stress
g1deon and pyrrha are 125/70 due to smoking and also stress
nona is like 105/65 because cam and pal make her drink water
pash is 110/70
kiriona is 0/0
