I’ve really come to appreciate weird books. Not particularly horror, or thriller, but like modern queer gothic or sci-fi action fantasy with necromancers or post apocalyptic Americana, just weird-ish stories. Stuff I wouldn’t have read in high school cause I was wimp.
It’s nice because I can’t read it all in one go. I have to take breaks, cause I start to feel like I’m vibrating at a frequency only dogs can hear when they get a little more intense. I think slowing my reading down is helping me appreciate the story more, letting me mull it over and think about it.
I don’t know why but contemporary stuff just doesn’t do that for me, there’s a lot of books I can just read in one shot, and while i enjoy them, sometimes they’re nothing burgers in terms of thinking about them afterwards.
It’s nice, like savoring a sweet coffee with a friend.
