It took an intense level of brainstorming figure out how, exactly, I would make Dark's skin glow in the firelight without making it look unnatural and I can't say that I did the best, but. I did it. And I'm happy with it, so I hope you are too!

Far be it from me to offer unsolicited advice; I mean only to comfort, but creations made in wonder return the love like a guidelight. No matter the newfound maturity of your tastes and refinement of your skills, art is a reflection of the soul (impotent, unserious, risqué, avant-garde or otherwise), and thus will always bear meaning. All art has the potential to save someone. There are people only you can reach, things that only you can do, and growing into your craft only means you can do it better.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that, as a fellow writer, I understand your plight. I, too, have many an old love waiting to see where I'll take them. Growing alongside my art, letting it become different with me, is a thrill. And it would also be quite thrilling to fall in love all over again with 'Home' months later for new and exciting reasons. Hi! I hope you're doing well!!

I saw that you were asking for our HC of Dark's appearance, so I've decided to share with you mine because I keep having this scenario in my head and I think it could be funny.

My personal hc it's that Dark has tapetum lucidum ( that layer in the eyes that provokes the eyeshine on animals' eyes when they reflect light), so that makes him able to see better in dark spaces or with little light, not completely night vision, but better than normal people.

So, and this is my favorite part... if he has eyeshine, then... he does have a pupils!!!, but it's really hard to notice because of the eyeshine + their natural glow, so most of the time it looks like completely red pupilless eyes, unless you are standing at the right angle and watching really close.

Now, how could this be exploited? I had this idea where either Wind or Wild(or both🤔) tried to take a picto and Dark was in the background, and because of the eyeshine, the picto ends up ruined every time they'd trie. And this escalates to either solving the mystery of why this keeps happening or a perfect picto hunt.

honestly, i really love that headcanon!! i think it definitely fits him to have that eyeshine (and dark vision does entirely fit the sort of creature i imagine dark to be -- i've toyed around with the idea of him being colourblind, as well, though that didn't make it into the fic).

i love that scenario as well!! i think hyrule would jump at the chance to help solve the mystery if he at all caught wind of it. team bonding in the form of trying to figure out why dark is Like That. i adore it!!

i've been told this a lot, actually! it's not what i especially intended when initially writing, but i definitely see it now that it's been pointed out, and it is something that i'll be considering in the writing of the fic going forwards... so you could say it's canon! he is definitely autistic.

I really love 'Home.' The paucity of Dark Link fics is, to me, a grief not incomparable to the fulmination of the Library of Alexandria. The loss of potential. The scorched earth. It ails me, and your work fills that hole in my heart like little else.

Would you mind if I drew fanart of it? I've done it for a fic (also about Dark Link) already but I have belatedly realized that some authors might prefer passing their express approval before receiving any fanwork. No worries if you are uncomfortable.

can i just say, i absolutely adore this ask. the first paragraph alone had me entirely captivated (i showed it to a couple of friends, one of whom asked if socrates was back and reading dark link fics... and i couldn't even solidly say no). i mean this genuinely, it brought me a lot of joy, the comparison to the library of alexandria (and i definitely feel you there).

in a way, although i do want to continue home, i've been dreading going back and re-reading the released chapters because, since i started publishing them almost two years ago, i've improved since then and don't think all too highly of the way i wrote back then. but this ask has really made me want to go back and continue planning the fic so that i can take up writing it again (even though i'm not done with other things that i was working on...). basically, i love this ask and i love you for sending it and it is likely that i will get back to work on the fic sooner than i would have otherwise because of this. <3 thank you so much!! stay safe as well!!

okay, on the topic of home, because i know that's what you guys are here for, i want to finally answer the question once and for all of what is happening to the fic.

obviously i haven't updated in a long time, because i got completely side-tracked with another fandom (and another fic), but i do want to make something absolutely clear.

I AM NOT ABANDONING HOME. the story is not discontinued.

my current plan is this: after i finish the final two chapters of the other fic that i've been working on, i will re-read home (to make sure i know exactly what's going on) and then i will plan the rest of the fic out exactly.

not to say that i didn't have a plan before - i did, i always did - but that plan was more important plot points, and i'm going to make exact chapter-by-chapter plans so that it's clear how long left there is to go in the story and to just generally make it easier for me to write chapters for the future. hopefully, once we get to this point, i won't have a hiatus this long ever again.

i really do adore home, and i do want to finish it, and i wanted to let you guys know what's going on with it. i don't know how long it'll be until i finish the other fic and then finish planning home, but i wanted to let you guys know that it will be happening <3 thank you all for your patience!

I see that you said you have some details of how Dark looks like in the story but also don't mind us seeing him in our own vision.

I personally always imagine Dark with solid red pupilless eyes. Just this blank stare that tells you nothing of where and what he's looking at.

i love the idea of that, and I definitely think that dark would take advantage of that fact. I find it likely that he'd have issues with keeping eye contact, so with eyes like those he could keep his face directed to who he's talking to (so that they don't... get upset :)) while actually looking somewhere else

because of this habit, I also think he'd probably also have the unfortunate experience of spacing out while 'looking' at someone and then it seems like he's staring at them. in reality, he's probably staring at, like, a tree. or the sky. (or sky...)

all-in-all, I think that idea is so silly and I absolutely love it! I think there's a lot of interesting ideas that could be had concerning dark's eyes (for example, I've considered the idea of him being colourblind before, which could be fun) and I love hearing people's thoughts on it! thank you for the ask (⁠◕⁠ᴗ⁠◕⁠✿⁠)

alright, so this isn't the best drawing since i sketched it out in about ten minutes, but i've been thinking a lot about the idea of pre-room dark being very dog (specifically, golden retriever) coded, in that he was very excitable and loud, and probably eager to please. he cared a lot. and then, post-room, as has been obvious from the fic, he's very (black) cat coded, he's more quiet and thoughtful. and easily frightened. and a lot less friendly.

in essence, this drawing is my visual rendition of that. i just find it interesting to explore how much he's changed, and i hope you guys like it!!

i just got a comment on home accusing me of using ai to write it (•᷄- •᷅ ;) it seems that they put the fic (or just the chapter? i'm unsure) into some sort of ai detector, so they're trying to use ai to find ai which i find kind of insane, nevermind the fact that it is obviously incorrect - plus those detectors are *known* for being inaccurate!

i'm not super bothered, i just found it kind of insane and thought i might share
