𝐻𝐸 𝐹𝑅𝑂𝑍𝐸. Not because he was scared, but rather because, for the first time in this stupid fight, he realized she wasn't bluffing. The pipe hung loose in his hand, his shoulder throbbing with pain from her punch with her glove, which he realized too late wasn't an ordinary glove. He remained silent, not because of the pain, but because of her stance, which showed she'd shot more than just a few cans off of a fence.
The walkers groaned in the background, now louder. The fight had probably attracted their attention but his gaze didn't leave her, though. He slowly grinned as blood trickled from the corner of his lip. ❝ So that's how it's gonna be? ❞ he snarled. He dropped the pipe, making a loud clanging sound that echoed through the hollow street. Then, he raised both hands. Not really in surrender, more like annoyance. ❝ You call me the dick, but you went straight for the gun, sweetheart ❞ His voice dropped, almost a purr. ❝ It kinda makes all that talk about fairness cute. ❞ With a gentle chuckle, he took a step back, but only one. It was enough to show that he wasn't really trying to test her trigger finger — or her impulsiveness. It was enough to show that he might be reckless, but he wasn't stupid.
Inside, he tried to calculate. The undead were getting closer, so time was running thin. She had a car; he didn't. Even if he wasn't exactly being charming, there was a chance that she needed him to survive. Or they needed each other in that moment. If only for a few minutes.
Ryujin took a deep breath. ❝ Look, I wasn't going to kill you, alright? ❞ he said then, his Korean accent still present, and his voice soft, almost charming, like he used to be in his idol days. ❝ I just needed the car, well… still do, and unless you've got a death wish, standing here arguing about it while those things are close isn't exactly genius. ❞ Ryujin heard another groan and wet snarls. He slowly wiped the back of his hand over his mouth, but this caused blood to smear on his cheek. He didn't know if it was his or hers, and he didn't care.
Slightly annoyed, but trying to suppress it, he said, ❝ You've got the gun, that makes you the winner… ya-ya… congratulations. ❞ It sounded almost an insult, because a certain tension was slowly building in the air and his body. The Undead were coming closer and closer from all sides.
❝ But hear me out, they are closer now, you can hear that too. It doesn't exactly sound like there are only a few of them… So what now, winner? You're planning to shoot me or kill me by leaving me here, with more blood on your hands, another person's death on your conscience? Because staying here is going to get us both eaten. ❞ He stepped back. His face, however, showed that he meant his words. But he knew, trust was a hard thing in a world like this. ❝ Your decision. I promise I won't kill you or fight you again. ❞
"You tried to put me to sleep, dude ── I don't think you can exactly play moral high ground," she couldn't pull that card either, but who could claim moral superiority in a world where dead people walk? "What was the plan after you knocked me out, huh? Were you going to pick me up, put me in the back seat and drive away while I had a nice nap?" her tone was sarcastic, almost mocking... "I seriously doubt it. Maybe you weren't trying to outright kill me, but leaving me stranded and out-cold on the ground is as good as, don't you think?" The barrel of her gun remained pointed directly at his chest. Underneath the tension and taste of blood and the ambient sounds of rotters coming for their next meal, it's almost... nice to speak with someone. Someone alive. Someone who isn't just a memory, or a comforting ghost on her shoulder. That didn't mean she trusted him or was willing to lower her guard, not yet. She was still stubborn, and suspicious, and mad that he'd managed to catch her off her guard in the first place.
"Look, all that talk sounds perfectly reasonable ── however, that doesn't change one main fact... if I bust your kneecap, all those rotters are going to start chowing down on you like you're a Sunday dinner, and that'll give me plenty of time to get away." Despite that point, her inner monologue pointed out (infuriatingly), it would be easier to get the car going with a push-start... Bushes rustled a few feet behind the stranger she owed her bleeding nose to, a rotter dragged itself along the ground slowly, determinedly.
"Oh, fuck it." Marina finally said, flicking her wrist as she fired on his left side, blowing a hole through the head of a walker as it lunged. "Fine, but you better be ready to work for your ride. Put your weapons in the trunk. Move ─ quickly. Then latch it shut and push the car," she backed around the driver's side of the car, opening the door with one hand, inspecting his movements to determine if she would lower her gun (for now), whilst scanning her peripherals. The growling and snarling grew louder, and they were drawing closer quicker than she expected ... maybe she'd underestimated how many of them were out there. It might not have been the most rational decision, because he could still very easily turn on her once they were inside the vehicle... But two sets of hands were better than one. "I'll push from up here and steer us onto the road ─── when we crest the hill, and when I say so, you jump in the back seat, or whatever seat you can get to. Just be inside when I turn the engine over, or you'll get left behind."

she stares out the window, eyes fixed on the street below. they are several floors up in this apartment building, ten floors to be exact. the higher the level, the safer they were. the dead roam the streets below, in a constant search for fresh meat. it’s been a year since the outbreak happened, and olivia still can’t quite believe this is how their lives turned out. everything had been going so good, she had finally after years of wanting become a mother to the most precious boy. only one year old and the world he should have grown up in fell apart. noah was now two, and currently asleep in his crib in the other room. he was safe with the watchful eye of the stabler children, but olivia still worried about how long that safety would last.
she turns her head to look over her shoulder as elliot approaches. she owes him so much. olivia was capable as a survivor, she had the same training as him, she could be ruthless when she had to be. but when things went to hell, she was a new mother to an infant. without elliot’s help she doesn’t know if she would be here today. he came for her when things descended into chaos. he rescued her, he got her and noah out safe. it was a debt she would never be able to repay.
she couldn’t help herself, as she reaches out and wraps her arms around him. it was unexpected, unprompted, but she felt an overwhelming surge of emotion. the end of the world will do that to a woman. ❝ thank you. ❞ she whispered, pulling back and she can’t stop the blush from coloring her cheeks. she felt a little foolish, she always did when she let her emotions get the better of her. ❝ sorry… i was just thinking about when all of this started. i wouldn’t have made it if you didn’t come find me. my son is alive because of you, and… i guess maybe the lack of sleep is catching up to me. ❞

Lizzie was savaging the floor above them; they'd cleared it of the dead the previous day and disposed of the bodies down the long-broken incinerator. The space would serve their purpose, at least until the last of the large group of walkers had cleared the streets and it was safe to keep moving. It was a collapsing building ── and the subsequent echoic, booming noise ── that drew a sizable group into the immediate area. That was three days ago. His footfalls were softened by the cheap carpet, but she still felt his approach. Olivia Benson missed nothing, after all. The embrace was unexpected, but never unwelcome; his arms knew exactly how to slot around her ─── he didn't even have to think. It was instinctive, natural. "There was never a version of this where I didn’t come for you, Liv. You're my partner, my family," Elliot smiled, tired but tenderly serious expression on his gruffly bearded face. He could tell she was tired, and reflective, and now probably felt silly for her vulnerability; he'd been reading her for almost half his life, and he could see emotions rising and dancing in her eyes. "You don't need to thank me."
Stepping closer, he laid a hand on her shoulder, "take a break, take a breath, look—" he prompted her to look over to the side, watching for a few seconds as Eli leaned over the makeshift cot and tucked the blanket in around Noah. The sight warmed his heart, and he knew it would do the same for her. "his biggest fan is on duty right now, and it's quietening down outside. I know how hard it is for you to feel like you can ... switch off ─── but Kathleen is on patrol, Noah's safe and resting, and you should be too." he squeezed her shoulder, smiled and drew her closer, his next words more of friendly instruction than a suggestion, "Come on, Lizzie made soup, you should have some. And then rest."
