something I enjoy and appreciate about SG-1 is that they often plunk you down into a story that has already begun. Yes, we're on a new planet with new characters but we've been talking to them for a while actually so no need for introductions or relationship building, there is an established dynamic here and you get to experience this new place and these new people as themselves when they are at their ease and not necessarily in the initial shakeup of First Contact.

“Criston Cole’s death is anticlimactic” THATS THE FUCKING POINT! He thinks that he is this great warrior who is going to die heroically in battle after taking down tons of other soldiers but instead he is killed by a woman and the rest of his men get slaughtered. His misogyny against Rhaenyra is what lead him to the green’s side of the war. For a woman to take him out like it’s nothing is a fitting end. It also shows how pointless this war has become. No one is really fighting for green or black, it’s just fighting to fight and in the end death is meaningless. Media comprehension is in the toilet in this fandom.

Activist charged with felony after giving border agent "duress code" that wiped his phone

The government says destroying his own data during an airport interrogation was illegal.

In early 2025, Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick was on his way home following a trip abroad. After landing in the US, customs agents demanded access to his Pixel phone, which was running an alternative version of Android called GrapheneOS. Rather than hand over his data, Tunick used a clever feature of the software to delete everything. Now, he’s facing federal charges.

The first hearing in this case happened last week, according to The Guardian, during which government attorneys and agents claimed that Tunick was subjected to a standard secondary interrogation at an international airport. During that encounter, agents were “looking for anything that’s prohibited.” However, Tunick’s legal team alleges he was targeted for his activism.

Tunick was involved with a group called Defend the Atlanta Forest, which opposed the construction of an enormous law enforcement training facility in the area often known as Cop City. What Tunick didn’t know, according to his lawyers, was that he’d been placed on a watch list for his actions and that Customs and Border Protection had discussed over email plans to detain him upon his arrival back in the US for “suspected terrorism activities.”

I have good things to say about Nolan’s Odyssey. Egg on my face.

I haven’t stopped thinking about Helen’s last line, asking Telemachus to pass along an apology to Penelope, another presumed widow of the Trojan War.

People have already pointed out how Odysseus dodging the guilt and responsibility of the sacking of Troy contrasts to Robert Oppenheimer feeling crushed by the legacy of the bomb. But with Helen, we are given a character whose guilt is not her own.

There’s those who run from it, those who can’t ignore it, and then there’s those who are forced to carry it.

The last line of the movie goes something like “history will forget our flaws.” History will also stain the legacies of the innocent.

Lupita Nyong’o is so good in the movie. And her scream as Clytemnestra when it dips into the Oresteia gave me the biggest chills. Incredible performance.

One tragic aspect of the Odyssey that I've never really seen handled by any adaptation is the link between Odysseus' marriage and the Trojan War itself.

When Helen was of age to be married, all the Lords of Greece came to seek her hand. This was an issue for her stepfather the King of Sparta who could only pick one husband and then would have to deal with the far greater number of angry rejected suitors.

One suitor was Odysseus, then a younger man. He quickly ascertained that he had no chance of marrying Helen. Ithaca was too poor for him to even bring any proper gifts, let alone a dowry. But he did catch the eye of the King's niece, one Penelope.

Now Penelope was still a bit out of Odysseus' league, but not so much as Helen was. So he makes a deal with the King of Sparta. Support my bid to marry Penelope, and I'll give you a solution to this suitors problem. The King agrees, so Odysseus suggests all the suitors swear an oath to defend Helen's marriage from anyone who might strike against it. They all, including Odysseus, so swear, and Helen is married to Menelaus. The King proves as good as his word, and Penelope is wed to Odysseus.

Of course this means that Odysseus has now bound himself to fight for Helen and Menelaus. After an attempt to feign madness he is forced to fulfill his duty.

So his own plan, to marry Penelope and stop a hoard of ravenous suitors, ends with him forced to defend his own marriage from a hoard of ravenous suitors.
