And Benedict’s answer on pilot is not much different from most interview. He commented in pilot that he had shabby hair and jean not so dapper as in the series.

Actually, he reigns it in. He’s a lot funnier than he allows. He’s true to his character. He’s brilliantly funny in it, but there’s a whole lot more funny, and I think he’s very keen to play John as John Watson, not as Martin Freeman being funny, which we all know he can do effortlessly, or so he makes it appear. That’s what makes him a great actor… I remember seeing- well, I don’t remember seeing him, but he was in stage productions that I went to see at The National. He was in Mother Courage and Volpone in that ensemble of actors. And the break I remember, like a lot of people, is The Office, but the amount of truth in that, that’s what I mean by breaking in comedy. If you can bring truth to something, and make it painfully funny because it’s real, then you can go far with that talent, and Martin’s proved that time after time.
