Two more classes down!
5 days in!
I was FINALLY able to speak to my mentor yesterday. I loved him! He was so encouraging and I think he will really encourage me to accelerate. So, my courses were finally approved.
I am happy to update that I passed my first class yesterday!
I am going to try and take the OA for foundations for success in business today!
If you have any questions about what I did to pass this class, please let me know!
I’m doing a thing! Taking a webinar tonight to kick off this term right!
Weekend Warrior-ish
So, I did not get much done Friday. My husband finished his training early, so we took advantage of our baby sitter and went to see a movie.
Saturday we volunteered for “Make a Difference Day” in the Atlanta area. My husband works for Inspire Brands and their charitable organization is the Arby’s Foundation. So, we worked with them and Hands on Atlanta at a local underfunded public school to clean it up and bring some of their green spaces back to life. We took our 9 year old with us, trying to teach him the importance of giving back.
Needless to say, we were kinda wasted for getting anything done at home on Saturday.
Sunday I woke up with the worst migraine and went back to bed and slept til 11:30 after my husband got up with the kids. I did eventually get up and get some household chores done and then while our toddler napped, I came downstairs and worked on vocabulary for C232 - Intro to HR. It’s been the set that I have struggled with the most.
So, here I sit on Monday morning. School starts FRIDAY! My birthday and Halloween is Thursday and I’m back at these words full-time! Let’s do this!
1 More Week
I’ve officially hit the one week mark in my countdown for school! Pretty excited! Spent yesterday working through some information for Intro to HR. Realized there was a lot of terminology that I did not know for that class. I broke it down and made a new set of terms that was vocab only. (https://quizlet.com/445268238/learn)
It’s helped me focus a lot.
Also, played around with an excel file that sets up each class and a goal end date for it. If I gave myself a week for each class, I’d have 3 classes at the end of the semester.
THREE! Including the capstone!
Maybe I try for it? IDK
My goal is 2 weeks for the first 4 classes and then we will see from there!
Review and Repeat
So, yesterday I just did not get done as much as I wanted to, as far as school goes. I again reviewed the terms that I studied yesterday. The plan was, after that, that I would started working on terminology for Intro to HR (C232).
But, work. Work got in the way. Real Estate can be very frustrating sometimes and as I am trying to put it on pause for school, I’m still trying to finish a few transactions. At this point though, I want to just wash my hands and be done. /sigh
So, today I am trying to catch up to where I wanted to be yesterday. This class is a little more out of my element. There is a lot of specific legislation to remember, so I am going to start with that and add on the other terminology as I go.
Quizlet is Amazing
There, I said it. I’ve done a lot of research on how people are studying and passing their OAs. One thing that keeps popping up is Quizlet. Over and over again, I’d see it on Reddit or on one of the couple Facebook groups that I joined. As I haven’t officially started my term yet, and I really want to be ready to just jump right it, I’ve been using it to prepare.
Yesterday, I spent the day here, studying for C994 - Fundamentals for Success in Business, https://quizlet.com/358944139/c994-fundamentals-for-success-in-business-flash-cards/ and after reading a post on Reddit, discovered a handy little feature. When you click on the “Learn” option under the “Study” list of options, it realllllly makes you work through the cards. It adds in a few at a time, first getting you familiar with them, until you’ve answered them correctly multiple times and have them ‘mastered’. It does this by making you answer them in a variety of ways, like multiple choice, flipping the flashcard and being honest with yourself about whether you knew it or not, or fill in the blank.
I worked through all 207 terms in this set yesterday until they were all mastered. Then I took a test on Quizlet and did 50 multiple choice questions and 50 true or false and I missed 1 out of 100. Now to be honest, I don’t like the way some of these flashcards are worded or formatted, but I can’t actually access the material yet, so I’m making do with what I have.
It’s my understanding that you can customize the set yourself. I was actually taking notes in notebook as I went through the terms, just for the ones that I missed repeatedly. That helps me a lot, I tend to do better when I can highlight important terms and I would do that in my notes.
All in all, really enjoying this. I was a math major before this, so I never really used Quizlet. Technology is amazing.
It’s almost time.
Technically, my journey starts November 1st and I could not be more filled with excitement and anticipation. There’s a healthy dose of fear as well. My hope is that by sharing my journey, I can help others. Don’t make my mistakes. Learn from my success. Help me stay motivated.
This is what I’ve done so far: 1. Joined r/WGU and r/WGUbusinessmanagement on Reddit 2. Joined WGU College of Business and WGU Accelorators Groups on FB 3. Created a WGU-November 1 group for others that are also starting with me. 4. Purchased and set up my webcam. 5. Purchased a white board.
I’m also studying via Quizlet for classes that have an OA. If your new to it or want to know about how to maximize it’s benefit, I’d be happy to help.
What led me here?
People choose online universities for a lot of different reasons. I’m not really any different. I am a mother and a wife. My husband has a really great career and I have always felt like I was struggling to compete with his successes. He’s financially capable of taking care of our family with out me needing to add to it, but I still want to be able to financially contribute.
My family underwent a series of tragic losses a few years ago. My nephew, who my parents actually adopted, passed away of a heart attack very unexpectedly at the age of 15. That was in May of 2015. Later that year, I became pregnant and at 31 weeks, in January of 2016 my son, Tucker, was stillborn. 4 weeks to the day later, my only living grandparent, also passed away. So in less than 9 months time, it was just blow after blow.
When all of that occurred, I was actually enrolled as a senior at a brick and mortar school. I was pursing a degree that I wasn’t really interested in, and after everything, my mind was not in the place to continue, I was just depressed and fell into a dark place. After dropping out of school, I just worked my retail job for a while. After a while, I decided to completely change course and get my real estate license.
I’ve now been doing real estate for about 3 years and I truly enjoy it and I’ve learned a lot. I’m eligible to attempt getting my broker’s license in a few months, but I really want my degree first. So, I did a lot of research and found the WGU was the best fit for me.
My plan is to accelerate my degree. I start Nov 1st, and I am going for my BSBM. I transferred in only 30 CU’s (WGU’s version of credit hours). I had been a math and history major before and never took any sort of business classes, so basically I’ve got my core knocked out.
I believe my first semester will look like this, based on what transfers in and the typical degree plan.
Fundamentals for Success in Business
Principles of Management
Intro to HRM
Business Ethics
So now here I sit, anxious to get this thing done.
