he was leaning against his headphone, staring off into space when he heard his laptop ringing. he glanced at the screen, ready to ignore whoever it was, but when he saw the icon for his mother, he grabbed the laptop and pulled it to his lap and answered, “hey, mom.”
“quinn!” the bright smile of rapunzel caused him to smile. even if her hair wasn’t golden anymore, the queen of c/orona was radiant. she had her tiara on and a bright pink dress, but her hair was still unruly and he was pretty sure there was twig in her hair. he guessed his mom had some adventures. “oh! you’re blond! makes me miss my blond hair. it looks so good on you!”
“thanks, mom,” he said, his voice soft, “how’s dad?”
“oh, you know your dad,” rapunzel giggled. from the background, he was sure he heard his father arguing with cassandra, “cassandra is back too! she said she may pass by mythos in a few months to say high to you.”
quinn raised a brow, “oh, really? that would be nice.”
rapunzel’s smile fell, “quinn, what’s wrong?”
“huh?”
“you can’t lie to me. you never could. you’re like an open book,” rapunzel crossed her arms and looked at quinn through the screen. honestly, quinn felt she was looking right through him.
everything was wrong. well, not everything, but something that was important to him. his friendship with flix was completely destroyed. he hadn’t spoken to the other in almost a week. even when flix was dating tan, that was a record. he still said hi and went to see if flix was okay, even for a minute or two. any time he saw flix now, he avoided the other and went the other way. it was childish and he didn’t doubt flix noticed, but after the first few near misses with flix, he found himself holed up in his room, marathoning TV shows with rowan.
it was a little pathetic for the guy who loved being outside and having adventures.
“mom..., how do you get over heart break?”
rapunzel was quiet for a moment. her face shifting into one of understanding. she knew about flix. quinn told his mom everything. she was the most important person in his life. he would leave out the detail about him having sex with flix, but he knew he would tell him mom what happened.
“well, it is hard to get over, quinn. i told you about all the times eugene and i nearly broke up. i think that first time was the worst. when i thought he was betraying me to steal the crown,” rapunzel smiled sweetly at the memory even if it was a sad one. she knew it had just been mother gothel, so she never blamed eugene. “or when i thought he was marrying stallion. or when he actually betrayed me with keeping me away from the moonstone. love isn’t easy.”
quinn chuckled, “those all involved life or death situations, mom. my heart break is more...”
rapunzel tapped a finger to her chin, “normal?”
“yeah,” quinn sighed, leaning his head against the headboard, “i never told him... would things have been different if i did?”
the queen sat back in her chair and shrugged, “it’s hard to say.”
“i said some things... and insinuated some things... i hurt him the most with those,” quinn admitted, shaking his head, “i was so angry but i didn’t know how or who i was even angry at. i don’t think i’m mad at flix. it wouldn’t make sense. i never said anything, but i never hid it either. i don’t think i’m mad at this other guy in flix’s life because he doesn’t know how i feel and even if he did, i haven’t done anything. maybe...”
“you’re just mad at yourself?”
“yeah...,” quinn nodded, “mad that i never said anything. can i blame you and dad for having such an amazing romance and setting my standards too high?”
rapunzel laughed lightly, “that’s shifting the blame, quinn. that’s a no no and from the sounds of it, you did it to these boys. it’s not fair of you.”
quinn grabbed a pillow and held it to his chest. he rested his cheek against the soft fabric and looked away from the screen. that was definitely a good way of putting it. he shifted all the blame and hurt onto flix because it alleviated the stress from him. he was so scared that if he admitted his feelings, he would have lost flix in someway. the other would out right reject him or they would have gotten together and things got bad or... flix cheated. it was a possibility.
“i take so much pride in adventures and seeing how everything plays out,” quinn started, turning his attention back to his mother, “so why is it that when it comes to love, i’m so terrified of seeing where it ends up?”
rapunzel hummed, “maybe... because your heart is the most vulnerable piece of you. yeah, you could break a bone from falling off a cliff or get in a fight with bandits, but those wounds heal eventually. heart break... there will always be a scar that could open at any minute.”
quinn smiled sadly and nodded his head. he buried his face in the pillow and sighed before pushing it away from him and looking at rapunzel, “i miss you, mom. you and dad.”
“we miss you too,” she smiled and reached out to caress the screen as if it was actually quinn. he reached out and rested his hand on the glass. he really missed her more than anything and while he still couldn’t tell her he didn’t think he was ready to be king of c/orona, at the end of the day, he knew his mother would understand.
he guessed that was a bad habit. he kept secrets that protected himself, so he didn’t hurt the ones closest to him. that was something he needed to work on.
“what should i do?”
rapunzel smiled, “be honest with him next time you see him. if it is all you can do.”
quinn guessed that was the best advice he could get. be honest. tell flix he was scared. admit his fears. he didn’t know if it would work and he didn’t have the best expectations no matter what, but for now, he guessed that was the best he could do.
“i’ll do my best,” quinn nodded, “i love you, mom.”
“i love you too, quinn. come visit us soon. your dad is going stir crazy without you around to keep him in check,” rapunzel laughed, glancing back at euegene who was in a headlock from cassandra. the two saw rapunzel looking at them and waved, calling to quinn. quinn chuckled and waved back before rapunzel looked at him again, “I am proud of you, quinn.”
quinn smiled at her, “i love you too, mom.”
