Earned her way to stardom without sleeping with executives for roles.

Refused to date people for publicity just because 20th Century Fox wanted her to.

Left 20th Century Fox because she refused to let them get away with treating her badly and paying her a tiny wage, just because of her “dumb blonde” image.

Was only paid a fraction of her co-star’s wage even though she was the star of the movies and the biggest box office pull, but still went ahead with the movies because she was so passionate about acting.

Studied method acting at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg, who said that she was one of his best students along with Marlon Brando.

Had a personal library of over 500 books and rarely read fiction - she was desperate to learn and educate herself.

Was sexually abused as a child but then went on to encourage the sexual liberation of women in the 1950s. 

One of the first people to speak openly about sexual abuse.

One of the first people to openly support gay rights.

Supported many charities such as the Milk Fund, March of Dimes, Arthritis and Rheumatism foundation.

Donated her time and money to these charities.

Visited orphanages and hospitals on her own time to surprise the people there.

Married one of the greatest literary minds of the 20th century

Suffered two miscarriages and one ectopic pregnancy and still put on a brave face for her fans.

Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to play at the popular Mocambo, in Hollywood, because of her race. Marilyn, who loved her music and supported civil rights, called the owner of the Mocambo and told him that if he booked Ella immediately, she would take a front table every night. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. After that, Ella never had to play in a small jazz club again.

This is probably going to get me some odd looks, but this makes me think about Jane Austen!

It’s so funny, but so deeply dependent on this specific moment in time, in 2016, when Adele is all over the damned radio, and nobody (in this really specific cultural sphere) needs context for the joke, and part of the joke is that nobody needs context for the joke. 

There’s a bit in Pride and Prejudice where Elizabeth and Caroline are walking on the grounds at Netherfield, and they bump into Darcy and Mrs. Hurst.  Caroline, who’s trying really hard to get Darcy to put a ring on it, immediately attaches herself to his free arm, leaving Lizzie kinda awkwardly stranded, since the path in the garden is only wide enough for three.  Darcy’s embarrassed by this blatant rudeness, and tries to say, “Hey, let’s go walk someplace else, where we can all fit,” but Lizzie, who thinks they’re all a bunch of boring losers and wants an excuse to ditch them, retorts, “You are charmingly group’d, and appear to uncommon advantage. The picturesque would be spoilt by admitting a fourth.”

The year Austen wrote P&P, everybody was obsessed with this guy named William Gilpin and his ideas about art and nature appreciation.  “Picturesque” was the word used to describe ideal landscapes, and by ideal Gilpin et al literally meant things like “that hill is adorned with the correct number of cows.” Three is a pleasing number for cows on hillsides (and otters on otterslides!); four is gauche.

And that example was so well known that that is certainly what Lizzie was alluding to, and all four characters, and most of Austen’s educated readership, would have known it. Lizzie just called them a bunch of cows and ran off.

This is why Jane Austen is my favourite.

I would definitely agree that the sheep is the leader. The chicken is mostly there to cook up crazy distractions. The bull is the quiet one who just gets stuff done. Goat’s dragged into chicken’s antics, and acts like he hates that when really he loves chicken’s crazy schemes. Alpaca is the group’s conscience.
