Sonic the Hedgehog

Age: 25

Sonic is the Green Hills settlement’s resident courier. He frequently leaves the settlement in search of other pockets of civilization and monitoring any Badnik movements. If there’s any news from outside Green Hills, Sonic is the one to find it, and Tails is usually the first to hear about it. He can also carry light supplies from Green Hills into the outskirts if needed.

He keeps a small radio-cassette player hybrid hanging at his hip that he uses to contact the settlement from long distances. Tails has found that radio signals are more reliable than the internet - the few remaining connections to the world wide web were largely hi-jacked by Eggnet after the Ovoid took over Eggman’s forces.

Despite how dire everything is, Sonic is usually the bright smile in the group. He never really lost his inner zeal, and to Tails’ chagrin, he never really lost his reckless abandon either. No matter what, though, he helps maintain the hope that keeps the world running.

Courier seemed like a solid role for Sonic. It keeps him running…he’d probably go stir crazy if he was forced to stay in one spot for long. He’s part of the levity that keeps this AU from diving into grimdark…I hope so anyways.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Age: 18 (Going on 40)

Tails is the main engineer and repairman of ths Green Hills settlement. He keeps everything up and running...though, he sometimes neglects himself in the process. Wind turbines, water purifiers, prosthetics if needed...everything.

He's often too tired to sleep - Sonic constantly has to remind him to rest, but there's just so much to do that he might get a half-hour in if he's lucky. Coffee is his constant companion. It used to be mints, but those have become a luxury in this day and age. Amy and Cosmo keep a pot of mint ready in the Greenhouse - it doesn't pack the same punch as the little candies, but Tails appreciates their effort...and he will occasionally chew a couple leaves to calm his nerves.

He was the first to discover what happened to the Badniks after the Sundering event 10 years ago. He hasn't been able to look at them the same way since.

A small continuation of this AU. I hope I didn't make him too depressing...I imagine he can still work up a smile. And while stress can make him a bit short with people, he's still kind - still tries his best to keep the hope alive, even if he might not always be feeling it.

Overview

It's only a matter of time, really. Do enough Sonic art, and you'll feel the itch to make an AU.

This one takes place 10 years after an event known simply as the Sundering - the result of one scientist's mid-life crisis. When you're a guy in your 50s, and you've got an ego the size of a planet, and the resources and moral bankruptsy to back it up, you'll go to any lengths to leave your mark.

Thing is - will he be able to handle the consequences that come with it?

Updated my rat prince’s design. I gotta break down and update all my OCs’ reference pages one day. Make them look a little nicer, but here’s what I got for now.

Tails and Sonic as they'd appear in my 10 years later AU. It'll primarily focus on my OCs, but the Freedom Fighters will be making appearances...some mroe frequently than others.

I find it funny that the adult hedgehogs in the Archie comics look almost identical to Sonic. Mobians age wierd, clearly. He might grow a few centimeters, but he's not going to change much physically.

These aren't to scale...that's what I get for drawing them on separate canvases.

Rounding out my trio of characters with a fun lizard man. The eldest brother of multiple siblings, left orphaned by an Eggman attack. He's sort of "adopted" the kids in his community as well, that were impacted by it as well.

After Ghost and Sylas entered into the shelter that he'd sort of set up for those kids, seeking a place to lay low, he let them. Even though they sort of came in uninvited. He didn't know either of them, but he does try to see the best in others...and strays are common place for him.

Given what we got with Nine, Tails would be terrifying in another life. Eggman wouldn't even come close to how scary Tails could get if he really wanted to.

I had "rat prince" in my head and had to get it out. Here he is - full of himself and full of heart all at the same time. Ghost needed a friend that wasn't a Wisp.

Sylas went into self-imposed exile (i.e. ran away from home), and frequently has to dodge mercenaries being sent to take him back. When he first met Ghost, he thought Ghost was a merc sent to capture him.

I gave him cryokinesis - he can summon ice swords. Because it's cool.

A potential friend for Ghost. Their first encounter was probably pretty intense - Sylas was still rather fresh on ditching the family, and likely assumed his family sent someone to catch him...or do something worse. Of course, Ghost is too earnest for his own good.

Rat prince kinda has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Deciding further on what sort of background I want this character to have.

I don't want Ghost to lean too edgy...but I guess there's little edge. What if someone was permanently fused with a wisp....or the energy of one through some experiment gone wrong (I'm leaning more energy than just straight up fusing two creatures together). I'm leaning on it being an accident...but a creature would have still been lost in the process, so that's where some "edge" might come in. My idea is he doesn't really remember his origin or even his original name...which is sad.

But I don't imagine Ghost being bitter, you know? Like he's kind of just accepted what he is now. There's room for him to potentially learn what happened to him, but he's not in any big rush to learn it. Was he a normal hedgehog once upon a time? Maybe. But, I don't think it would change him fundamentally.

My first OC, look at that!

His quills gave me some issues initially but I realized if they're ghosty wispy quills, they don't need to be a single uniform shape lmao. I imagine he's super fluffy around his chest area. But I also imagine him being a bit cold to the touch...not uncomfotable, but definitely noticeable.

His quills are more solid where they meet his head and fade into his chest fluff, but the further out it'd be like running your hand through a heavy mist.

Haven't quite decided on what sort of story he'd have. The name "Ghost" implies a lot of things...I don't see him as a literal ghost, but calling him alive might be a stretch as well. And, in my mind, his abilities do line up with some classic ghost abilities.

I want to see a story where Tails and Sonic slowly grow apart. This would definitely be a future!AU type of deal but...yeah. As he grows into his own, Tails is probably going to feel an itch for independence that will grow increasingly difficult to ignore. Sonic taught him how to fly - and like most birds, this one will eventually want to leave the nest, so to speak.

I wonder how strong Tails is...I mean, he's constantly carrying Sonic places when he doesn't have his plane. In Heroes, he carries Sonic and Knuckles simultaneously. Imagine him barreling into you at full speed.
