i’m happy with how i’ve done this assessment. not 100%, but i think with current situation i did very well. can’t wait to animate more in the future.

video essay for this blog.
i’m happy with how i’ve done this assessment. not 100%, but i think with current situation i did very well. can’t wait to animate more in the future.
video essay script
the read more contains the script of my video essay, coming in at roughly 940 words.
final playblast of a character walk cycle
still can’t quite believe i decided to go with this, but we’re here now. i should note it’s helpful that the arms barely move at all in this certain run cycle. makes things a lot easier
blocking pass of the character walk cycle
this is more of a run cycle than a walk cycle, and hopefully marks won’t be deducted for that. i found the run cycle a little more challenging as there’s obviously more movement and area to cover with the legs and feet.
reference for my selected character ‘walk cycle’; the fabled naruto run.
(if you understand this meme then i applaud you)
final playblast of a full body walk cycle
this seems like a minor exercise but it’s honestly made me feel some sense of achievement. about 4 months ago i’d never even opened maya. now i can generate an albeit generic walk cycle, but we’ve all got to start somewhere.
blocking pass of a full body walk cycle
now we’re getting somewhere; adding arms which follow an arc and an upper body that responds to the movement of the legs
final playblast of a hips only walk cycle
in hindsight i should’ve increased the window of time in which the hips are rotating forward and to the side in the passing position, but for my first ever walk cycle i’m pretty pleased
blocking pass of a bipedal walk with hips only rig
thought i’d add in a front view too for these walk cycles
a compilation of generic walk cycles
pretty useful in seeing exactly how the joints move to achieve the smoothness of a walk cycle
final playblast of a full body rig shifting weight from one foot to another
not much else to add. again, a straightfoward and rather simple exercise, but important nonetheless
blocking pass of a full body rig shifting weight from one foot to another
this helped with visualising exactly what the hips and shoulders do in the process of shifting weight from one foot to the other.
final playblast of weight shift of hips rig
in retrospect i made this animation way too long/way too many frames, oops
blocking pass of weight shift of hips rig
i thought this was simple enough; hopefully am not missing the point of this exercise entirely
basic weight shift video reference. very minor movements but they obviously are very important in not just the physics but also the personality of a character.
final playblast for a character lifting a weighted object. this exercise taught me in particular how important it is to save multiple versions of one animation, and to save regularly.
admittedly i ran out of time on this particular task oops
will revisit when i have more time
