This is the final version of my video. I am pretty happy with this.
It has an overall grunge and dark feel to the video. Having a green colour for the whole video and the intense, creepy music also added to the overall effect. Although originally this was supposed to be a horror video, this has become something where people can create their own interpretations of the video. Â
In this one, I’ve added horror music and a green effect to the video for selected scenes. Throughout the video, it alternates between the original recording and the edited, horror-like video. I wanted to see whether the video would be more powerful when the horror scenes only pop up every now and then, or if the entire video is edited to have that horror feel to it.Â
This is quite similar to the last one, except that I have removed the firework video from it. I mainly wanted to experiment and see if the firework adds color and contribute the overall aesthetic of the video, or the explosion of colors is too overwhelming when watching it.
This is one version of the videos that I outputted. I mixed up scenes from the original video (with firework) and a datamoshed version. When datamoshing it, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the result was quite bright and colorful. It took me awhile to figure out that if I exported the video with lower quality, then I’ll have an easier time datamoshing it.Â
I wasn’t sure however, whether adding the firework video on top of the original video added to the overall feel. Adding the datamoshed scenes in definitely gives a bright, cheery feel to it.
I experimented a lot with this. I outputted 4 different videos, the screenshot for each is attached above. Mainly I played around with datamoshing the video and overlaying the existing video with this. While playing around with it, I especially like how it makes it seem like there is another, slightly more invisible girl in the video.Â
Programs used: Adobe Premiere Pro, Avidemux, Camcorder app with iPhone.
I found an app on my phone that allows me to record videos with a VHS style. As I plan on making a horror video, this VHS style video add to the horror effect of the video.
What I tried out:
First 5 seconds from 20 random public domain videos
Supercut of hugs in Friends
Supercut of Oh Gods / Oh My Gods in Friends
While all of these were okay, I was not too impressed by the results. With the last one (Supercut of Oh Gods / Oh My Gods in Friends), I experimented with using a firework video on top of it to see what kind of result I can get. Changing its blending mode also gave me an ink blot / blood explosion feel (depending on the colour if the firework).Â
However, after experimenting with all these, I became interested in the idea of using just colour and audio to set the mood of a video.Â
This is actually pretty similar to what I had in mind for one of my ideas. Also, apparently a ton of these have been done before.Â
This is a video of the glitches and bugs found in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. I like how the video has been composed, especially the combination of the music and the glitches there. It fitted perfectly. Maybe I can do something like this (combination of music / character movement) using The Sims for my final project.Â
Final Project: Ideas
It was quite hard for me to narrow down to one specific idea due to the broad nature of the project. These are some ideas I was considering for my final project:
Supercut of New Year’s countdown (hard to find TVs and movies with just the New Year countdown)
Datamoshing Processing video (again, with no prior concept, it’s hard to determine what I want to do in Processing)
Glitches in game (Sims - is it enough for 1 minutes?)
Supercut of all hugs from Friends (might not be too engaging / entertaining)
Similarly, supercut of all the Oh Gods / Oh My God from all Friends character (might not be too engaging / entertaining)
Every life has a story video using Sims (overlaying Sims video with subtitle)
Selecting 20 public domain videos at random, and making a video of the first 5 seconds of each oneÂ

So far, this is one of my favourite datamoshing video. Very clever and entertaining. The whole video works very well. I love how the creator of the video used datamoshing to bring life to static images.

Paik challenged the notion of the art object as a self-contained entity and established a process of instant feedback, in which the viewer’s actions have a direct effect on the form and meaning of the work.Â
I’m curious to know what people think when they see this type of video. I wonder if people know this was done deliberately or if they think something is wrong with their internet & the video.
I have no idea how they did this but it’s very fascinating to watch.
