ok so this is a super brief request for a step sibling (or two!!!) for ilyas (fc: zayn Malik). his mother died when he was young (around nine years old I haven't decided yet) and his father married shortly afterwards, to a woman who already had a kid(s??). it took some adjustment, but ilyas was ultimately happy to finally have a sibling (or two!!!) because he was kind of lonely, growing up an only child. How the step sibling(s) reacted is totally up to you! Maybe they hated their new step family. Maybe they loved them. Maybe they felt completely indifferent. Whatever u like!! Fc is obviously totally open,since there is no blood relation, as is age, gender, etc, just take them pls!!

when people looked at alfie in high school, their instinct was to immediately paint him as the "nerdy kid who will do all my homework for me, otherwise i'll stuff him into the locker." they expected him to be incredibly smart, to become a lawyer or a doctor or engineer simply because he was asian and he grew up in a small town where his race was a minority, because he grew up in a country where stereotypes were abound and impossible to escape. nothing ticked him off more than that, because it couldn't be further from the truth. he was actually quite terrible at the majority of his subjects at school - in particular, math and science. for whatever reason, people seemed to get upset when he pointed that out and they later learned it was true, when they tried to copy off his exams or homework and nearly failed, the same way he did. he almost flunked out of high school - the only reason he didn't was because his parents hired him a (white!!! gasp!!) tutor and he got it together by the time he was sitting for his SATs.

it became exceptionally clear early on that alfie had a lot to say. about everything. from the treatment of ex-pats and minorities, to the food served in the cafeteria - there wasn’t a single issue that floated into alfie’s mind that didn’t soon find itself on a forum of some kind, whether it was his family’s dining table during dinner, his school’s newspaper, or that time he had hijacked the P.A. system at school to call jocks out on their heteronormative bullshit. the latter fueled rumors about his sexuality, which he denied profusely as he claimed he was simply a supporter of the lgbtq+ community, a move that he’s still ashamed of to this day because even now, in his early thirties, he struggles with revealing his own sexual identity to people and justifies it by insisting he doesn’t want to be defined by his sexuality.

suffice it to say, alfie has made a name for himself as The Man Who Just Won’t Shut Up - paraphrased, of course. he’s never had a problem with speaking his mind, even if it did mean potentially hurting someone’s feelings. truth is, he doesn’t go out of his way to offend anyone, it’s more of a...distinct inability to filter himself when he feels particularly passionate about something. and he feels particularly passionate about a lot of things.

it’s no surprise that he picked investigative journalism as a career. he needed to be heard and, although he loathe to have the influence of a higher authority (aka, his editor in chief) controlling his work, it’s better than going relatively unheard on his blog.

ilyas hafez; 19/20; college student

ilyas came from a household that was pretty much the epitome of average; his father and mother met in college and started dating sometime during their senior year, and got married shortly afterwards. his father is an accountant and his mother decided to become a stay at home mom, valuing family over her career, although now she sells garments, that she knits and sews herself, online as a hobby.

although his family is considered middleclass, his father was always intent on insuring that ilyas and his sister knew how to appreciate what they had, making it absolutely clear that an allowance was a thing to be earned, teaching them the most important of the hafez values - kindness, selflessness, hard work, loyalty. they were all values that ilyas took to heart and still applies today.

growing up, he was never really the type who drew attention to himself. as a matter of fact, he preferred to be nothing more than a flower on the wall, just cruising through life on his skateboard, with the handful of friends he managed to collect over the years. he never really wanted to excel at much of anything in high school; his one true passion was music, and even then he always kept it to himself, unwilling to share it with anyone else. he taught himself how to play the guitar - thank god for youtube - and sing, but the only people privy to hearing it are his family and britta, his best friend. it’s not that he was shy, he just was not interested in the attention, and he definitely didn’t want to give high school kids an excuse to slap him with a label. 

popularity would never be something to interest him; he felt that being equally adored and hated by the school population was way too much pressure; he’d rather remain anonymous, or known as that one guy who sits behind me in spanish with the foreign sounding name, whatshisface, elijah or something. 

the only activity that rivaled ilyas’ love for music was, shockingly enough, sports. although he never tried out for any of the teams in high school (re: lack of interest in being labeled and popular), gym  was definitely his second favourite class after music. when college rolled around, ilyas found himself trying out for the basketball team on a whim, now reassured that university students were less likely to stick him in a box simply based on one of his interests. the last thing he had expected was to make the team; moreover, he hadn’t expected to take the place of someone whom had been deemed a shoe-in before ilyas had shown up, inadvertently making an enemy.

quite suddenly, ilyas was no longer the strangely friendly, and yet incredibly quiet, guy who skulked around campus with his equally weird, nerdy friend; he was a basketball player and he had a rival and he was exotic and he had suddenly, accidentally, garnered the attention of people who may not have looked at him twice before he stepped out onto that court. it was a pretty overwhelming shift in his social life, and, months later, ilyas is still struggling to reconcile his old life with his new one, because the last thing he wants to do is lose sight of himself while he enters this new, bizarre chapter of his life.
