It’s somewhere in the middle of all that that Calder notices it.  Every once in a while, when Calder gets close, Callie will reach for him, and then catch herself-- pulling her hand back instead. And every time, Calder catches Sol watching, his expression twisting into conflicted sadness.  -- (After being rescued from the helm, Calder realizes that he, Callie, and Sol need to have a heart to heart about their fears)

When you live on the run, no two meals are the same. Zirk grows up knowing dinner as the only certain meal of the day-- sometimes they have to skip town too early for breakfast, sometimes they don’t have time to stop for lunch. -- (Zirk's life and relationship to home, through the lens of food.)

“Miss Fia,” an insistent voice rouses Fia in her sleep, “wake up.”

Fia doesn’t feel like waking up yet, so she’s content to ignore the voice, but then she’s being repeatedly – and quite rudely – poked into her cheek and forehead with a rather pointy edge. She sits up in her bedding, batting Bukvar away with her hand as she levels him with her best approximation of a stormy glare. “What’s going on?” she hisses, still groggy. “I’m a growing girl child, Bukvar, I need my sleep.”

As he nervously flaps his pages and covers in front of her, Bukvar has the decency to at least look apologetic. “Sorry, Miss Fia, but it’s Batilda.” The mention of her witch serves to wake Fia up way more effectively than anything else has so far. “She’s acting… strange.”
