Broken Solitude

She hated being alone and during Rowan’s trips, meaning she often stayed longer at work or school to avoid being alone in their apartment longer than necessary. Having peace while in solitude was an impossible feat for Georgina but lately… lately, she was craving it. For the first time ever in her life, she feigned being sick so she could go home early and just be. She was more than ready for the lecture she’d likely receive from her husband who was insisting on escorting her everywhere she went, but she just wanted to experience some solitude for once.

Even Gideon had noticed that she had been acting differently, more reserved than was customary for her to be. How could she explain to anyone how she felt more lonely now than she ever had before? And the one thing she wanted to tell Rowan, she discovered that she was keeping it to herself with each passing day. 

Up high in the loft that she had converted into a study area, she sat in an oversized white sheepskin covered bean bag chair, scribbling words along a page in her journal. Three knocks came from the door, sundering the quiet atmosphere in two and Georgina could have sworn that her heart stopped. The threat her father-in-law had made hadn’t been forgotten and now she questioned if he was going to make good on it. She didn’t move and just stared at the door, becoming convinced that if she didn’t move, didn’t answer then he would go away. Knock, knock, knock. The series of knocks sounded a little more insistent this time and she heard her name being called by a feminine voice from the other side. She stood up to descend the narrow spiral steps that connected to the main level, feeling every heartbeat up in her throat as if she were walking to the gallows with her life on the line. Did she really want to open the door? She didn’t feel like she had a choice and she knew the curiosity of who it could be would eat at her if she didn’t.

She slowly opened the door and felt the air get sucked out her lungs with a gasp. More than seven months had passed since she last saw the raven-haired beauty standing in front of her. Her hair was neatly combed half up and her skin had a healthier glow than Georgina could ever remember seeing it. “Nadia,” she breathed, remembering all too vividly how she had banished her own sister and the regret that followed her afterward. 

Bright hazel eyes that mirrored Georgina’s watered along the lash line as she took in the sight of her baby sister. Nadia stepped forward and pulled her little sister in for a hug. “Sunshine.”
