SAINT OF THE DAY (July 25)

James, the brother of John the Evangelist, was the first Apostle to be martyred. He was beheaded by order of Herod of Agrippa.

The Gospels tell us that the two brothers left their father, Zebedee, and followed Jesus as soon as He called out to them.

James was one of the three Apostles who were particularly close to the Lord.

He was there with the Lord and his brother John and Peter at the Transfiguration, and in the Garden of Gethsemane.

He is known as "James the Greater" to distinguish him from the other Apostle by the same name.

The title has little to do with his function or the people's regard for him. Rather, it was a term indicating that he was the elder of the two.

He is the patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims.

In northwestern Spain, he is venerated at Santiago de Compostela, a medieval pilgrimage site that is still very popular today.

Good Morning!☀

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalms 34:4

In Psalms 34, David tells of God's responses to his cry. While there are things God does for us without our asking, there are times we are to seek the Lord for what we need. Listen to these words:

This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. Psalms 34:6

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. Psalms 34:17

Throughout Psalms 34, David affirms God both hearing and responding not only to his cries but the cries of the righteous everywhere. When we humble ourselves before God and call on him, he will answer; he will deliver!

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Psalms 23:5

David had endured many days on the run from King Saul and on the battlefield as king himself. He saw God take him from being shepherd over a few of his father's sheep to shepherd over Israel. He knew what it was like to have little with no home of his own, to have enemies seeking to destroy him.

As he reflects on God's shepherding over him, he could point to all that God had done for him as his Good Shepherd. No longer was he on the run. No longer did he have to do without. In fact, he could now feast even in his enemies presence. No longer did he have so little he had to ask others for food or drink. He had more than enough, an overflowing cup.

When we submit to God as our shepherd and trust him without doubt, our cup can overflow just like David's!

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Psalms 23:6

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. So begins one of the most well known psalms. What we may not be aware of is that everything that follows after that verse flows out of that verse. In expressing how God was a shepherd to him, David gives us a view of the work and care of a good shepherd. He speaks to the things we are still seeking today: food, water, renewal, spiritual wholeness, and safety.

As long as we allow God to be our shepherd and walk in his ways, we, too, can enjoy the care and abundance he provides. We, like David, can expect goodness and mercy to be our constant companions in this life, and forever abiding with our God in the next!
