Do-May-Stic Day 29. The next step (Makoto Tachibana x reader)!
Entry no. 29! I've been in love with Makoto since I was a teenager and I needed to write a prompt with him. Let a girl dream of marriage with him! @domaystic
CW- Proposal nerves, older!Makoto (imagine he's mid 20's), fluff
Word count- 220
Haru glanced at his best friend, cool glacier eyes watching him. Makoto kept fidgeting with his shirt sleeve. His attention was transfixed on the scene before him. You were laughing and looking through the market stalls with Nagisa and Rei. It was your annual reunion with the Iwatobi swim club. Your boyfriend always loved when you came with him and the other swimming team members adored you! But this one was… Going to be different.
“You know you don’t have to, right?” Haru said bluntly. Makoto’s emerald eyes glanced over.
“W-What was that, Haru?”
“You don’t have to go through with it.”
“I know but… If not now, when?” Makoto asked. He slumped in the outdoor cafe seat, his head hitting the wall behind him.
“When you’re home? I don’t get the big deal about pr-” Haru got interrupted by Makoto’s sudden shushing. “What if she hears you?!” Makoto whispered in a panicked tone.
“She’s over there, she’s not gonna hear you.”
Makoto looked back, watching you admire a handmade vase with the curiosity and excitement on his face that he fell for years ago. He felt around in his backpack. When his fingers brushed the box that contained the engagement ring you thought was beautiful last time you came browsing with him.
The next step was only moments away.

Magic exists to make people happy.
Send me an event you think happens in the story of Cú Chulainn's death, and I'll tell you whether it's on Oidheadh Con Culainn (15th century) or Brislech Mór Maige Muirthemne (~9th?? century). Or neither.
The Morrígan tricking him into eating dog meat!
Sort of neither. There is a dog meat incident in both texts; the Morrígan isn't involved, and Cú Chulainn doesn't actually eat it.
In BMMM (§11 in Kimpton's ed.), Cú Chulainn comes across three witches (origins unspecified) cooking a dog. A geis prevents Cú Chulainn from not going towards a cooking fire like this, but also prevents him from eating dog meat. One of the witches (identify unspecified) shames him into joining them and passes him some of the meat. He takes it and places it next to his leg; the hand and leg that touched it are weakened.
In OCC (§30 in Van Hamel's ed.), Cú Chulainn comes across the daughters of Cailitín, among them Badb ingen Cailitín (not to be confused with the other Badb, but it's so easy to do so), cooking dog meat. He turns the chariot away to avoid them, so Badb ingen Cailitín takes the cooking spit and yeets it directly at Cú Chulainn. Cú Chulainn catches it and raises it above his head to throw it back, but as he does so, a drop of blood drips from it onto him. This blood, we're told, is 'poisonous'. He then throws it back and impales Badb with it (wounding, not killing her).
In both texts they are using spits made of rowan wood. Rowan often shows up in conjunction with magic in medieval Irish texts (e.g. in Tochmarc Étaíne it's rowan wood that Étaín is struck with to transform her) so I assume that's presented to flag that it's a supernatural situation, but I have no particular source for that assumption.
BMMM explicitly sets this situation up as a matter of trying not to break one geis and being forced to sort of break another one; OCC doesn't actually use the word geis at any point in this section or say that he's forbidden to have anything to do with dog meat, that's merely presented as an Ominous Detail and it's the 'poisonous' nature of the blood that's the issue. It may be poisonous because of a geis, but since this text usually doesn't hesitate to mention them and there are a bunch more of them than there are in BMMM, it's slightly surprising that it doesn't say that here!
For a detail that shows up in every retelling ever, it's surprising how differently this scene actually goes down in the text.
[Caveat with all of these asks is that I am basing my answers on the manuscripts of OCC edited by Van Hamel and so anything to do with names and terminology is specific to those manuscripts. There are a lot of manuscripts of OCC and it's possible some use slightly different phrasing or names.]
Was the action of Cú eating the offered dog meat added to later retellings?
That's interesting that he has an aversion to even handling dog meat/corpses. (Reminds me slightly of the Nazarite vow to not handle dead bodies.)
Are there any academic studies or literature on why Cú has this specific geis? (My guess is it's a form of secondhand/spiritual cannibalism linked to the killing of Smithy Culann's dog and Cú inheriting the spiritual role of said dog by taking up its job + its name/title, but i wanna know what the scholars say.
Actually, how do geis even work? They seem to be magical compulsions that weaken you/kill you/bring bad luck if broken, but other times they function like Nazarite vows: obey your geis and you'll earn boons like superhuman strength or incredible luck.
Is there any consensus on how many geis Cú Chulainn has? Popular understanding says 2 (do not eat dog meat, do not walk past a cooking fire without socializing) but there's arguably a total of 4. The Pursuit of Gruaidh Ghriansholus specifies needing to fight at least one soldier/never letting an enemy escape uninjured (which i think was in The Taín), and recontextualizes Cú's whole "cannot look at naked women" shtick as a geis that weakens him. (Considering Cú cannot control his strength and broke his partner's hand the first time he had sex, it makes sense.)
