Quick Tips for Writing Interesting Villains
Give them relationships with other characters. Being a villain doesn’t mean they’re isolated
Give them their own set of morals
Give them something to care about
Consider the reasons why they want to hurt the protagonist
Remember that they are human
Don’t make them evil for the sake of being evil
Keep in mind that a villain doesn’t have to do every horrible thing imaginable
Not every villain was abused. Someone who was spoiled is just as, if not more, likely to lack empathy than someone who was abused
Consider how they rationalize their behavior (blame their victims, make excuses, believe that what they’re doing is right) if you need a reference for this kind of behavior, look at how Trump defends the horrible things he does
Give them a life outside of being a villain. Maybe your protagonist is going shopping and they run into their villain and the villain isn’t interested or up for a fight that day. This really depends on the story, though
Give them a past, present, or future relationship with the protagonist. Again, this depends on the story
Consider making your villain likable
Give the reader a reason to sympathize with them
The best villains are the heroes of another story.

Showing vs. Telling
– At long last, it is finally here; The long awaited guide to showing instead of telling. This is obviously a very divisive subject in the writing community, so if there’s something you disagree with, that’s totally fine. These are simply my tips based on my own experience and you can take or leave whatever is useful to you. I hope this is helpful. Happy writing!
Ko-Fi || Masterlist || Work In Progress || Request
Don’t Be Ambiguous
It is important to note that showing is mainly about conveying exactly what you mean to your reader. Telling is so dangerous in writing because it’s very easy for readers to interpret information that is told to them in a way that throws off any one of the elements of your scene. The best way to catch these instances of telling is to identify moments in which a reader could ask “what do they mean?”
Take those moments, for instance, if you were to write, “the woman was pretty”, and clarify what pretty is in the context of your story, or your perspective as the author. People have different definitions and associations to words, and your job, when it comes to showing, is to make your definitions and associations as clear as possible.
Use Strong Verbs
Showing does not mean telling in a more roundabout way. It means taking a bland description without any imagery and rewriting it in a way that paints a picture in your reader’s mind. You do this by using strong verbs and powerful words. For instance, instead of saying “hit, looked, walked”, you’d say “struck, peered, trudged”. See what I mean?
Balance
As a writer, you need to understand that there are no hard rules. There must be balance to everything, and despite how universal this “rule” may seem, you should know that it’s not that black and white. Here are two tips to help you keep balance between showing and telling.
Don’t overwhelm your reader with information that is unnecessary. If your reader can continue without knowing a detail, don’t include it, and don’t justify keeping it to yourself because you want to bulk up the word count or sound fancy.
When you’re telling, be brief about it and make sure that the inclusion of the detail is imperative to your reader advancing in the story.
Showing Through Dialogue
Dialogue is a really great way to show a reader character traits that showing through description never could. The way a person speaks, the words they choose, the manner in which they respond to things, are all great ways to give your reader information about that character. Use this to your advantage so that you don’t have to spend extra time describing it later.
When You Should “Tell”
When the number of words it would take to show instead of tell a piece of information isn’t worth your reader’s time
When you’re essentially repeating information the reader already knows. In this case, you’d say “so-and-so explained what she had said” instead of reiterating what she said and reaching a point where your writing is redundant.
When you want the reader to form their own emotions around the events in a scene, rather than planting them in their mind. Telling allows for the reader to have some emotional freedom, but this should come in little bits. Approach this excuse to tell with caution.

Tips On Writing Fight Scenes
– I decided to finally make a list of tips on writing fight scenes for all of you who come to me with questions. I am definitely not an expert, though, so I’ve included another resource at the bottom that you can visit if you have further questions. Happy writing!
Ko-Fi || Masterlist || Work In Progress || Request
Don’t Write Meaningless Action Scenes
Your story isn’t a movie. Time shouldn’t be taken up by action that doesn’t have a purpose. Your fight scene should resolve some form of conflict or have some function other than pure entertainment. Action scenes in books don’t have the visual factor, so you need to fill that gap with emotion and significance to the plot.
Reveal Characterization
Fight scenes are a fantastic way to add depth to your characters. Real, genuine emotions and traits come out when a person is in an intense situation, and fight scenes are definitely intense for characters. The way your character feels and reacts during a fight, as well as what is going through their head, are great details to display to your reader in order to make their personalities more three-dimensional.
Emotion Emotion Emotion
Fight scenes in books are about emotions. Emotional significance, emotional reactions, and emotional consequences. Fear, uncertainty, desperation, pain, suspense, stress, etc. are all emotions your character will endure and you should make these visible to your reader or the scene will bore them.
Do Your Research
Know where the suspension of disbelief ends. It’s important to know details like “If you jump off a building and land on your feet, your chicken legs will shatter, so your character, being a smarty pants, will know to tuck and roll.”
There’s no better way to explain this than to just say that if you have a question, any question at all, ask it. Find a reliable source, use your common sense, and try to write as accurately as you can.
Avoid Cliche’s and Conveniences
Simply, avoid the tropes that make your readers roll their eyes. Such as a completely inexperienced kid suddenly being able to take on 3 all powerful beings and leaving the battle without a scratch. Also, please make sure that your characters that are very skilled in combat have established limits and weaknesses. It doesn’t matter how talented you are with a sword, it is not possible, or at least very very difficult to take on a whole army of dead soldiers. Just keep that line between impressive and impossible in mind.
Create Some Actual Stakes
There are a lot of fight scenes out there that have little to no actual suspense because there’s nothing at risk. Yeah, maybe someone might get hurt or a castle will be lost, but there’s no bigger picture there or significant emotional loss to be experienced. If your characters are going to put their lives at risk to fight a battle they’ll likely lose, then there must be a really freaking good reason, and that needs to be clear to the reader. Context and connection will make the scene more intense for the reader, and that is key.
Use Your Fancy Writer Skills
Fight scenes are a really great opportunity to show off your technical skills as a writer, as they rely a lot on pacing, word choice, and description. You get to work with varying sentence structure, fancy words you don’t usually have the occasion to use, and descriptions that include more than one sense in a single sentence.
Pacing
Sentence structure and choreography are an important part of fight scenes, because they convey a sense of place and realism to your reader’s experience. When it comes to sentence length, short, chopped sentences invoke suddenness, like quick actions that are happening in your story. Longer sentences, with more detail, slow it down and add for build up before another boom of action.
Word choice
Use powerful words to accompany your powerful scene. Slice, shatter, pound, strike, crush, attack, escape, etc. These are all powerful words that will evoke more imagery in your reader’s mental depiction of the scene. Additionally, avoid adverbs at all cost. This is an occasion where you simply can’t afford them.
Sensory Description
Work mostly with details that trigger the reader’s 5 senses. What the character smells, hears, sees, feels, and tastes. A lot of people feel this is difficult to do in such a fast paced scene type, but you can be dynamic with it by saying things like “The copper taste on his tongue and the blaring sirens in the distance didn’t phase him as he continued strike the man’s already bruised face”.

The order of and the days of the week are:
Firesday –> Earthsday –> Watersday –> Windsday –> Iceday –> Lightningday –> Lightsday –> Darksday
They also refer to years as seasons. Yda said something along the lines of ‘When I was twelve summers old.’ or something.
all this, seriously helpful. <3 Thank you so much.
The Twin Adder Rally!
Though they were lacking the generous donations of the Sultanate, or the lavish generosity of Ishgardian and Doman nobles, the Order of the Twin Adders would not be denied! Barrels of mead were rolled in from Mun-Tay and a clever Serpent Private hussled a pair of passing Moogles to facilitate entertainment. Poetry games and foot race followed, as well as an inspiring speech from Serpent Lieutenant Vherin’to Levanh!
