âoh, thank you!â amara gave the other girl a grateful smile, grabbing the chain and fastening it back around her neck, âi would haveâ-i donât know what i would have done if iâd lost this, soâare you headed to dinner, too?â
â donât worry about it, I know what that kind of stuff means to people. -- uh, yeah, I was just kind of taking my time, trying to explore a little bit, yâknow? â
âoh!â rowan grabbed the vial, looking up at nailah sheepishly, âthank youâitâs just something iâve been tinkering with, but it wouldâve been terrible to have to start from scratch.â
â -- yâknow, not many people pack around vials of stuff. what is it? â
âAh, thanks.â Gage took the organizer that was in her hands. âIâd be totally lost without this. Would have no idea what I was supposed to do with myself at any given time.âÂ
â no problem. -- thatâs a pretty hefty planner so I could see how youâd just be lost without it, busy guy. âÂ
isa partly shielded her face with her hand and squinted up at the sun, unable to stare for too long. âugh, iâll never figure that out. besides, when you have beautiful inventions like watches and smartphones, why make things harder for yourself??â
â well, what if you donât have either of those things, then what are you going to do? -- I mean, it comes in handy once you get the hang of it. âÂ

how does one handle living with a foot in two different worlds? on one hand Nailah inherited her motherâs gifts, magic passed through blood over centuries, and on the other she was given her fatherâs kindess and, well, maybe his eyes. -- to straddle such a fence was often tiring, but she took a page from her motherâs book and took it all in stride, taking each day a step at a time until she was able to leave for school. she often worried that their move from Southern Africa to Egypt would count her out of the one school she wanted to attend, but one faithful night she got her dream awaking the next morning with a stone clutched in hand. her father, who had never truly understood the magical way being a muggle, was indifferent to her schooling, but her mother, oh god her mother, was so proud. she could only imagine the swell of her heart upon seeing the stone, one so similar to the one she kept locked away in her jewelry box. Nailah could equate arriving at the school to being thrown into the deep end of a pool and not knowing how to swim, for years her main focus had been just being a normal girl and now here she was expected to be a great witch. -- it took time and patience ( a gift sheâd also taken from her father ) and over the years sheâd grasped the gift of divination ( mainly through tasseomancy ) as well as self - transfiguration, her animagus being that of a serval cat.
âAlthough Africa has a number of smaller wizarding schools (for advice on locating these, see introductory paragraph), there is only one that has stood the test of time (at least a thousand years) and achieved an enviable international reputation: Uagadou. The largest of all wizarding schools, it welcomes students from all over the enormous continent. The only address ever given is âMountains of the Moonâ; visitors speak of a stunning edifice carved out of the mountainside and shrouded in mist, so that it sometimes appears simply to float in mid-air. Much (some would say all) magic originated in Africa, and Uagadou graduates are especially well versed in Astronomy, Alchemy and Self-Transfiguration.â
