ok first off yours verse is genuinely one of my fav things on ao3 ever like it is. amazing. second. have you ever considered writing them in a free use kinda situation because i think it would be so so interesting to write as well because the amount of embarrassment max would have no batter who brings it up and just the whole. Vibes. yeah.
The free use doc is more than 2 years old, I promise it already exists, and it's been haunting me too...
Yeah I mean, I mess with the doc a little all the time, but there's quite a lot you can do with free use, I just have to decide what exactly results it the blushiest Max and the most feral Charles, I've just been indecisive and having fun just messing around with ideas
I mean, would Charles ever be the one to actually bring it up first? Probably not, he's so safe sane and consensual, it borders on annoying some days, but like.. would MAX bring it up? Sure. Under pain of death.
Idk, I'm sure Max would break eventually after one too many times of Charles almost just doing it, but then he doesn't because he needs to ask and check and always fuck around with enough foreplay to actually see Max get desperate for it, which is like great, wonderful, I absolutely get it, but also, like, sometimes... He could just do it...
I'm sure Max thinks he can probably just sort of mention it and that's that, Charles will probably get it and do it and leave Max out of it, right?
Wrong. Now imagine Max having to explain this to him like:
"What do you mean I should just do it without asking, that's not how consent works. What do you mean you would just 'say no if you didn't actually want it' that's not how consent works. What do you mean you want me to not do foreplay you don't like foreplay anymore???"
He would be saying all of this while actively being unbelievably horny about the concept, but he would need so much cognitive reframing for a minute to actually reconcile this idea with his need for consent and Max would be dying the whole time wishing he'd honestly just kept his damn mouth shut
you don't have to answer this but going back to the beginning of yours-verse how long have max and charles liked each other? i mean i think max has liked charles for longer than he would care to admit or even acknowledge, and i think (though max was very oblivious at the beginning) it's clear that charles is already flirting with max from the start. is it that specific drunken reaction from max that lets charles be more bold? or was he already contemplating making a move but this just served as a catalyst? ooooooooh and also: how does the evolvement of their childhood/young adult rivalry tie into this universe? oh, and is there a universe where by some sequence of events max somehow makes the first move? because on the one hand he is so very down bad but also he's so shy, which i love him for (btw i LOVE all of ur fanfics sm 😭. the characterizations and plot and just emotions in general have rlly stuck with me in a way that few stories usually do)

You know, I'm not really sure, but I imagine Max has probably had a bit of a crush on Charles ever since they met as kids, and a lot of him terrorizing Charles on track was him not knowing what to do with his feelings, but he's always been a sweetheart though, even when they were fighting he still tended to still give Charles compliments largely without noticing because it's just the truth, you know. But I do think a lot of him pissing Charles off on purpose would have been just a boy teasing his crush. He definitely convinced himself he hated Charles a lot more than he actually did.
I think Charles actually did hate him for a while for real ngl, (Read: Austria 2019), but also like fair enough, right? I think he would have started out with like begrudging competitive respect as kids, then absolutely could not stand Max around Austria times, and then probably had some sort of mixed feelings awakening when he figured out that the reason Max is the only one who ever pissed him off this bad is probably because Charles sort of thinks it's cute and maybe he really wants to do something about it...
Charles probably went through his stages of grief about that and found acceptance by himself pretty fast and just decided, oh well, Max probably wouldn't be interested, but they can be friends. And then he got like ONE hint of Max actually possibly being interested and was like OH yay, this one's mine now🥰 and took him home hissing and scratching like white ladies adopt wild animals with full confidence that they'll just make it work. Which he did, so, fair I guess.
Max has definitely been in the denial phase of his feelings for most of his life, and sure, he has technically processed and accepted it now through the events of the original yours fic, but he's just so used to being in denial that acting like that is just the default to him, it's just who he is
In this universe, I don't think there was ever any chance whatsoever of Max making the first move, to be honest, because first of all there's no way he ever actively put all the puzzle pieces together by himself. He knows he's sort of friends with Charles and he does kind of like his personality, sure. He knows he respects him and thinks he's a great driver, sure. He also knows he's objectively hot. These are all facts that exist separately to him and he refuses to consider that they don't until he's forced to. Also at the start of Yours, Max has definitely not considered that sex with Charles is a possibility at all, much less realised and accepted that he might get to play the submissive part in it and that that's what he wants, but if he had realised that he would definitely sooner have driven himself face first into the wall than ever made a move about it.
I think in any other universes he might have made the first move, if he had mildly different characterisation, like, he might have to be less shy, or he might have to be more desperate initially, or he would have needed more introspection, or they would have just needed to be in a different situation.
I mean there's so many fanfictions out there with characterisations that I love that have Max making the first move, but if I had to write one I suppose it might be something like sub top Max, or total enemies to lovers heat of the moment stuff, or a complete alternate universe where they're characterised a bit differently, but I mean, yeah, you never know!

Like during the time when they were very determinedly making the ropes NOT a sex thing. Also, just Max in general when him and Charles are discussing (or starting new) anything related to their sex life, because of how embarrassed he gets. Ok sorry this probably does not make that much sense to literally anyone else but it did make me laugh and I really needed to tell someone about it!

it's extremely funny that charles leclerc, an ostensibly normal guy, just nickname mogs everyone on the grid without even trying. like il predestinato, now that's objectively a top 5 of all time nickname. lord percival is a bit medieval but otherwise makes him sound very magnanimous which he is. and then out of nowhere max pulls out the red rocket. the spirit of shakespeare really possesed max in those 5 seconds it took for him to come up with that. and charles now has yet another absolute banger of a nickname which is insane to tack on onto two already very good, very aura farm-y nicknames. the red rocket, the lord, il predestinato, charles leclerc.
