jellal fernandes is from a noble or rich family for sure and here’s why:
for some reason, anyone else who has magic related to stars or the heavens is depicted to be from a super prestigious family,
Lucy Heartfilia - Celestial Magic - From a super rich family and even had ties to the royal family as Hisui mentions that she knew her father
Yukino Agria - Celestial Magic - Now while I don’t know for sure, in her flashback of her sister, Yukino had a dress on similar to what we see Lucy as a child wear and the background of the flashback has a mansion-type place too, so we can assume that she was well-off at least before the whole R System thing happened
Sorano Agria/Angel - Celestial Magic AND Angel Summoning Magic - Now we know that Sorano is Yukino’s sister and so we can assume that she’s from the same household but what’s interesting is that she can also use the Angel Summoning Magic that is, again, directly related to the heavens and stuff
Hisui Fiore/ Princess Fiore - Celestial Magic - She’s literally the princess of all of Fiore so she’s really well off but when it was revealed that she was a Celestial mage, it cemented the fact that only the noble and/or rich families had mages that were related to the stars and things like that
Ok so before we talk about Jellal, I also want to talk about backgrounds real quick:
Lucy’s home and name were all based off of a French style and while the name “Heartfilia” is definitely made up having a literal meaning of “child of the heart” in Latin/English, the style of her mansion and the blonde hair characteristic, as well as Lucy’s early lifestyle with a maid attending her and the usage of things like carriages (seen in Memory Days OVA)
Agria is actually Spanish for tart/sour and has Latin roots connecting to wine or grapes which makes me think that Yukino and Sorano’s family could be from a wine-making or vineyard business.
Fiore is Italian for flower, which makes sense given it’s the name of the country whose cities are all flower names as well as the last name of the Royal family.
All of these names/styles are all European rather than English which is definitely a significant marker considering many of the last names of the characters we know are all based in English or are pure fantasy names(i.e. Fullbuster, Scarlet/Belserion, Dragneel, Redfox, McGarden) rather than based on any other language or style.
Now for Jellal, we know for sure that his last name is Fernandes which he tells Erza when they’re much younger without any hesitation. The name ‘Fernandes’ is from Spanish descent, so we already know that Jellal’s last name was not based in English and also the fact that we never get to hear about his past and some assuming that he had always been an orphan.
Jellal being an orphan is actually a pretty likely assumption considering that if he had been born into a rich or noble family because, scars or birthmarks such as the one Jellal sports can easily be seen as a sign of evil or a mistake and be abandoned. He also uses Heavenly Body Magic which is directly related to astronomy and, you guessed it, the heavens and stars.
I don’t know where I was going with this but, Jellal is secretly from a noble line but has no idea probably.
