Hey i was wondering what does first/second generation mean,i saw you used it to describe yourself and the ghost guy

First generation is a way to describe a child born in the US, who is born to immigrant parents.

So for Andrew, his father and mother were born in Russia and Ukraine respectively. However Andrew was born in Chicago, making him part of the first generation in his family to live in the US.

(no I didn’t plan that around the war, I did it because I used to be friends with people who were adopted from Russia and Ukraine)

Second generation is what you call someone who is the child of first generation immigrants. Both my parents were born in the US and so was I, but both sets of my grandparents were born and raised in Mexico.

It’s strange for me because my mom had a mostly American childhood (my grandfather forced her and her siblings to be as American as possible) and my dad had a… semi Mexican childhood? (My grandma was a control freak and just kind weird).

So with that and my brother’s speech delay (forcing us to only speak one language in the house)… I didn’t grow up being part of a Mexican community compared to others around me. I still have Mexican American experiences but only recently have I been able to start to learn how to be part of a community outside of my family
