made some more progress through ai the somnium files, putting my thoughts and theories here so i can come back after the playthrough
i'm at the part where date went to the yakuza den. my current theory about the general plot and culprit is that date was the culprit of the original cyclops murders, and he was caught by the government and basically subjected to having aiba inserted into his eye.
maybe the government thought that someone who managed to evade capture for so long would be a good detective? that would also explain why aiba constantly mentions his "dosages" (which I think are done to make sure he keeps relatively calm and doesn't revert into the person he was when committing those murders) and also why he doesn't remember anything before 6 years ago
maybe the culprit of the new cyclops murders is someone who is trying to get revenge on date for the original murders? that would explain why date's friends keep getting killed in ways that mirror (but don't mimic) the original murders. i'm guessing next they're going to target mizuki, which sure is scary lol, but i believe in date's ability to get out of this
obviously this is all just me guessing but i think it would make for a great story! i will be a little sad if this isn't what ends up happening
for general thoughts: i keep comparing this game to ace attorney because its premise seemed sort of similar, but it's different in a lot of great ways. first of all...it's extremely dark, which really hit me when i saw renju's corpse hung up like a fish lmaooo
also date and mizuki both have very strong personalities, i think one thing this game does well is that it doesn't try to make any character especially likeable. date is a great protagonist but he is def flawed, mizuki is very bratty at times which i find so endearing, etc...
im not sure i really enjoy the game mechanics that much, they seem overtly complicated for the experience they're trying to convey. the concept of somnium is cool though, maybe it's just a steep learning curve. mostly i just enjoy the investigating parts, it's like watching a really good movie
so excited to keep playing!!
more spoilery thoughts
I THINK IM RIGHT?? i just finished iris's somnium, it did show date as the killer but i feel like boss and pewter are gaslighting date lmaooo
even date himself is like "uhhh did i do it??" lol so i think he is the original cyclops killer
i think iris witnessed him do all of it, but also got her memories erased somehow
i'm also confused because there's a flowchart and i can see that i'm only on one branch of the story. does that mean there are different endings? im literally playing this blind so idk but if so that is really interesting, i'll def play through everything
also ota just tased date so something is obviously up with him and iris...i don't think they're the new cyclops killers but i do think iris has some relation to the new killer
more spoilers...im losing my mind
this game is making me insane lol like 2 min after i booted up the game again, i saw iris get cut in half with a chainsaw thing??? i truly thought she would survive the game
anyway i guess date isn't the original murderer because i met #89, although i'm not sure how he committed the original cyclops murders yet. but surely date is related to the case somehow?? i feel like this game is one step ahead of me.
also i think boss is going to get murdered too, given that apparently every single young woman in this game dies lmaooo
i thought i had an idea of what's going on but actually i don't have any idea and i think i'll just play the game
ok so i finished ota's route, i think i'm getting the hang of this game and i have thoughts
date truly is the dad who stepped up LOL the flashback with him talking to both of mizuki's parents was so sad, but his bond with mizuki is really sweet even if he's a little awkward
ota's route was really touching too, although it tells me nothing about the actual plot or mystery other than the fact that renju ate shoko's eye??? that was pretty disturbing
but i still have no answers about why boss killed so sejima (which i learned via another route that ended with date not being able to solve the case). also i managed to save iris and ota's life after going back in the flowchart, which makes me wonder if i could save renju's life too? i'm filling out the left side of the flowchart so idk anything that happens on the right side
this game is genuinely so engaging, i'm having a great time and i've resigned myself to not knowing anything lol
UPDATE i finished mizuki's route!! for now i consider this the closest thing to a canon ending...it was so sweet. and i guess i know the culprit now? however now i'm suffering through the iris route (basically choosing a diff route in mizuki's first psync) and i like it a lot less :( i have a high tolerance for anime bullshit but i still don't enjoy the pseudo romance between date and iris especially since she's a high schooler
also mizuki being neglected in this route makes me sad :(
spoilery thoughts under cut
i finished iris's route! i will save spoilery thoughts for under the cut but the ending was pretty unexpected especially because i thought i made the right choices in her somnium...
also. PEWTER. I KNEW IT I SWEAR I CALLED IT
i think i have only one route left!!
i usually don't talk so much BUT THIS GAME IS MAKING ME LOSE IT
what do you mean people can swap bodies in psyncs???? also iris's corpse is actually manaka? who i'm guessing is iris's birth mom, and hitomi adopted iris after manaka's death
i'm more interested in what this means for date's backstory though. because i remember in someone's somnium i saw date murder people. so i'm guessing date's body originally had the original cyclops killer's brain in it, and vice versa. 6 years ago i guess there was a psync that swapped their bodies, maybe on purpose?
does that mean date's brain originally belonged to #89? however I'm still confused because I'm not sure about why date is missing an eye if he's the killer.
i dont know anything </3 this was such a big lore drop lmao
i finished the last route before unlocking more of the story
