In some parts of the world, school can be a hard-won luxury. Many children throughout the world have to take the most incredible and unimaginable routes in order to receive the education that some of us may take for granted. This list we collected will show you just how determined some children can be when it comes to getting an education.
Wow! The journey to a better education is not always so easy. Though the paths the EAC children take to go to school aren’t as dangerous, am super thankful for the EAC Jeepney which safely and faithfully picks up the children every morning and takes them home at the end of the school day. Even more thankful that the EAC Fundraiser at Divine raised enough money to buy new tires for the Jeepney!
Amazing (and upsetting) to see the barriers to education that children face all over the world. Unlike many of her peers, 9-year-old Brundha attends fourth grade in a small village in India. She wasn’t always so fortunate.
Brundha’s father is bedridden with tuberculosis; her mother supports the familiy through daily labor. When times got too tough, Brundha’s father pulled her out of school to do domestic work in another city. It wasn’t until she was discovered by Nanhi Kali, a female youth empowerment organization, that the girl was able to return to her studies.
I’ve been reading about so many girls around the world without the opportunities that we take for granted here in the states. Girls, especially poor ones, aren’t valued in many rural societies. They generally aren’t taken to get checked when they’re sick. Getting an education is rare. Many are raped and forced into prostitution. Some who get pregnant at a young age tend to develop fistulas which leave them leaking urine and feces, rejected by their families.
I could go on… But here’s a chance to change all that and give a girl hope for a better future. You can provide a uniform, shoes, books, and school supplies for one girl for a whole year for only $65. Sixty-five dollars! That’s less than $5.50 a month.
