Nan had invited her brother over for a good old fashioned cereal hang out. It was something she was nostalgic for pretty consistently and eating a bowl of cereal with her brother reminded her of mornings before school. And sometimes you just needed that and little TV for background noise more than anything else. Her Frosted Flakes were a perfect amount of still crunchy but soaked with the milk but her stomach was a little bit in knots over what she needed to talk to Francis about. "I feel like I could live a good life off of Frosted Flakes alone. Speaking of flakes...Frank somehow found my number and texted me. Do you need more cereal?"

Leah had been out and about, having dinner with people she hoped would be able to help with what was going on. To no avail. What a wasteful evening. The frustration must have been evident on her face, only melting away when she spotted her more than exhausted appearing daughter. If that was the case, she could not fault her.

"Just barely past eight." It was, for an evening, still on the earlier side. "I was hoping to find out some more about what's going on. No luck." She softened, voice growing steadier as she made her way over. "Have you had dinner? Sorry, it's a habit." It had become a habit with quite a few people it seemed. ❧ @nanxschaefer

"You would think as deputy mayor you'd kinda be told that type of stuff." Nan said feel like that was weird that they weren't telling her those things. She didn't know how it all worked, but she was pretty sure that you get to know like all the state secrets. It felt like even if Leah did tell her though, it would probably go in one ear and right out the other. Not because she didn't care, but mostly because the logistics of the job felt like an overwhelming amount of tasks. Her mom's question was a great one, had she eaten dinner? She was pretty sure the answer was no or at least she was still hungry if she had. "No, you're good. I think I just fell asleep I don't remember having dinner." She rubbed at her eyes a little as she sat up more and realized just how dark it was outside now.

"Seems like I missed out. Is it one of those uppity, champagne and blow dry bars? The ones with the lush couches and fucking oysters?" The female equivalent of Maddox's high-priced, barbershop with aged whiskey and his favorite beats on repeat. "Also, I've always had a thing for Nicole Kidman." Which makes the idea of Nan as a version of her all the more appealing. Funny, really, how he's begun seeing the other facets to her outside of the flower exchange that's spanned many years. Maddox pulls her in, a warm hug and a low chuckle. "You ever gonna let me live that down?" He's used to Nan looking pristine and safe. Not the type to be impacted by what he surrounds himself with; the violence shrouded in politics.

"I'm a prosecutor, Nan. Pretty sure catching them is part of the job." Which, unfortunately, means he feels the failure himself. Regardless, he nods, gives into the illusion that either of them are any good at looking after themselves. "Pact, then." He decides. "We'll both try, at least once, to do something for ourselves." Easier said than done, but Nan's creative and Maddox is reckless. The perfect combination to actually get it done.

"Uppity definitely not, but definitely a great one. Flair Salon. They're a spa too. My friend owns it. Her name is Gracie, well Grace Mitchell." Nan shared, not knowing if he had ever met her before. Her brows raised at his comment about having a thing for Nicole Kidman. "A man of impeccable taste. Maybe I'll have to buy a wig, test it out." She grinned at Maddox before he hugged her in return. She could feel his laugh through her and it made her relax a little more. "I will think about it, it's okay I feel like it was an understandable reaction." Nan knew she probably looked like a feral raccoon had scratched her up or something. But, nonetheless she felt like life had to keep moving so she wasn't going to hide what she looked like while her scrapes healed.

"Oh...yeah, I guess that makes sense. Sorry I don't watch Law and Order or SVU, I'm more of a medical procedural watcher." Nan shared as if that would help explain her reasoning for not knowing what his job description entailed. She paused to listen to Maddox's words and a grin spread across her face at the pact. "I like it...is this like a combined effort moment or like more of a self journey and then story time show and tell type of thing?" Not that she felt like there needed to be rules, but also she was curious to know what he might have in mind.

" has anyone ever told you that they call their grandmother , nan ? i used to --- doesn't really suit you. " a slight tangent on their current conversation but he thought it should be address since she had the name of an eighty year old. " if that's what you call a good cookie , then ye need some serious help. " though his tastes were a bit peculiar when it came to sweets , gracie was the real expert. he pointed at himself , " i could be a girl boss ? " he shook his head. " there's nothin' girlie about me. i was told i resembled a rat by too many girls growin' up to be considered anything like that. "We're fast talkers and fast walkers, but not all of us are wolves of Wall Street." She argued as she felt like the only competitive spirit she had was involved in being better at something than her siblings and the pride that came along with that. But that was very minimal. She blinked, unsure what to say in return to Ronan's commentary about her self proclaimed nickname was also a nickname for grandmothers. "My name doesn't suit me?" She squinted her eyes a bit trying to figure out if he was trying to insult her or not. "You know...someone could shorten your name to Nan too." The blonde pointed out to him before rolling her eyes at his twisting of her words. "I said it was a good cookie, not that it was the best cookie in the world, calm down." Wincing at the commentary on what girls what used to call him, he did have semi rat like features, she would keep that to herself though. He kinda looked like what she'd imagined Peter Pettigrew looked like. Not unattractive, but rat like features. "You know...you really like should...maybe work on your social skills. Threatening to steal toothbrushes from people is weird and that's coming from me."

Nan furrowed her brows at the question, "Almost 30...why?" She wasn't sure she wanted to know why, because more than likely another insult was coming her way since he had inadvertently complimented her. "You? Generous? To me? Yeah, I question that a lot." She said with full confidence, because he seemed to enjoy antagonizing her more than anything else. She made a face as he called her rotten and spoiled. "Um what? I am not either of those things? That's not me at all." Nan argued as she felt like she had no idea where he got that impression from her. Even though she grew up well off, she felt like she didn't really act like some of the people she went to school with who took things they had for granted and overindulged.

Charlie glanced between Nan and the bartender for a second, visibly trying to piece together how exactly this had become his problem before a laugh escaped him anyway. “I mean…” His attention shifted back toward her, still half curled up in the booth like she fully intended to spend the night there. “In his defense, this is a karaoke bar and not the Ritz.” The corner of his mouth twitched as he leaned against the edge of the booth. Truthfully, he still wasn’t entirely convinced she wasn’t joking. “You good?” He asked after a beat, the amusement in his voice easing slightly. “Or are you actually trying to sleep here?”

"Well you've got booths that belong in the Ritz they're that comfy." Nan argued back as she felt like at least that was a compliment that she was giving. She realized perhaps someone might think she was being odd, and Charlie looked a little like that right now. So she realized she might need to play this off a little more. "Oh, yeah, I mean I wasn't going to sleep sleep here. I just dozed off a little and now apparently I'm persona non grata with that guy." Nan let out a small scoff laugh and shake of her head. "Some of the songs tonight have been very soft is all, Simon and Garfunkel songs are just so soft."

Something visceral took over her reaction when my hair looked fried hit her ears. One that caused Alix to wince as though physically pained by the revelation. "Teenage Nan walked so adult Nan could soar." Parroted back with the raise of an index finger pointed in her direction. "Remind me to put that in my notes app." When her hands were freed, that was. She had a whole folder of things people said that she wanted to keep, for reminders or birthday speeches or whatever she used them for. God forbid a girl was sentimental. "You ever think about what life would've been like had we met earlier? I mean, you'd be so much better at sports, less fried hair." She could go on all day.

Nan laughed softly as Alix shared that she would be saving that quote, and gave a nod. "Absolutely, I will." She hoped the reason was good that she wanted to write it down. She snickered at the comment, although it had been always a dream of hers to have a sister, as much as she loved Francis and he indulged a majority of her thoughts it still had been a wish of hers to have an older sister. More than likely she probably did knowing Frank's reputation. "I would have loved knowing you when I was younger, and you're so right. I am uncoordinated because of Francis, I fear." There was no evidence, but she felt like she'd learned to be scrappy rather than coordinated.

Chanel knew that Nan was trying her hardest. And hell, she should have known that her words would set off alarm bells within the woman's mind. But that didn't make the thought any less loud in her mind. A good sister would have been there. Not just to save her from the fire, but to be there for her. And while she'd seen The Nines as more of a money pit than her family's legacy in recent years, she should have respected her desire to keep it running. Then again, it was probably the reason she'd lost her to begin with. "I'm sorry, I'm just.. Reeling. It's hard when you know you're helpless in a situation. I have to learn to accept it, but how?"

Bargaining was part of it and she knew that it was a horrible position to be in. She shook her head, wishing she had these answers for the other woman, but it was not entirely black and white. "I...I don't think you have to figure that out right this minute. I am just so sorry. Please, let me know if you need anything. I am here and I want to help."

"She’s fine, just about taking it easy.” Or maybe that was optimism speaking when she knew that the youngest Agha couldn’t be kept still for long. Still, her way of always believing the best in her siblings meant that she hoped that Selin would at least take her diagnosis and advice seriously enough to adapt some of it. “I’m just doing my job.” Not a play at modesty but genuine belief that there was nothing special about what she did. Not when caring for others had always been second nature to her, as easy as breathing. “I’m used to it now.” Smile tired but reassuring, hiding the fact that sometimes she couldn’t help but worry she was a little too used to it all. Senses and emotions dulled by how often she had been exposed to unprecedented situations. With casualties only going up she thought it might be for the best if she became numb to it all. “But I was wondering if I could set up something of a standing order? Fresh flowers always bring me joy and I feel that’s been lacking recently.”

Nan was relieved to hear that Selin was fine. Selin was amazing, but also she was glad for Zeina's sake because she knew just how much her family meant to her too. The statement from her ex-sister in law made her sigh a little and give a shake of her head. "You being a humble queen is so sweet, but you deserve all the praise too." She argues as she felt like it was deserved and Zeina needed to hear it. Hearing one of the reasons why she'd come by, Nan's excitement in her posture and eyes brightened as she was thrilled to hear the idea. "Oh my goodness really? I would be happy to have that for you." She frowned a little at the thought that Zeina was having a hard time with bringing her own joy to her life. "Oh...well, I mean I know so much has happened so this might be dumb to ask, but is everything okay?

Even though she'd tried dealing with it in numerous ways over the years, the only thing that ever soothed her anxiety was something tangible. Facts to fight off whatever narrative her mind created. So often the only antidote she had to worrying about someone was seeing them and while she'd check in on Nan after the fires it wasn't enough to put her mind at rest. Spending time in her company would likely be the only thing that took the edge off and she knew she could use the distraction so could only imagine how it'd feel for someone who'd been in one of the burning buildings. "Okay so, here begins the first ever pie tasting evening." Hand moved over the table to gesture to the four boxes all containing a generous slice of pie. "This week it's cherry and I went to the four best places according to the internet. So, let's see if they can be trusted." Light laughter bubbled up before she held out a fork in one hand and a spoon in the other. "Choose your weapon." There was a hope that it was the kind of night that would take Nan's mind off everything as well as her own. Or if not, she could think of few better ways to talk about their worries than over slices of pie.

"Pie tasting evening?" She repeated back in question, because she had never heard of such a thing before this very moment. It sounded intriguing though and Nan wanted to know what all came along with this. Quickly though she saw the pie slices and her brows raised. "Wait...that's so cool. I love a good taste testing moment!" She exclaims as the idea sounded really cute and Gracie had gone to the effort, as she always did, to go above and beyond. "I definitely love this pie tasting evening already." Nan exclaims as she chose the fork, feeling like it was a better option. Nan wasn't a huge fan of cherry pies however she would have it if someone was offering like Gracie was now, they looked aesthetically pleasing, but maybe these places could change her mind. "What inspired this night?" She asked out of curiosity before she looked over the closest slice of pie to her.

𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 people as being sacred. not all of them, as hers hadn’t been. two of her siblings might as well not exist. but the bond between francis and nan certainly was. she never wanted to overstep. “well, obviously you already know he just cares and protectin’ you is his way of showin’ it. and i’m sure you stayin’ here is helping your mom feel more at ease.” she hesitated, just a second too late. “is she worried?” she blinked once. what a stupid question. of course leah was worried. that’s what moms did, they worried about their children. until making friends, romy hadn’t worried about anyone. rosa, maybe, when they were small. “do you like going out and all? like to clubs?” she tried to picture it: nan somewhere loud and crowded, dancing, men probably circling her all night. she had that kind of face. “not sure why he hasn’t come over. i don’t know him too well, but i imagine he heard i moved in and felt like he should give us space.” he seemed emotionally intelligent like that. “he doesn’t need to feel that way, though. no one does. i love surprise visitors,” romy lied, which she very seldom did. it probably sounded stilted coming from her mouth. in all honesty, she’d lived through so many surprises she preferred predictability. but she never wanted nan to feel like she couldn’t just drop by. “that’s…sweet. do you, uh, y’know...like him?”

“yeah, i’ve noticed,” she nodded at the punishing himself comment. “i tried to tell him if something happened, you and your mom would be devastated. and we talked about it. i think he’s since moved on.” her mind drifted to what he’d asked her after that particular conversation. the ring finger on her left hand burned hot. though she’d set her engagement ring by the bedside table, she knew it would have to come up eventually. but she certainly couldn’t be the one to drop that news to nan. it had to come from francis. so she said nothing, at least for now. instead, she furrowed her brows and shifted her mind to something she’d been wondering. “about the flower shop. well, i was thinkin’ that after everything, you should be takin’ it easy and…i mean, i know a lot about gardening. and flowers. and i do menial tasks real good, i can mop, sweep, scrub. so i was wonderin’ if maybe you wouldn’t mind a little help around the shop?” she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and waited, hoping that hadn’t come out too awkwardly. “oh, i’m not askin’ for a job by the way,” she added, clarifying. “no pay. i just wanna help.”

“i’m puttin’ together a care package for romeo. think your friend would want one? i can make it. for you to bring him.” she could tell this was hard for nan, mind flashing back to that ‘cushy’ childhood francis mentioned they had. that didn’t prepare you for anything like this. “um, i’m not sure about candyland. i think it has to be tetris but it’s not, like, hard…” she said, trailing off, not wanting to come across wrong. it just wasn’t that hard of a game. “i’ve never played a board game.” saying it out loud made her realize how bizarre it was. but it wasn’t like she and her sister were going out of their way to make time for candyland. they’d watched tv and movies laying in motel beds, tried video games at the homes of skeevy losers rosa was using for a place to crash. but they’d never played a board game. “actually? i have seen the parent trap. i didn’t realize the actress isn’t a twin.” she didn’t know lindsay’s name off the top of her head. “i like the part at summer camp. i think i would’ve loved summer camp. did you ever go?”

At the mention of Leah, Nan realized that she had barely heard from her mom. Which wasn't the greatest feeling. She wondered how upset her mom would be if this was Francis. And that felt like a private thought to keep to herself. She gave a small shrug in response to Romy's question. "She hasn't really like...said much." She confessed as she felt a little awkward at admitting that. Glad for the subject change, Nan nodded with a revived smile. "Yeah, it's fun to get lost in the music and the vibes sometimes! But like I totally also get the other side of why you might not enjoy it." Nan couldn't answer why Romeo wouldn't have come over by now, but to be fair it hadn't been like Francis was very forthcoming with Romy's move in. She laughed softly at the thought of her liking surprise visitors, remembering their first meeting although she thought both of them handled it very well. "Of course I like Romeo! What's not to like!" Nan shared not entirely catching the drift his brother's girlfriend was intending.

"Well you're very right about the fact that I would be extremely upset if anything ever happened to him." She felt like that was probably pretty obvious to even a very brief observer. Nan loved both of her brothers and wouldn't be extremely upset so she could only imagine how Yves was feeling now. At Romy's mention of helping her at the flower shop, her brows raised in shock. "Wait...what? I mean if you want to come help out you can, but really I'm fine but I wouldn't mind it. But, I would definitely would feel extremely weird about you not being compensated for your time. So you will absolutely be paid." Nan knew she could do with the help, but it was important to also make sure Romy was valued and that even though she was offering help she wanted to make sure she was being paid.

Nan nodded eagerly at the offer for a care package for Yves. When Romy shared Tetris wasn't hard she frowned slightly, because for Nan it felt like it was. When the other woman shared she had never played a board game it wasn't entirely shocking, although a bit surreal, from what Romy had shared it made sense to Nan. "Well, we are for sure going to have to have a board game night while I'm here...hopefully Frannie doesn't traumatize you though with his poor sportsmanship." Nan beamed when she heard that Romy had seen The Parent Trap. "It's one of my favorite movies! Oh I totally thought Lindsay Lohan was a twin too until like I realized she wasn't! She is just that good of an actor. You totally would have thrived at summer camp. I went a few times with my Girl Scout troop. I liked some parts of it, but not other parts. I'll be honest."

She gave him a weirded out look, her wild imagination getting the better of her and Nan definitely didn't want to say what she was thinking aloud to her brother. Nan frowned at the comment about Elijah and shook her head. "I mean so am I so maybe I should help." It wasn't like they mentioned their money very often, but she felt like in this scenario it was needed. Francis was right that playing the 'if only' game would get her no further than what actually happened. She was just lucky to have gotten out when she did. "The last time we lived together for a prolonged period of time was over a decade ago, Judy. Five days. And that's that." She smiled at the contact, happy that he'd calmed down. "No more standing still." She promised as she let out a small inhale and exhale.

"I can see you as a red head." He hums, turning his chin to add; "Not a bad thing. You should've seen me ten years ago. Couldn't find me if your life depended on it." Back when Maddox was even more out of control, when he would skip from one European city to another without care. Now, ten years later, there's a host of things and people keeping him steady. Friends whose well being keep him up at night. Nan, especially. "Please, Nan. Just accept the compliment. Don't make me burst out my A-game on you." Although Maddox isn't particularly peppy or in the mood to pull out his moves. Who would be after what the city's endured? Sighing, he wraps his hand around her, the consolation better than anything else he can offer up.

"No, I don't think so, either." He wishes he had something more reassuring to say. But at the very least, he can give Nan this; she's right about this. "Makes it all the more important to snuff them out of whatever shithole they're hiding in." Cowards hiding in the shadows... It makes his skin boil. "Anything I can do?"

Nan couldn't help the small snort at his comment about seeing her as a redhead. "Good thing you weren't in the salon with me the other day, when I almost got a chop. You may have convinced me to go red head a la Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic." She joked, knowing that she was not bold enough to do all of that. Hearing Maddox share he was basically unreachable, she definitely could not relate. To be fair she did have moments where she was out and did plenty of things she never made herself fully lost like it sounded like Maddox did. She laughed at what seemed like a threat, "You're the one who came across the street looking mortified of what I looked like, Mister Suave." Nan did not mind as she knew it was just concern. She moved to give him a hug, appreciative of his general concern for her over the past few months. She cared about him and he surprisingly seemed to care about her well being too.

Nan pulled away to look up at Maddox, feeling his anger towards the situation which she could certainly relate to. "I mean...I don't think there's anything you can do, except for hope that someone catches them. "I would say taking care of yourself is something you could do." She gave a soft smile to him as she knew that it was easier said than done, but she was just as concerned for him and make sure he was okay.
