The warm breeze settles sunlit lullabies amongst the greenery. He sighs, lost in the comfort of cloudless azure and dandelion stars, breathing slowly as he lets himself go towards vast dreamscapes for the second time.

Even with his eyes closed, the warmth peeks in.

"Loki," she says gently, pinching his cheek to wake him from slumber. Smooth fingertips poke a myriad of taps on his cool skin, and he tries to suppress a bubbling grin. He can't help it, for her touch has only ever brought searing comfort.

The corners of his lips rise up, and she lets out a giggle. Hearing her mellow laughter tempts him to flutter his eyelids open so that he can get a glimpse of the ever-glowing beam reaching up to her honeyed orbs.

A calloused palm places itself atop the woman's soft one and pulls her hand towards his lips. "Yes, dear?" he whispers, breath tickling the inside of her wrist.

She then ruffles his wild fringe to fully catch his attention. Her laugh now echoing through the meadows, swallowed by the vastness of summer’s sun smiling down at them.

He perks up from his lying-down position and really looks at her, sleep totally forgotten for the time being. She smiles cheekily at him, her expression hinting at something she’d want to tell him, but she’s stubborn enough to let him go first. After all, Lorelei Rios tends to always start a challenge in regard to him (and most of the time he loses).

He could get used to this.

All those years ago, only finding comfort from the darkness within had been his way to keep the pain in check. Keeping the walls up, fortifying them to be towering enough, would maybe scare away the world from hurting him, which in return would prevent him from inflicting that same harm on others. It was stable, precise even, in the way the rot would start and stop with him. But it was exactly like how glass can cut, cold and brutal, leaving no space for even a breath.

Until her.

Even with stones stacked so high, her ivy had managed to take root and grow, persistently wrapping around each corner and crevice. Leaving behind cracks in what was once a firm barricade to finally let the light shine in. Defenseless he was, but not at all heartless, as he thought he’d be. And she had capitalized on that, such a sly woman who’d crept in so seamlessly; she didn’t pry and would let him open up in his own time.

Well, who wouldn’t come after her? She’s something of the divine, and he, a mere mortal who only ever experienced death, needed to relish that ounce of vitality that she so mercifully bestows. Gone was the cold bite of winter for the other solstice has risen, melting away all the doubt and the nightmares of the past. He knew right then and there, when their eyes first met, she was sunlight personified, not only in its positive facets but also the danger that lies within it. She was intense in a way that once you came close, there was no turning back, and only the brave would dare, just like Icarus had flown too close to his chosen fatality.

And he chooses her.

Again and again.

If she would gladly take him.

For the rest of their days.

He grins down at her, Loki’s never been good at words but he tries. He had promised her, as he gazed at the gold band on his hand, that he would try.

He takes her left hand, circling the identical gold band seated on her fourth finger, and presses two taps. Followed by a tap, a long tap, and two more taps. Lorelei rolls her eyes at his antics but fixes her seating so she can fully face him and mirrors his actions as she holds onto his other arm.

short story: wishful cravings

Every time she'd take her place at the dinner table, Emira would make a wish, though the wishes do not go as far as the incandescent grandeur of "win the lottery" or "find out I am the long-lost princess from a kingdom far, far away."

Then this would go on. Same old longing upon food-filled tabletops. Emira continues to hold on to those wishes, wondering if they will ever come true as her lips slurp on the soft udon in this particular midnight storm.

Within her imagination, she cooks up her own fantasy. Replace the topped tempura with the tender chicken breast, adding a handful of garlic, toasted into a tawny gold. Flush out the kakejiru and pour in the hearty chicken broth instead. She looks out toward the window, teardrops sending a ripple of mellow beats reverberating through the glass pane. She thinks about the chicken mami crafted from scratch, it's swimming in her head, and Emira remembers how her lola would crown it with a soft-boiled egg.

Breakfast is an entirely tricky matter when she starts bargaining for her wishes. Her mornings are laced with what-ifs and will-they, reflected upon an empty bowl of miso soup. She taps on her spoon and takes the lid off the clay pot filled with steaming porridge, but a look of dread washes over her features when a piece of Japanese pickled plum rests on top of the shirogayu. Emira can already taste the tartness of the red-orange side dish as the sticky rice grains absorb the juice oozing from the preserved fruit.

She blows on her bangs, huffing out her dismay. Nanay must have sneaked it in, she knows that I don't eat those.

Her mother must have heard her impeding thoughts when she suddenly gives Emira an iron stare of her own.

The daughter shrinks and begrudgingly gives in, slowly nipping on the sour plum.

If I chew on my umeboshi will they allow me to go back? So that I'll get a chance to munch on Maman's homemade atchara.

What if I wake up every morning to boil the miso soup? Will Nanay and Tatay send me back home to stay with Maman as a reward?

I rather have tapa for breakfast, it will surely be accompanied by Maman's atchara. Maybe, I should study harder so that they'll let me visit the Philippines for my next vacation.

Promise after promise, Emira continues to barter for her wishes to come true. Please, please, please listen. Rapid breaths mixed in with desperation run their course as she seizes for a shooting star.

Mornings dampened with the all too familiar waves of humidity. The rooster crows in a fine tune, signaling daylight's ascent. The first thing her heavy-lidded eyes land on is the view of her Maman's wrinkled smile, Emira fully wakes, basking into her lola's sunlit kindness. It truly is infectious, as the girl mirrors the ever-warming beam. A fresh plate of beef tapa, partnered with the stirred sinangag is placed on top of the wild rustle of her duvet. They sit in tender silence, soaking in the early dew of Sunday morning.

Her wishes now bear the yearning for another string of memories with her lola, back in her hometown. May it be over languid stirs for a pot of the gooey champorado at 3 am or even the searing afternoons of dry season where they help themselves with a pitcher of calamansi juice, the sharp citrus decadence making tropical troubles a bit more bearable.

All she ever wanted is simple.

So why can't she grasp it?

The quiet plea forms silent tears in her eyes as the rainfall threatens to cascade at any moment. So she takes the chewing to a steady slow, counting down the steps til' she has gotten both feet planted on the ground, and finally she stills. Emira then downs a glass of water as she manages to swallow the brined treat.

This is not one but of many. Alone with her own melancholic musings over the dinner table, she was raised in a culture where savoring food is a way for people to express their love.

A love she has looked for in every serving of yakiniku or an intense bowl of tantanmen. Up until now, Emira continues to open up to the eccentricity of the land she currently resides in.

But her heart (and taste buds) drift back towards Maman's home-cooked menudo, greeting Emira after a long day with her childhood friends or the special sinigang of Tita Joy, the tangy stew gets a bit more interesting with pakwan incorporated into the soup.

Every mealtime, Emira makes a wish. And she'll hold on to them, looking forward to another chance with her dearest loved ones back in her homeland.

“Myriad Stars” by Ba Jin

I love moonlit nights and am also fond of star-strewn sky. Back in the old days, in my home town, when I was in our courtyard enjoying the cool nights of July and August, what I enjoyed most was watching the stars fill the sky. As I watched them, I forgot everything, as though I had returned to my mother’s arms.

Three years ago, in Nanjing, the house I lived in had a back door. Whenever I opened that door at night, I saw a tranquil nighttime view, with a large vegetable garden below, and above, the blue sky densely studded with clusters of stars. Though stars seemed small and weak to the naked eye, the brightness of the starlight seemed ubiquitous. I had been reading about astronomy then and knew about some of the stars, so they were like my friends and would often talk to me.

Now, I am on the sea. Because I gaze at the stars every night, I have come to know them well. Lying on my back on the deck and looking into the sky, I see myriad stars, half-bright and half-dim, hanging in the deep blue sky. The ship moves and they do, too. They look so close to me, as though they are falling! Gradually, my vision blurs. I seem to see innumerable fireflies dancing around me. Night at sea is mellow, tranquil, and dreamy. Looking at the many familiar stars, I seem to see them twinkling at me and seem to hear them whispering. Now, I am completely lost in them. Nestled in their embrace, I smile and fall asleep. I feel like a child, sleeping in my mother’s arms.
