Good Afternoon!
Im Elliot, and I'll be running this blog from now on! I've made a carrd and I suggest giving it a read-through! Hopefully I can make good content soon :>
Characters like Naoto Shirogane and Chihiro Fujisaki are portrayed in their games as “not trans” due exclusively to socially ingrained transphobia in Japan.
Notice that in both these cases the source material portrays dressing and living as other than their assigned gender as a personal weakness of character.
If ONLY the character had more strength of heart and willpower, they would embrace their assigned gender and live that way.
The text reframes both character’s struggle with gender the same way– as a struggle with sexism– because, broadly speaking, that’s how being transgender has been framed in their society.
Socially, transwomen are seen as deficient men.
Socially, transmen are seen as overly butch women.
Like in America, and other parts of the world its only recently that these types of views are even starting to change.
These characters can be viewed as cis, certainly they are as far as canon is concerned, but only due to their narratives having been framed from the point of view described.
i made the mistake of reading the notes on a lot of trans naoto posts so now y’all get responses to some of the bad takes i keep seeing. buckle the fuck up
• “naoto’s arc is about sexism specific to the japanese workplace and calling her trans erases that to fit it into a western lens!!!”
you guys do know that there are japanese trans people right. like i agree that there are lots of issues with workplace sexism and gender roles in japan, but there’s also lots of issues with transphobia. y’all do know that you do not have to be white and/or live in a western country to be trans, and that queer stories and issues are GLOBAL stories and issues right.
• “naoto isn’t a man, she just pretended to be one to get respect in a male-dominated field, if you say she’s a trans man you’re ruining that whole character arc about accepting your true self!”
here’s the thing! the way that character arc was done was fucking transphobic! the trope of a woman going into disguise as a man for safety/respect/etc is tried and tested, it shows up literally everywhere, and the trope itself is not inherently transphobic. HOWEVER, when persona 4 incorporates Really Obviously Trans elements into that trope, like chest binding and literal gender reassignment surgery, then we have a problem, because now you have a cis character going through a trans narrative in the name of insecurity.
p4 does everything it can to embody the typical narrative of a young transitioning trans guy: binding, changing your name, revising official documents to be known as a man in work and school records, dressing masculine, and forming a shadow literally based on transitional surgery. plus the stuff naoto’s shadow says isn’t about being “a weak little girl” or “no one will ever take you seriously when you’re just a little girl” like you would expect it to be for someone who’s arc is supposed to be about dealing with misogyny, it’s all “you’ll never be a real man,” “you can’t cross the boundary between the sexes,” “no one will ever see you as you are” comments. you know, textbook trans guy insecurity. but the game backtracks on that and says naoto was just insecure about being a female detective and wanted people to take them seriously, and that they should get rid of these feelings and accept their true, female self.
and this is where the problem lies. when you write an obviously trans-coded narrative, but make the character experiencing it an insecure cis person or someone trying to avoid discrimination, you say either 1. trans people are really their assigned gender and are just insecure, but accepting the gender they were given at birth will make them happier and more confident or 2. being a trans man is a way for cis women to escape misogyny. 1 is obviously stupid and has been talked about by plenty of people, but 2 is a BIG problem and a wild assumption to me. being a trans man is seen as an “out” for naoto, or a solution to a problem, as if once they’re a man they’ll face no discrimination whatsoever, when in reality things like getting their gender marker changed in official documents that would allow them to go by “he” and wear the boy’s uniform at school and passing well enough to be seen as a boy in public would be a HUGE ordeal that includes a lot of stress and rejection and danger. realistically, naoto is putting themself in a really precarious position, because if they are exposed as actually afab to the media, to the detective agency, or to the school, they are set for a hell of a lot of ridicule, discrimination, and potential physical danger. but persona 4 doesn’t reflect this at all, because it’s transphobic and thinks that being trans is the easy way out for cis women experiencing misogyny!
• really any argument that boils down to “naoto is a cis woman in canon whose struggle is about sexism, not being trans”
like i already addressed enough of this, i think, but what really gets me is that kanji’s arc is fucked up in a lot of the same ways naoto is and no one is clowning on posts about kanji being gay? his shadow is a very clear (and offensive) gay caricature, and his narrative is very much one about a mlm guy experiencing homophobia from his peers and acting out because of that. and yet the game backtracks to saying “oh no it’s not about liking men, kanji is insecure about his femininity and softer hobbies because of toxic masculinity” and then literally uses naoto to refute his queerness because “look the only guy kanji was ever shown as attracted to was ACTUALLY a woman all along and now that kanji knows she’s a girl he can be openly attracted to her!” in canon, naoto is about as cis as kanji is straight, and yet EVERYONE is on board for portraying kanji as gay in fan works like it’s not even a question, but there has to be a huge debate anytime anyone wants to call naoto trans. legitimately, i think i’ve seen someone argue about kanji being mlm on a post...once? ever? meanwhile every post about naoto being trans has to have a horde of discourse, i’m literally already prepping for the bad notes this post will get because y’all cannot leave this ALONE
in conclusion, i am not saying that everyone has to think naoto is a trans man or forcing anyone to stop liking a character in the way they want or anything like that. i am saying that the naoto’s canon character arc is transphobic and if you’re trying to fight with trans people about how they want to reclaim something that uses a lot of their experiences, don’t.
for ONCE i remembered a fictional character’s birthday!! (please don’t use she/her pronouns for naoto, thank you!!)

Hey!! I’m no longer going to be running this blog!
So, what’s going to happen to it?
I’ll be giving this blog to my friend, and he’ll be running it from now on. I think he’ll continue to post content, probably more often than I do.
I’m really sorry, and I want to thank everyone for all the positive feedback I’ve gotten from running this, how ever it makes using tumblr INCREDIBLY stressful. When I get notifications or asks, I never know if it’s going to be something good or not, and I tend to avoid the site a lot because of it. This isn’t an impulse thing, I’ve thought about it for a while, and decided that this was better than deleting it.
I hope you’ll treat the new admin with care! <3 Thank you so much for everything.
Anyways Naoto Shirogane is transgender because he was willing to let his shadow magically change his sex
Naoto Shirogane is transgender because his story focuses heavily on gender dysphoria
Naoto Shirogane is transgender because he openly expressed his desire to be born as a man.
Naoto Shirogane is transgender because his shadow deals with internalized transphobia and once he voices his self doubt (his shadow calling himself “really a girl”) no one in the group respects Naoto’s preferred pronouns, immediately switching to she/her, and never give him a chance to truly explain himself, instead opting to push him to “accept that he’s a woman”
Naoto Shirogane was afraid of being seen as a child and (because of his dysphoria) as a girl, and him being treated with misdirected misogyny in the past does not mean he was really a girl all along. He went through great lengths to be seen as a boy (more than a cis woman ever would, especially to the point of extremely dangerous chest binding), and if he still wasn’t taken seriously it was because he was and is a child (15)
Naoto’s romance route is disgusting as to unlock it you must push your views for him to be a woman on him when he is expressing his doubts about his identity.
Things like this do NOT happen on accident. ATLUS knew what they were doing.
Atlus is complicit with the transphobic narrative of Naoto Shirogane. It doesnt matter if they were TRYING to address misogyny in Japanese workplaces what they actually DID was write a trans man who is forced to ignore his true feelings for the comfort of everyone else around him, and imply that trans men are really just struggling with internalized misogyny and that is extremely transphobic.
I am under no obligation to accept canon in my own fan works or in my own fandom space. Im under no obligation to interact with people who DO.
The Naoto post i made a month ago now serves as a giant blocklist for me and every other transmasc persona4 fan.
If you can’t handle a trans headcanon you don’t need to interact with me. Block me and move on like an adult.
DO NOT INTERACT OR ARGUE WITH ME OR THIS POST IF YOU CALL NAOTO A WOMAN. THIS IS NOT AN INVITATION. I GENUINELY HATE YOU AND DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH YOUR CIS/BOOTLICKING NONSENSE.
Don´t forget this guy, he is either gay or bi, and I think Atlus fucked up:
They did my dude Kanji dirty. So, his story is that this is a guy who adopted a though persona because he was afraid that his more feminine hobbies would make people think he was less manly, right? And while I´m whole about stories that descontruct toxic masculinity. But it felt they were going for something else here.
You see his shadow acts like a caricature of a gay man. In fact a lot of discussions that I´ve read imply that he´s resemble typical campy stereotypes in Japanese Pop culture.
Then you see his other form:
I mean two semi-naked muscled men? check, holding two male symbols!? check.
You know what. I think his shadow symbolizes his internalized homophobia. Why does his shadow look like a steretoype? Because he thinks that is how gay people are supposed to act like, so he puts on a masculine front because he is afraid of how people will treat him if they found out. Heck it even explains why is hiding his knitting hobby, because to him it´s a sign of his “gayness” leaking out and being obvious.
Also as it turns out be might also be attracted to Naoto. And if I´m remembering correctly this might also made him reconsider his feelings on the matter and you would basically accepting he likes guys and that is okay. Heck a love story between two queer character founding acceptance and solace in each other would be great.
But nope, it´s played for laughs when Kanji finds out that Naoto is a ”girl”, and feels relief. Yeah, what a relief he´s doesn´t feel the need to figure out his sexuality further. See for example that scene from the beauty apgeant event.
It was such a betrayal, a very milquestoast characterization. it´s like they were initially gonna have a more openly gay character and then they pull it out at the last minute because they lost their guts.
You see, by saying that Naoto isn´t a boy, not only is it transphobic but it also removes the entire point of the confrontation with shadow kanji. It makes his sexuality ambiguous rather than outright confirmed.
Not to mention that when Kanji likes Naoto before he’s revealed to be AFAB, it’s treated as joke material and the other characters are more oblivious to his crush. After Naoto’s reveal, their relationship is portrayed as ‘okay’ now because its “straight” (heavy emphasis on the quotations). We’re like, supposed to ship it now or something. It’s just really annoying and it’s like you said, throwing away all their development

hey! just a question,, don't answer if it makes u uncomfy but are you ok with people who hc naoto as enby following u?
Yes, I am! As long as you don’t use she/her pronouns or feminine terms for Naoto. Masculine, neutral, and neo are all ok!
Why is it harmful to see Naoto Shirogane as a girl?
[This is not an argumentative post. I am a trans man. This is meant to be educational anyone who denies or even gets aggressive at the idea of Naoto being trans.]
There’s already some posts about this, but I still wanted to make my own and dump it. I apologize for not putting this under a cut, but I feel like people will dismiss it otherwise.
Naoto introduces himself as a boy. Naoto/ 直斗 is a boys given name that means “Honest Big Dipper”, likely not the name he was given by his parents at birth since he’s afab. He clearly doesn’t use his ‘natural’ voice, and tries to make his voice sound deeper, but it still sounds off. This implies he’s working on voice training still and hasn’t mastered his range.
From just looking at canon art of Naoto, we can tell he binds. Sometimes he has a very clear bust, and sometimes he’s completely flat. In Line Sticker art, this is confirmed to be done with bandages.
I bring this up because it’s important to establish: Atlus does not know what they’re doing. Safe binding is not a trans only resource. Cis afab cosplayers bind if they want a flat chest when cosplaying either flat chested women or men, so safety on doing this should be known.
Bandages are not safe. Naoto is putting himself in danger just to make himself look flat chested.
Let’s look at his shadow:
Regardless of in boss-form or not, the shadow has a flat chest. If Naoto’s shadow was a part of himself that he was hiding from, and what he’s hiding is that he’s supposedly a girl, why does his shadow fully present as male?
That’s not what his shadow is. His shadow is Naoto’s insecurities. “He’s not actually a boy. He’s childish. He just doesn’t like himself. He’s scared that people will see him differently if he was clearly a girl. He’s just doing this to success.”
Taking these thoughts that Naoto’s shadow expresses, it becomes obvious that he has internalized transphobia. He’s justifying why he identifies the way he does and telling himself he’s not really what he is.
The game portrays these thoughts and insecurities as internalized misogyny that he needs to overcome.
I don’t know how to tell you that telling an afab person who has said that they’re a boy that they are, in fact, really a girl with internalized misogyny is incredibly transphobic, toxic, and harmful.
This exact mind set is the reason I personally and many other trans men are not allowed to start our medical transition until we are able to leave our parents.
For Naoto’s justifications, saying that it’s so he won’t be judged in the work place- His mother was a famous detective. There’s no reason he should have this fear, and even then, why go so far as he has? Voice training, unsafe binding, and for his work place to not know his agab or dead name? He would have had to legally change it. No one who is just pretending to be a gender they aren’t would not go through THIS much trouble.
There’s also the tons of medical themes that Naoto’s shadow talks about, which- again- for a trans person, having medical themes and surgery on the mind, especially a ‘life altering’ surgery, it’s not that uncommon among trans folk who plan to medically transition. Why would a detective’s dungeon be medical themed when he has no medical traits to his character aside from, perhaps, his transition plans?
Something that bugs me and I’m sure many others a LOT is how, as soon as Naoto’s shadow says he’s ‘actually a girl,’ everyone instantly begins to refer to Naoto as a girl. When this happens from a source that isn’t the character themself, it’s blatantly transphobic. If you hear about someone’s “actual gender” from a person who ISN’T that someone, talk to them about it. Ask them how they actually want to be referred by.
Another small thing, but Kanji is meant to be gay but then they pulled “Aha, he has a crush on Naoto, so he isn’t ACTUALLY gay!” which, yeah, homophobic and transphobic. If a gay man likes a trans man, that is still just as gay as if he liked a cis man. Making Naoto ‘actually a girl’ was hitting two birds with one stone, and cishets- and even other queer people, sadly- ate that shit up.
I’ll go over some arena screenshots now, thank you to @covecaller for posting them.
How much needs to be said about this one? It’s very common for trans people in unwelcoming situations to wish they were born as the gender they actually are, and it especially would make sense for Naoto. As soon as he was outed as afab, no one refereed to him as a boy and they never even asked him about it first.
This is blatant transphobia. “You lack confidence in yourself” is word for word what my mother said to me when I came out to her. Calling trans people ‘lies’ or a ‘liar’ for their identity? Also blatant transphobia.
You can look at the other arena screencaps Zach posted here.
You can say all you want that p4 is old, so of course it’s going to be bad, but so what? Letting it constantly get off the hook and never criticizing the creators will give them a message. Letting things like this go hurts the minorities that that character is a part of, and this is backed up even less by the fact that Atlus STILL hasn’t done anything about it. There is still persona 4 content being made, and Naoto is still being sexualized when he is, by the way, 15-17 throughout the series, and misgendered.
Yes, Naoto is portrayed as a girl who isn’t confident in himself and has internalized misogyny in persona 4, but that’s because the creators see trans men as girls who aren’t confident in themselves and have internalized misogyny.
Reblogs are highly appreciated, feel free to make your own additions with more proof if you feel like I missed out on something important with explaining why Naoto should not be portrayed as a girl.
Something else i really disliked about Naoto’s treatment is his social link, especially the romance option. In order to unlock Naoto’s dateable line, the protagonist has to tell Naoto to be more feminine. Aside from being transphobic and gross in context of the rest of the game, the way it’s done is also very telling. Just about every instance I can recall, Naoto usually expresses his choices, then doubts himself. For instance, worrying about his voice. The protagonist than then state his preference for Naoto to be feminine.
I think that’s a very important distinction: Naoto is not asking for reassurance to gain more confidence as a girl with internalized misogyny, he’s literally being told to be a girl when he shares his fears and worries. The protagonist has to impose his views on Naoto’s gender in order to date him. This is digusting and I refused to participate in any of it when I first played the game, despite originally deciding to date Naoto. If he can only be romanced by shutting down his personhood and gender, then it’s not worth it. I still remember the dialogue option of “I prefer you as a girl”. That is not supportive, that is transphobic. The whole social link romance line is similarly abusive and it disgusts me that its an option, especially since the protagonist forces Naoto to crossdress as a culmination and this is seen as “romantic”. Ugh.
While I’m at it, the game’s continual “““jokes””” about Naoto’s big chest are gross. He’s 15 atlus.
This is a very important addition, thank you so much.
Wanted to add on but I’ve written a document about why Naoto is trans coded.
It says some things already stated here plus a few other things, so. Take it as you will.
One correction (idk enough about the source material to comment on the rest): those aren’t bandages. They’re a sarashi, a Japanese garment/ wrapping that’s sometimes worn by men and women.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Sarashi
Thank you for the correction on what they’re called, but after doing some quick searching, sarashi is something dangerous to bind with. Naoto canonically has large breasts and p4 really likes to make ‘jokes’ about it, so even if sarashi can be worn without any danger, Naoto is using it specifically to flatten his chest out, and that can steal leave the same harm as binding with bandages. He’s not just wearing it, he has it tightened enough to make him pass as amab, which is a very big issue still.
yoooo there’s a mod for y’all who like trans naoto and don’t wanna play the game misgendering him. comes in enby and trans boy variants.
https://ipreparedexplosiverunes.tumblr.com/personamods
Also, something I’ve been wanting to say since I’ve had people make these comments towards this blog, either in replies or reblogs:
If you are a trans woman and see Naoto as a trans girl, I’m not going to argue with you. I’m trans masculine, and we have very different experiences with gender and transphobia. I’ll never be able to fully understand what you go through, I do not experience transmisogyny and I don’t have the same experience with my gender.
I personally feel strongly that Naoto is a boy and get very uncomfortable when they’re referred to as a girl, and I highly relate to them and how they are treated by others because of their gender. The things they’re told, the things they say about themselves, and the way people treat them is very relatable to me as someone who is trans masculine. This is why I have dni if you think Naoto is a girl in my bio rather than cis. I can’t see them as anything other than a trans boy, and it feels invalidating and upsetting to see it stated otherwise due to how many experiences I share with Naoto.
If you’re a trans woman or trans feminine and feel how ever you feel about Naoto for whatever reason and see them as a trans girl as well, more power to you. I’m genuinely glad you were able to find comfort in a character that you can share experiences with. I have no argument for you, because there is none I can make, and to try would be invalidating your own experiences.
We both are allowed to have our boundaries- I won’t feel poorly of you if you block me, as I do the same whenever I see someone refer to Naoto as a girl. Our internet space is ours, and we’re free to block out what ever upsets us.
Happy pride month, everybody. I apologize for the lack of content, but I’ve barely been using tumblr recently for the sake of my mental health. I hope you understand. ^^;;
But, I think I’ll take some pride icon requests for any persona character games 3-5 this month. So feel free to send those in, although no promises on how quickly they’ll be done.
