End of working day! 🍰☕️ The café’s most popular item is a dessert inspired by the art of Piet Mondrian, featuring geometric blocks of white velvet cake, colored red, blue and yellow, stacked together and glued with chocolate.

Reflection time ~
Time flies. I love lectures and workshops so much. This class open my minds. The first day that we did letters in our pockets. It was like half of my brain was gone. I think there are good variety of techniques, theories, works presented. Plus, a bunch of questions about design for me to think about. I really interested in what Karen said about coding. I don’t know how to do it but definitely will give it a try this break. Also, I think I will expose myself to publication world. I personally liked lecture about future of design because I always ask myself, what now? what kind of designer I’m I going to be. What is left for me to do. The concept of designing alongside with technology gives me general idea. Also, I like The Memphis and postmodernism lecture. I have struggled through final project because first of all I’m still finding my style as designer. This class give me opportunity to explore number of ways to approach design. Also, seeing everyone works is very inspiring. My classmates are so talented. Before I forget what to say, throughout the course, my objective has changed. At first, don’t really have clear picture of what design is. I came here to find out. I guess right now it is more like how to grow as designer so I can’t say that my goal is satisfied at this point. One thing that I will take from Andy and Karen (one out of many) is don’t be scare to have fun with design. Another thing I realize is I think too much so note to self, like what Andy often said, “T-H-I-N-K-I-N-G with Y-O-U -R H-A-N-D-S”
I’ll see you next semester. Thank you for such a lovely and fun time. bye~
week 12 lecture This topic is so interesting so did a little bit research. Fortunately I own this book called People of Print. Erik Kessels, he’s creative director of communication agency KesselsKramar in Amsterdam. He has background in graphic. The pile of photos is the project that he donloaded twenty-four hours worth of photographs from Flickr and then overloaded gallery space with them. “We have reached a place where photographs are not so special anymore because we can all make fantastic photographs every day on our phones. In the past, photographers learned a craft, but now you don’t have to. It feels like all the great and perfect photographs have been taken – but not all the stories have been told.” I agree that we are overflow with data in the past decade. World change overtime. We have to keep up with it, respond to it, and design to go along with it.

in workshop, Andy and Karen taught us how to use InDesign which is very useful. I already know how to use it a little bit, this workshop help a lot. Also we try composing layout and print it out. Right then, I found first error, I have oversize text. Good to know how to fix it.

The workshop this week reminded me of a beautiful typeface design by Philippe Cossette.
The slightly opaque nature of the colours is from overlapping pieces of cellophane. I love how each of the letters look very short and chunky due to how crowded the semicircles are. I also think his solutions for difficult letters such as ‘M’ and ‘N’ is very creative.

VISUALS / “Ask Me Anything!”
As my creative is a dancer/choreographer/teacher, I was only able to find a limited amount of visuals that were worthy of use within my design. Thus, I decided to illustrate a variety choreographic movements found within videos of him dancing, as I felt that this was the best way to represent his art form without using low quality/mismatch imagery.
Furthermore, in caution of my own creative style dominating my creative’s artistry, I directly outlined his figure from the video screenshots in order to keep the illustrations as honest and accurate as I could.
Like how technology interplay with shirt. This project got me thinking of Ceres. It is a wearable tech. The garment design is changing. This particular garment interpret asteroids that come close to the earth. Combinding data visualizations and human sensations. From wearable media.

The Marías
ASK ME ANYTHING // CONCLUDE
Oh how this assignment has been so much fun yet stressful at the same time. BEFORE i get into the GUTS of how i used my hands to make things, i’d just like to congratulate everyone for making it through these 12 weeks and how amazing everyone’s ask me anythings look. Im really blown away by how our cohort can produce so much creative work. M I N D B L O W N
ALRIGHT!
So the The Marías are a band who formed in LA late 2016. The members include Maria, Josh, Carter, Jesse and Edward. Their unique style of music fits under the genre psychedelic-soul. I was introduced to them last year by a friend and fell inlove with their dreamy like composition. The reason why i decided to do a band instead of a Graphic Designer or Illustrator was because i realized that music plays a major part in my everyday life. The amount of music i consume some would say is unhealthy but i just find so much inspiration through what i listen. So when we were given the assignment of Ask me anything, The Marías was immediately on my list.
The creation of this small publication was probably the most fun ive had designing something. Since this task was driven on more interest in your artist rather then criteria, i knew this would be a great way to explore and really experiment with various medias. I started of searching my local thrift stores for items that could be of use. I happen to come across a few old books which had wonderful hard covers. I was lucky enough to find one that was red! This started the ideas flowing on how i could construct everything.
I had also found myself very interested in cassettes and cassette players. Growing up i never got to really experience the period where cassettes were booming. I found the concept of having physical music to be fascinating and oddly satisfying. Also i had no idea how tape worked so im pretty sure it was magic. Since The Marías had only one album out, (Superclean vol.1), I was determined to record it onto a cassette and find out how to do it. (with their permission ofcourse). After some research on how to record onto cassettes, i borrowed a old stereo player from a friend which enabled me to experiment with recording ontop of old cassettes from spotify. I experimented with different recording settings and Type 1 & 2 cassettes. After some frustration, i recorded the album onto a cassette and sliced the tape so it would only be the duration of their album. With 6 songs in their album, i split 3 and 3 and recorded them onto both side A & B. mmm quick math
The second medium i tried for the first time was Embroidery!!! After having difficulty finding a method to create a foil on my hardcover, i decided to give embroidery a try. With the help of a few youtube tutorials and Matilda’s wisdom, i recreated The Marías logo (which was already an embroidery but on a larger scale). and stuck it onto the front of my cover. Embroidery was alot of fun but it was definitely a risky pathway as it was my first and anything could have gone wrong. It also took a long time so a few ghibli films passed the time :’)
Designing the content within the booklet ran pretty smoothly. I knew i wanted to implement this psychedelic theme into the design aswell as their signature red. What was slightly stressful was the replies coming in 2 days before the deadline. It was another very risky gamble however it was all worth it. Since i had designed everything else, all i had to do was plonk the answers into the slots and rush to dinkums. Note to self, if ever creating another booklet, set up your documents as individual half pages instead of two pages on one piece of paper. Deciphering the correct order on what goes where is a nightmare.
The whole concept of my project was that while you listened to the music, you would read through the booklet and create a connection between the two. I found that the experience of sitting infront of a stereo and having to listen through each song and then flip the cassette, a very warming and meaningful experience. I guess you cant really skip a song forcing you to listen to what the artist has to express. I shrink rapped everything together at the end to give the user (Andy and Karen lol) a real experience of something you would purchase from an artist.
Overall it was SO MUCH FUN creating this and learnt so many new things from it. Id like to thank everyone who helped me with feedback and advice on making this and ofcourse, The Marías for giving me this opportunity and answering my questions.

Like the concept of listening to the track and reading zine at the same time.
Finally bind it into a zine. I couldn’t pull apart my zine but to give hint of what it will looks like when you rip the postcard out of the zine, I used printing error prototype to demonstrate. I think this will be a great way for reader to participate in passing information along instead of keeping it to themselves. For my read (Andy and Karen) please feel free to rip it a part. I got this idea because last year I was joking with my friend since she went to Shanghai to study, I told her that we should write each other postcards. I usually write postcard to myself anyway whenever I travel. Pretty lame, isn’t it?. ;)People don’t send postcards anymore but whenever I received one I felt special. One think I learn from my Von Wong is asking. Asking for a favor isn’t going to hurt anyone, it is a great start for relationship. He make stunning fantastical photograph with story behind it. He make it viral so that it bring up conversation, topic that people are bored to talk about. There one thing that strike me, he said “I know that taking beautiful picture isn’t going to change the world but I hope it will inspire person who can”. We live in society where every information is at the tip of our fingers. Click share and subscribe. This zine has the same concept, it just take a little bit more time before info arrive at you door. Usually 2-3 days for me. ps. I just realized that it was a little too hard to tear. I guessed I didn’t press the tracing wheel hard enough. My bad. Again, thank you so much Von Wong for such a lovely interview. He’s doing project in Greece right now, you can check his work out right here https://www.facebook.com/catherine.soldatou/posts/2234921286534372#greenpeace
