It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.

So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.

What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.

In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.

ok maybe i’m just... sick of tommyinnit..... tbh

i used to be the biggest tommy apologist back in seasons 1 and 2 and then i realized i just.... wasnt having fun. im so sick of tommy never getting to have anything good, because it always ends up in the same cycle. tommy is happy for 0.2 seconds, something horrific happens to him, he gets depressed, he lashes out and becomes increasingly mean and nasty towards the people he cares about, he apologizes, repeat. im not sick of tommy because of his actual character, im sick of the writing and im sick of him being a narrative punching bag because at this point it is neither entertaining nor compelling. and it definitely doesn’t help that the one character who is explicitly an abuse survivor never fucking gets to be happy and is continually killed and manipulated and beaten down by his abuser, even long after he’s supposedly escaped that abusive situation. everyone faults other characters for not caring about tommy, or not doing anything to help him, but tommy’s writing does not facilitate him getting help. ever.

This is a really good take, actually! While all of this is VERY true I do want to point a few things out. Every time it all does happen there are differences with how people interact with him. Because at the beginning people were generally there and now he has no one. Nothing. Not a single thing. So with that said I feel like Tommy’s eventually going to burst and stand up for himself. Like ACTUALLY stand up for himself.

So I do hope that soon enough something will get shaken up with his character. Because it would be a great twist.
