she  excuses  herself  from  their  assigned  waiting  room  under  the  guise  of  heading  to  the  bathroom,  but  it's  really  just  to  do  something  with  this  nervous  energy  coursing  through  her  veins.  it  seems  silly  to  be  this  hung  up  on  all  these  endless  possibilities  of  what  could  go  wrong,  but  yeona  has  always  been  hard  on  herself,  her  own  worst  enemy,  tearing  herself  down  before  she  even  has  a  chance  to  think  of  what  could  go  right.

she's  halfway  through  another  spiral,  mind  racing,  palms  sweating,  mentally  repeating  the  lines  to  I  AM  over  and  over  again  as  if  she'll  forget  them  on  that  big,  big  stage  —  just  when  she  spots  someone  down  the  corridor,  a  familiar  face,  his  head  turning  to  the  left  and  then  the  right,  eyes  peering  curiously  at  the  makeshift  signs  on  the  dressing  rooms,  obviously  seeming  a  little  confused  his  own  group's  name  isn't  there.

for  a  flicker  of  a  second,  the  apprehension  that  had  been  swelling  inside  her  quells,  and  yeona  feels  the  smallest  smile  tug  at  her  lips  as  she  approaches  him.  "yujin-ah,"  she  says,  voice  soft,  gentle,  like  it  always  is  when  she's  someone she feels comfortable around,  and  even  more  so  —  her  friends.  "need  help  finding  your  way  back?"

he takes a slow step back toward the open hallway, his hand lingering on the metal latch of the door as if he’s actually about to give her the exit she’s waiting for, though his eyes stay anchored on her. "stop running away just because i walked in, yeona." he doesn't pull the door shut, keeping himself right there on the threshold -- a stubborn presence that refuses to let her pretend she's invisible. "if you need the space, take it. i'll leave you alone."

𝐈𝐓'𝐒  𝐀  𝐒𝐋𝐎𝐖  𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓  𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎  𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐄,  grueling,  excruciating,  like  the  emotions  welling  up  inside  her  are  burning  through  her  skin,  scorching  the  tender  heart  locked  inside  her  ribcage.  there's  a  sinking  feeling  that  knots  itself  inside  her  chest,  growing  heavier  and  heavier  with  each  second  that  passes  between  them.  there  had  once  been  a  time  where  she  had  admired  his  candor,  when  she  wished  she  could  bottle  how  honest  he  was  with  himself,  with  others,  with  everything  he  encountered.  back  then,  his  words  seemed  overwhelmingly  sincere,  because  she  knew  taeoh  wasn't  the  type  of  person  to  simply  say  something  for  the  sake  of  saying  it.  when  he  spoke,  he  spoke  with  conviction,  with  intent,  and  though  his  words  were  often  blunt,  she  knew  it  meant  that  he  cared,  meant  that  he  treasured  something  enough  to  voice  his  opinion.

the  moment  stretches,  uncomfortable,  the  air  between  them  so  thick  she  finds  herself  resisting the urge to slump her shoulders forward in response to the weight of it all.  she  inhales  through  her  nose,  trying  to  remain  calm  even  though  it  feels  like  no  matter  what  she  says  or  does  next,  he  won't  be  satisfied.  she's  all  too  thankful  when  she  sees  him  begin  to  retreat  back  towards  the  threshold  of  the  door.  maybe  he's  making  the  choice  again  for  the  both  of  them.  maybe  he's  accepted  the  fact  that  she'll  forever  be  a  disappointment.

"i—"  something,  though  she  isn't  sure  what,  begins  to  escape  her,  perhaps  a  protest,  perhaps  another  apology,  but  it  gets  caught  in  her  throat,  tangled  up  in  barbed  wire,  torn,  the  very  second  she  hears  his  voice  spill  into  the  space  between  them.

stop  running  away  just  because  i  walked  in,  yeona.  for  a  split  second,  the  world  turns  on  it's  axis.  the  shift  is  near  violent,  tilting  so  suddenly  that  she  starts to  feel  nauseous.  her  skin  bristles,  somehow hot  and  cold  and the sensation pricking at her like thorns all  at  once. the  knot  that  had  been  wedged  in  her  chest  now  plummets  to  the  bottom  of  her  stomach, and it takes everything in her not to suddenly vomit.  stop  running  away,  her  breath  catches  again,  her  vision  blurs,  and  she  blinks  again,  hard  —  she  doesn't  even  realize  she's  crying  until  it's  too  late,  tired  eyes  burning,  the  first  of  what  could  be  many  tears  finally  breaching  the  threshold  and  spilling  over,  cascading  down  her  cheek  in  an  agonizingly  slow  scene.

"i—"  she  stutters  again,  heart  cracking  wide  open  in  front  of  the  very  person  she  hoped  would  never  see  her  like  this again.  she's  too  fragile  tonight,  teetering  on  the  edge,  and  he  isn't  playing  fair.

yeona  raises  her  palm,  shaking,  trembling  under  the  intensity  of  his  gaze  and  the  weight  of  all  her  bottled  up  emotions.  she  swipes  at  the  tears,  and  something  caught  between  a  sob  and  a  broken  laugh  comes  spilling  out.  "i—i'm  not  running,"  she  tries,  but  they  both  know  that  isn't  true,  only  that  she  wishes  it  wasn't.  "i—i'm  just..."  she  trails  off,  the  words  dancing  on  the  tip  of  her  tongue  —  so  many  things  she  could  say,  like  that  she's  exhausted,  that  she  feels  broken,  that  she  isn't  sure  how  to  make  things  better  when  she's  overwhelmed  by  the  weight  of  her  mother's  expectations  and  the  thought  that  both  she  and  the  members  she  care  so  deeply  about  may  not  see  another  year  together.  she  could  say  that  it  isn't  that  she  needs  to  be  alone,  but  maybe  that  she  actually  needs  someone  right  now  —  but  looking  at  taeoh  through  tear-filled  eyes,  quivering  like  the  fragile  flower  she  has come to be,  to  say  something  like  that  makes  her  think  he'll  only  hate  her  more.

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒  𝐎𝐅  𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓  𝐀𝐑𝐄  𝐓𝐔𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐃  𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐘  𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐘,  the  notebook  closed,  sealed,  hidden  away  somewhere  the  remnants  of  her  recent  emotional  shift  would  be  safe  from  curious  gazes.  she  takes  advantage  of  her  bandmate's  obvious  delight  in  leaving  their  session  for  a  well-deserved  break,  and  tucks  her  words  away  under  lock  and  key  as  the  other  stands  and  stretches,  limbs  popping  and  cracking  in  the  quiet  room.

truthfully,  there's  a  part  of  her  that  feels  a  little  guilty.  though  she  often  pushed  her  feelings  aside,  it  wasn't  that  she  necessarily  wanted  to  be  so  secretive,  as  she  cared  so  deeply  for  her  members  —  yubin  being  one  in  particular,  who  she  often  looked  to  as  a  younger  sibling  of  sorts  —  but  a  larger  factor  in  it  all  was  that  yeona  didn't  exactly  know  how  to  vocalize  what  she  was  feeling,  or  what  she  was  even  thinking  after  all  that  had  transpired  over  the  last  few  weeks.  her  mind  flits  back  to  the  recording  studio  some  time  ago,  the  humming  of  a  computer  running,  the  weight  of  words  better  left  unspoken  and  the  taste  of  salty  tears  on  her  cheeks.

"we  shall,"  she  says  softly,  shifting  so  she's  at  the  younger  female's  side,  reaching  out  to  gently  squeeze  her  arm,  half  as  an  invitation  for  her  to  lead  the  way  and  half  because  she  needed  something  to  touch  so  her  mind  would  stay  grounded  as  she  pushed  down  the  resurfacing  feelings  of  when  she  came  face-to-face  with  taeoh.  "my  treat  today,"  she  continues  on,  a  little  too  quickly,  a  little  too  eagerly,  like  she's  trying  to  fill  the  space  before  her  mind  has  a  chance  to  replay  anything  else.  "you've  been  working  so  hard  lately,  so  let's  get  you  a  double  scoop."

the  words  might  be  a  little  rushed,  but  they  are  genuine,  and  yeona  takes  a  quick  glance  at  the  other  as  the  two  of  them  begin  their  trek  down  the  hallway  towards  the  elevator.  "say,  binnie-ah,"  the  words  leave  her  gently,  like  she  isn't  so  sure  how  she  should  proceed  on  the  subject  she  had  nearly  shut  down  before,  but  something  in  her  wonders  if  yubin  might  be  able  to  shed  some  light  on  things.  she  keeps  it  simple,  soft,  because  diving  into  feelings  is  always  best  starting  at  the  shallow  end.  "how  do  you  think  you'd  write  lyrics  to  a  feeling  you  can't  really  describe?"

it  was  moments  like  these  that  yeona  found  herself  longing  for  winter  to  continue  all  year  long  —  perhaps  naively,  she  loves  when  it's  cold  like  this,  because  that  means  there  are  less  chances  for  her  and  her  labelmates  to  have  to  deal  with  prying  eyes  and  rabid  fans.  when  the  weather  was  frigid  like  it  was  now,  temperatures  so  low  that  she  still  feels  the  chill  of  the  outside  world  even  after  they've  been  sitting  for  several  minutes,  it  meant  that  reporters  and  admirers  were  more  interested  in  finding  somewhere  warm  to  sit  instead  of  treading  through  the  snow  to  follow  two  idols.

not  that  the  two  of  them  hadn't  been  careful  —  covered  head  to  toe  after  escaping  out  an  employee  entrance,  masks  and  hats  and  everything  that  no  one  would  suspect  in  the  dead  of  winter.  there  wasn't  a  day  that  went  by  where  yeona  didn't  go  over  all  the  things  that  could  go  wrong,  and  even  when  catching  up  with  someone  she  considered  now  a  friend,  she  left  as  little  room  as  possible  for  the  tables  to  turn  unfavorably.

"it's  my  pleasure,"  yeona  says  gently,  softly,  the  corners  of  her  lips  curving  upwards  as  she  glances  across  the  table.  skye  reminds  her  so  much  of  herself  in  the  strangest  ways  —  the  manners,  the  politeness,  the  teetering  between  that  might  be  considered  overly  familiar  and  not  familiar  enough.  it's  like  she  can  detect  him  overthinking,  can  feel  how  his  mind  flits  between  choices,  like  he's  nervous  that  one  wrong  slip  up  might  cost  him  something.  it's  the  same  way  she  thinks  each  and  every  day,  and  the  same  way  she  feels  even  now,  even  when  she's  far  enough  from  their  company  building  that  she  shouldn't  feel  the  weight  of  the  world  on  her  shoulders.

"you're  soaked,  chibi,"  the  familiar  nickname  rolls  off  her  tongue  as  she  shakes  herself  off  in  the  entryway  of  KISMET's  dormitory,  and  even  though  she  thinks  both  her  and  mio  look  like  little  drowned  mice,  she  can't  help  but  smile  fondly  at  the  younger  girl.

though  she  had  never  been  one  to  dream  of  having  a  sibling  (  the  burden  of  her  mother's  impossible  expectations  something  she  would  much  rather  shoulder  alone  than  expose  to  someone  else  of  her  own  flesh  and  blood  )  she  imagines  that  what  she  and  mio  has  is  as  close  as  one  can  get  to  a  family  bond.  it's  safe,  it's  fun,  it's  all  sunshine  and  rainbows  and  strawberry  cake  with  whipped  cream  icing  —  a  small  slice  of  vibrancy  in  an  otherwise  tension-filled  world  she  seemed  to  be  navigating.

when  she  was  with  mio,  the  worst  thing  that  happened  was  their  favorite  café  being  closed,  a  far  cry  from  the  usual  troubles  she  normally  faced  both  in  and  outside  of  kh  entertainment.

"you'll  catch  a  cold,"  she  says  gently,  fussing  over  the  younger  girl  much  like  she  does  with  her  own  members.  the  fact  that  the  rain  was  more  so  a  cool  relief  from  the  blistering  heat  compared  to  something  that  could  make  them  sick  is  lost  on  her,  at  least  for  the  moment  as  she  reaches  over  and  affectionally  wipes  some  raindrops  off  of  the  other's  shoulder.

"want  to  dry  off  for  a  bit  before  tackling  the  outside  world  again?"  yeona  smiles  again,  leaning  back  to  look  towards  the  entrance  of  their  dorm  before  her  attention  returns  to  the  door.  the  rain  might  have  interrupted  their  initial  plans,  but  she  was  sure  they'd  find  something  to  do.  "or  should  we  throw  caution  to  the  wind  and  go  jump  in  some  puddles?"

"should we look at the memory wall first?," she asks, and means - of course - to pick out a picture to ask yeona about, the sort of thing that'll keep their viewership engaged but might actually be fun to talk about with a friend. it's lucky she's here with yeona and not someone she knows less well, or on her own. there's only so much you can say about the glimpses your colleagues offer into their private lives, or the clipped interviews shown on the screens throughout the exhibition.

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐋𝐎𝐖  𝐇𝐔𝐌  𝐎𝐅  𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍  𝐈𝐒  𝐎𝐃𝐃𝐋𝐘  𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆,  like  the  natural  limiting  effect  of  using  vintage  equipment  somehow  softened  the  organized  pandemonium  around  them.  it's  a  scene  that  she's  long  grown  accustomed  to  standing  in,  with  veteran  staff  leaning  in  to  touch  up  her  makeup  and  newer,  doe-eyed  hopefuls,  fussing  over  how  her  clothes  are  laying.  oddly  enough,  the  hustle  and  bustle  surrounding  them  makes  her  feel  a  little  more  comfortable,  a  little  more  calm,  given  that  all  of  her  time  off-screen  made  it  feel  like  her  heart  was  going  to  burst  out  from  her  chest.  for  once,  it's  nice  to  be  in  a  place  where  things  are  laid  out  and  there's  a  script  to  follow,  and  it  certainly  helps  that  she's  not  alone  in  this.

it's  a  little  ironic,  considering  whenever  she's  been  in  front  of  the  camera,  she's  always  been  a  little  more  on  the  stiff  side,  but  yeona  actually  finds  the  time  visiting  the  exhibition  today  to  be  the  most  fun  she's  had  in  a  while,  even  when  it's  meant  to  be  work  and  something  solely  taped  to  attract  their  fans.

"that  sounds  like  a  great  idea,"  comes  her  easy  reply,  genuine,  soft,  the  edges  of  her  mouth  curving  upwards  as  she  looks  over  at  the  other  female.  to  the  naked  eye,  it  might  look  like  the  two  of  them  would  be  an  odd  pairing  —  on  the  surface,  natsumi  and  yeona  may  not  have  been  the  most  likely  of  friends,  but  it's  clear  to  see  their  close  from  how  her  shoulders  relax  and  she  nods  along  in  tandem  with  the  other.

truthfully,  she's  very  thankful  that  natsumi  had  been  the  one  chosen  for  what  kh  entertainment  had  been  dubbing  a  y2k-esque  walkthrough  of  the  exhibition.  it's  meant  to  have  a  nostalgic  feel,  and  they've  gone  as  far  as  having  the  staff  use  a  number  of  old  camcorders,  focused  on  capturing  the  warbly,  drifting  effect  that  comes  with  watching  something  from  the  late  90s  and  early  2000s.  make  sure  you  act  like  old  friends,  the  senior  staff  had  insisted,  but  luckily,  yeona  thought  that  would  be  easy  consider  her  and  the  other  were  old  friends.

"look,  sumi-ah,"  yeona  says  as  the  two  of  them  approach  the  memory  wall,  her  eyes  lighting  up  and  her  smile  widening,  slender  index  finger  pointing  towards  a  photograph  pinned  up  on  the  wall  in  front  of  them.  it's  from  a  few  years  ago,  a  little  weathered  at  the  edges,  most  likely  on  purpose,  but  still  brings  back  the  recollection  like  it  were  yesterday.  there,  standing  in  the  middle  of  a  stage,  stands  natsumi,  eyes  bright  and  smile  beaming.  the  staff  zoom  in  on  the  photo  before  taking  a  step  back,  focusing  on  the  two  girls  and  their  exchange.  "isn't  this  your  debut  stage?  you  look  so  cute!"

𝐭𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐡 :

he glanced down at the thumb drive in his hand, then back up at her, noticing the way the light caught the edge of her expression. his usual defense mechanism was just to act unbothered, to drop a dry comment and move on, but the silence between them felt too heavy for a joke. "sorry. i was just dropping something off here. you don't have to go."

𝐈𝐓'𝐒  𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄  𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒  𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃  𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅  𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑,  her  thoughts  swimming  beneath  the  surface,  limbs  weighted,  lungs  filling  up  with  salt,  his  voice  sounding  distant  and  near  all  in  the  same  breath,  filtered,  a  low-frequency  pressure  that  she  can  hardly  distinguish  from  the  thumping  of  her  own  heart.  of  all  the  people  she  could  have  crossed  paths  with  here,  kang  taeoh  was  the  last  person  she  suspected  would  walk  through  that  door.  and,  admittedly,  perhaps  the  last  person  she  wanted  to  see  on  a  night  like  this.  a  night  where  she  was  so  close  to  coming  undone  at  the  seams,  succumbing  to  the  fears  that  had  tethered  themselves  to  her  heart.

she  felt  beaten,  broken,  and  exhausted  from  holding  her  entire  world  together  by  what  seemed  like  a  thread,  and  yet,  fate  laughs  in  her  face,  cruel,  sending  her  the  very  person  who  told  her  the  last  time  that  they  were  alone  in  a  dark  room  that  there  was  no  point  in  continuing  their  relationship  if  she  was  so  terrified  of  the  consequences  of  them  being  together  that  she  couldn't  even  look  him  in  the  eyes.

something  sharp  wedges  itself  into  her  ribcage,  and  it  takes  every  ounce  of  her  strength  not  to  show  it  on  her  face.  the  whole  thing  is  disorienting.  she  sits  here  now,  sinking  into  the  abyss  of  one  of  her  lowest  moments,  only  to  come  face  to  face  with  the  very  person  who  had  once  been  a  synonym  with  safety,  only  for  him  to  have  shut  her  out  soon  after.  the  emotional  whiplash  twists  the  dagger  in  her  heart,  her  mind  flashing  through  moments  of  tenderness,  her  nestled  in  a  warm  embrace,  only  for  him  to  turn  cold  the  next,  calling  on  her  weakness,  her  fears.  and  like  the  coward  she  was  back  then,  she  could  do  nothing  to  stop  him  —  or  worse,  prove  him  wrong,  even  when  her  heart  wanted  so  desperately  to  fight  for  what  the  two  of  them  had.

every  fiber  of  her  being  screams  at  her  to  run,  to  escape  this  uncomfortable  situation  as  quickly  as  possible.  it  had  been  three  years  since  the  two  of  them  had  crossed  paths  without  a  purpose,  without  it  being  for  their  careers,  and  yet  it  feels  like  everything  had  just  happened  yesterday  with  how  raw  her  emotions  feel  tonight.

"don't  be  sorry,"  the  words  come  out  automatically,  soft,  practiced,  but  sincere.  it's  an  odd  hybrid  of  yeona's  genuine  feelings  and  natural  instinct  to  not  want  someone  else  to  feel  bad  about  something  that  wasn't  their  fault  and  nari's  readiness  to  be  polite  and  to  shrink  her  own  uncomfortableness  when  facing  someone  else.  yeona  by  nature  didn't  want  him  apologizing  for  walking  into  a  room  he  had  every  right  to  be  in,  but  there  was  also  something  in  her,  perhaps  an  automatic  professionalism,  that  both  her  mother  and  kh  entertainment  had  instilled  in  her  to  the  point  it  sometimes  overrode  her  own  emotions.

"i'm  sorry  if  i  surprised  you,"  she  says  a  beat  later,  apologizing  on  instinct,  taking  the  blame  as  she  always  does  for  simply  existing.  she swallows gently, guilt  flooding  her  as  her  mind  finally  processes  his  words  in  full.  i  didn't  think  anyone  would  be  booked  here  this  late,  the  words  echo  in  the  space  between  them  and  yeona  feels  her  ears  burn,  ashamed, caught, turning  back  to  the  monitor  before  her,  one  window  open,  blank,  obviously  untouched,  obviously  unused,  and obviously  just  used  as  a  decoy,  toggled  on  in  the  event  that  someone  took  a  quick  glance  through  the  glass  as  they  were  walking  past.

yeona  reaches  over  and  clicks  out  of  whatever  random  application  she  had  opened,  hoping  he'll  think  that  she  just  doesn't  want  anyone  to  see  what  she's  allegedly  working  on,  not  that  she's  come  in  here  under  the  guise  of  working  just  so  she  can  cry  alone  in  a  dark  room.  she  shuffles  out  of  the  seat  then,  turning  back  to  him  with  all  the  courage  she  can  muster,  and  smiles,  gently,  softly,  like  she's  been  trained  to  do  so  for  the  entirety  of  her  life.  "oh,  okay,  thank  you,"  she  says,  gesturing  to  the  desk,  an  invitation  for  him  to  do  whatever  he  needs  to  do,  urging  herself  to  calm  the  fight  or  flight  response  humming  in  her  veins.  "here,  let  me  get  out  of  your  way,"  she  continues,  stepping  off  to  the  side,  a  safe  distance  away,  ironic  considering  once  before  she  had  been  so  desperate  to  be  close  to  him.  "are  you  sure  you  don't  need  to  use  the  room?  i  can  come  back  another  time."

instead, she leans over to yeona, who had been her companion for the day in the studio and starts bugging older member who seem rather concentrated on her task than yubin will ever be today. in rare occasions of her being the annoying young sibling vibes, she squints over the words that yeona has written before letting out a dramatized gasp over what seems to be some lyrics written with tones of romance. "who are you writing about, unnie?"

𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄  𝐌𝐄  𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘  𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋  𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆,  the  words  thread  themselves  into  the  page,  pencil  scratching  against  the  paper  like  the  warm  breeze,  light,  airy,  sincere,  like  they  were  pouring  out  from  her  like  a  steam  of  consciousness.  for  someone  who  thought  so  carefully  on  her  words,  on  her  next  move,  on  what  the  consequences  would  be  for  breathing  too  hard,  looking  at  something  too  long,  and  everything  else  in  between,  the  lyrics  poured  themselves  out  through  the  graphite  without  hesitation.  yeona  jots  down  another  line,  love  resembles  only  a  misty  dream  —  only  for  reality  to  come  crashing  down  on  her  again,  this  time  in  the  form  of  her  companion's  voice,  and  all  too  quickly  the  older  female  is  holding  her  notepad  to  her  chest.

"oh,  binnie-ah,"  she  laughs,  cheeks  tinting  pink,  obviously  startled,  though  she  tries  to  take  advantage  of  the  moment  by  hiding  away  her  lyrics  under  the  guise  of  simply  being  surprised.  "you  scared  me,"  the  words  come  out  gentle,  playful  even,  and  she  tries  to  inconspicuously  flip  over  the  notebook  so  it's  facing  down  in  her  lap.

"i'm  not  writing  about  anyone,  silly,"  she  says,  perhaps  too  casually,  too  nonchalantly,  but  yeona  has  long  since  been  trained  in  the  art  of  diminishing  her  feelings,  hiding  away  her  heart  so  it  never  saw  the  light  of  day.  maybe  that's  why  she's  so  surprised  that  today's  session  came  so  easily  to  her  —  even  on  a  good  day,  yeona  was  not  musically  inclined  in  the  same  way  yubin  and  many  of  her  other  groupmates  (  and  other  idols  at  large  )  were.  she  was  a  good  enough  singer,  a  good  enough  dancer,  perhaps  leaning  above  average  industry  standards  if  one  squinted  hard  enough,  but  her  talents  didn't  lie  in  producing,  writing  lyrics,  or  even  really  much  of  anything  when  it  came  to  the  behind  the  scenes  magic  that  came  with  creating  a  title  track.

oftentimes,  she  simply  came  with  yubin  to  these  sessions  for  moral  support,  wanting  to  be  there  for  someone  close  to  her,  not  because  she  ever  was  any  good  at  vocalizing  anything  worth  debuting.  yeona  was  good  at  being  there  for  people  she  loved,  and  she  also  wasn't  half  bad  at  modeling,  but  creating  something  beautiful  through  words  and  compositions  like  yubin  could  —  well,  that  really  wasn't  her  strong  suit.

"want  to  take  a  walk  to  clear  your  head?"  she  offers,  trying  to  pivot  the  conversation  away  from  what  she's  spilled  out  on  paper.  "maybe  inspiration  will  strike  you  if  we  get  some  ice  cream."  surely,  that  was  a  great  distraction,  wasn't  it?

he goes back to his work, just to finish it up as he awaits for the other to make her way up to the apartment.

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐒𝐔𝐍  𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐒  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓  𝐈𝐍  𝐀  𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐌  𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐖,  golden  light  filtering  in  from  the  windows,  saturating  everything  it  touches  in  glimpses  of  sunset,  kissed  in  bright  vermilions,  saturated  in  marmalade,  and  for  the  first  time  in  what  feels  like  a  lifetime,  the  tension  that  had  knotted  itself  in  her  slender  limbs  slowly  begins  to  release.  the  door  to  his  apartment  is  opened  with  great  care,  yeona's  shoulder  tucking  in  against  the  cold  metal,  balancing  the  plant  and  using  it  for  leverage  to  push  the  weight  of  entrance  open.  even  in  the  midst  of  carrying  something  so  awkwardly  during  the  height  of  the  summer  solstice,  having  trekked  through,  arguably,  half  of  seoul,  the  sight  of  a  familiar  safe  haven  lifts  her  spirits.

the  aircon  lifts  the  loose  strands  falling  out  of  her  cap,  and  the  sight  of  flourishing  greenery  and  her  friend  standing  in  the  midst  of  it  all,  only  makes  yeona  smile,  bright  and  airy  and  relaxed,  something  she  hasn't  felt  in  quite  a  while.

"a  little  help  here,  please,"  she  says,  a  little  breathless,  half  from  the  giggle  that  escapes  her  and  half  because  as  relieved  as  she  was  to  be  in  the  air  conditioning  safety  net  of  iseul's  apartment,  the  humidity  that  hung  heavy  across  the  city  still  felt  like  it  was  weighing  on  her  shoulders.  she  adjusts  her  weight  as  she  slips  off  her  shoes,  the  door  clicking  and  locking  behind  her  as  she  maneuvers  her  way  inside.  the  plant  isn't  all  the  heavy,  but  after  carrying  it  through  such  a  treacherous  journey,  she  would  be  thankful  for  a  little  bit  of  assistance.

the  branches  of  the  plant  seem  to  greet  iseul  once  he  takes  notice,  shaking  gently  as  yeona  takes  a  step  forward,  mandarins  swaying  gently  as  if  to  introduce  themselves.  the  vocalist  can't  help  but  smile  a  little  wider  as  they  move,  offering  the  plant  up  to  her  friend  with  a  gentle  and  warm  'ta-da!'  once  he  wanders  over.

"congrats  on  your  almost  tenth  anniversary,"  she  says  after  a  beat,  shifting  her  weight  from  foot  to  foot.  "i  read  that  mandarins  bring  you  a  lot  of  good  luck  and  prosperity,  so  i  thought  it  was  fitting  for  this  occasion,"  a  pause,  her  smile  turning  a  little  shy,  hopeful.  "i  hope  you  like  it."

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐒𝐔𝐍  𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐒  𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐘  𝐎𝐍  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊  𝐎𝐅  𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐊,  the  singe  of  summer  sinking  into  the  sliver  of  exposed  skin,  making  the  already  hot  and  humid  and  uncomfortable  temperatures  all  the  more  unbearable.  it  doesn't  help  that  her  hands  are  full  either,  only  adding  to  the  discomfort  she's  been  enduring  for  the  better  half  of  forty  minutes.  nevertheless,  desperate  times  called  for  desperate  measures,  and  if  being  in  the  entertainment  industry  has  taught  her  anything,  it's  that  sometimes  the  best  way  to  fly  under  the  radar  is  to  put  yourself  in  plain  sight.  after  all,  the  last  thing  that  dispatch,  staff  members  or  die-hard  fans  would  expect  is  to  see  an  idol  coasting  down  the  streets  with  a  mandarin  plant  in  hand.  to  the  naked  eye,  the  vocalist  looks  just  like  some  delivery  driver,  dressed  in  all  black,  mask  and  hat  in  tow,  long  hair  stuffed  underneath,  carrying  a  large  plant  and  suffering  underneath  the  summer  sun  like  the  rest  of  seoul.

it's  the  perfect  disguise  —  well,  at  least  yeona  hopes  so,  given  anything  that  even  remotely  involves  having  to  sneak  around  has  her  heart  beating  a  thousand  miles  per  second.  even  when  she's  doing  something  innocent,  like  giving  a  gift  to  one  of  her  close  friends,  it  feels  like  she  needs  to  go  to  extremes  to  make  sure  no  one  suspects  it's  actually  her.

"iseul-ah,  it's  me,"  her  voice  is  soft,  delicate,  hardly  above  a  whisper  as  she  hits  the  intercom  to  his  apartment,  adjusting  the  giant  plant  in  one  arm  so  she  can  pull  her  mask  down  slightly  and  show  her  face  to  the  camera.  she  tugs  the  fabric  under  her  chin  and  smiles,  holding  up  the  plant  for  him  to  see.  "i  brought  you  something,"  she  says,  gently  shaking  the  mandarins  for  good  measure.  she  had  read  that  gifting  such  a  plant  would  bring  good  fortune,  abundance  and  prosperity  to  the  receiver,  so  there  was  no  doubt  in  her  mind  who  she  should  gift  one  too  —  as  the  psuedo-parents  of  two  rather  energetic  groups,  there  were  times  where  the  two  of  them  needed  all  the  luck  they  could  get. not  to  mention  the  last  time  she'd  visited  the  co-leader,  she  thought  his  apartment  could  use  the  tiniest  touch  of  some  color.  orange  really  went  well  with  earth  tones,  didn't  it? 

yeona  takes  a  step  back  once  she  hears  the  intercom  crackle,  pulling  her  mask  up  for  good  measure  until  her  friend  opens  the  door.  it  occurs  to  her  in  the  moments  before  he  invites  her  in  that  really,  if  dispatch  or  any  news  outlet  did  get  their  hands  on  this,  it  certainly  would  be  quite  a  silly  story.
