"I'm so glad you think so." Hartley smiles, leaving her hand on his chest even after she smooths his shirt to her satisfaction.
As he continues, Hartley tilts her head coyly. "Why, darling, are you trying to get me alone?"
She's more than happy to go, if she's reading this right. Thinks that he's right, in that a kiss like that is better had somewhere private - and she'd be delighted to go continue somewhere there aren't eyes on them.
"well," Isaiah smiles at her, giving his shoulders an easy shrug. "maybe i am. would uh, you be opposed to that?"
Isaiah's tongue flicks out and runs over his lips, wetting them very lightly.
"i'll be honest my hotel room ain't exactly the ritz, but... s'clean. bed's comfy too." A pause. "if you were curious about that, of course."
he can tell that his patient is uncomfortable. hospital anxiety's rather common and most people only wound up in the emergency department when they were either scared or desperate. to help sass feel more at ease while he talks to them, connor lowers himself into one of the chairs beside the bed to get on the same level. ❝ we don't care about that when we've got the job to make sure you're alright before we send you off. don't worry about that. ❞ whoever's in charge of billing's got profitability covered. connor's looked at some of the ridiculous lists of itemized charges.
his blue eyes leave sass's to the monitors. so far, they seem hemodynamically stable which is a good sign for any serious injury, but he wants to be sure before he agrees to sign any discharge papers. ❝ are you visiting? sorry it hit such a sour note. i'm assuming you aren't in chicago to get a personal tour of the gaffney er. ❞ he's hoping a little bit of affable banter will help them relax.
then he takes out his tablet to skim over the notes from the nurses before connor's eyes return to sass's in time to listen to the questions. ❝ we check for bleeding with an abdominal ct. i'll have to have you drink some nasty tasting liquid for that. do you mind if i apply some pressure to your limbs and ribs to check for tenderness? maybe we can avoid some of the xrays if we're throwing too much at you right now. ❞
"okay, yeah, maybe you don't care but i care? like i care a little bit. hospital bills are expensive." Not that they knew much about them. Their experience with hospitals was limited. And they'd been on their parent's insurance when they'd been in hospital care before anyway.
Now they didn't have that luxury. They'd have to pay for this themself, and sure, they could commit some fraud-- it wasn't like they cared about that shit-- but they didn't like the idea of getting caught for fraud. Or stolen credit cards. Or any of that bullshit. They'd have to go on the run! Live in their car or something! Nightmare scenario!
"yeah, i was in town for a job." Vague but true. Dr. Rhodes didn't need the full details to treat them, or so they assumed. It wasn't how they got hurt, anyhow. But they do at least crack a smile at his comment. "nah, wasn't my plan. but you guys have some cool tech here. i saw your weird er-or when i came in."
The notes on Sass are brief-- mostly because, as the notes mention, they were being a little difficult. They'd only give their name as Sass, no emergency contact. Hadn't wanted to change into the hospital gown. Medically, however, they'd come in by ambulance after someone called to report a person collapsed on the sidewalk. They'd been unconscious through most of the ride into the ed, but had woken up just before arrival and then complained about everything since they'd gotten here.
They'd said they didn't know why they collapsed, they'd just been walking back to their hotel and passed out. Their stomach hurt beforehand, but they'd noted having IBS and hadn't thought much about the stomach pain. They'd also given a brief medical history, an allergy to penicillin, having had a hysterectomy and having a very bad reaction to the anesthesia after the surgery, and no vaccination history.
"ct. is that the one where i have to hold my breath?" They aren't exactly opposed to it, but they are curious. They frown a little, though. They don't want the doctor to touch them, really, but it seemed like it would probably be pretty cost saving. They weigh both options, then nod and slowly push the blanket down to sit around their legs. "yeah, go for it, i guess."

Isaiah looks back at him, his expression only reading simple curiosity. He knew plenty of folks who didn't believe in God. Knew plenty of folks who did believe but, like Thistle, wanted nothing to do with him. It was always an interesting concept to Isaiah, to either not believe or not respect.
And now, many may call Isaiah oblivious, but that wasn't true. He could tell Thistle wasn't interested in this conversation, he could tell that easily enough. Didn't make Isaiah any less curious, nor did it make him want to drop the issue. He hums, leans back, and gives a small nod.
"can i ask why, or am i gonna get told off for it?" Even if he would get told off for it, it was possible he'd ask anyway. Isaiah hadn't quite decided yet.
Kevin wants to give another biting remark, but as the adrenaline started to fade he was just glad the guy hadn't gone in for another hit. Besides his supposedly natural charm, his mug was his only real advantage. Lightly, he touches his nose, wincing though he's not sure if it's broken...he praying it isn't.
He just wants this to be something he can tidy up and pretend didn't happen. He didn't show bruises or blemishes to the world, and he didn't intend to start tonight. Though that was most likely another reason he was feeling extra unfriendly. This stranger was seeing him vulnerable, physically damaged...that wasn't how he wanted his first impression with people to go.
"Don't worry. I'm not so weak that a punch is gonna take me out..." Kevin pushes himself up, glad at least that no one else seems to be paying him, or the strange guy any mind. "You gonna help me up, or are you just here to gawk?" His hand is already outstretched, expecting the courtesy even before it's confirmed.
"glad to hear it." Isaiah says with a simple shrug. He does take Kevin's hand, however, and helps him stand. The feeling of their hands touching is just a little odd. It isn't so much an electric shock that Kevin will feel when their hands connect it's much too mild for that.
But there is something about it that just feels off. Strange. And at the same time? The pain in his nose lessens just slightly.
And then Isaiah lets go. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small packet of tissues and opens it, and offers one up to Kevin.
"not exactly a handkerchief, but uh. s'all i got on me." He murmurs with a smile.
Fabian grunted when the guy didn't just politely fuck off. Instead, he stuck around, and Fabian gripped his beer tighter. He kept reminding himself he was out now, out of the concrete and razor wire hell that had been his life for half a decade. The rules were different out here. He couldn't swing at someone for invading his space. Even if that person was fucking weird, like this guy. There was something about him that made Fabian's skin crawl, but he couldn't point it out. He didn't like when people looked at him like that regardless.
Reluctantly, he took the poster and his narrowed eyes ran over it. He'd never seen the poor sap. He'd just gotten out of prison, how the fuck was he supposed to have seen him? He'd only been in this city for days.
"No." He held it out back to the stranger. "Ain't never seen him. No offense but I got my own damn problems to deal with."
Despite Fabian's obvious dislike, maybe even discomfort, Isaiah doesn't look away. In fact, he looks at the other rather earnestly, slightly hopeful to boot. It's not surprising that Fabian hasn't seen Elijah, it seems like no one's ever seen Elijah. Some would come to the conclusion Elijah must be dead by now, but not Isaiah. He was sure if Elijah was dead he'd know somehow.
No, his brother wasn't dead. Just remarkably good at hiding.
"keep it. just in case." Isaiah says, giving the poster a small nod. "and of course. we all have problems."
A tiny smile breaks out on Isaiah's face, "trust in the lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. proverbs 3:5-6. that verse, uh. is a good one to lean on, in times of tribulation."

"Hartley." She presses another kiss to his cheek before she sits up straighter, uncurling her fist from his clothes and smoothing a hand over them to remove any wrinkles she might have definitely caused.
"I'd say I don't usually go around kissing strangers, but I do typically ask first." She says wryly, reaching out to take a sip of her drink. "Though I cant say I'd be disappointed if it happened again."
"hartley, it's a pleasure." Isaiah says, giving her a small nod and glancing down as she smooths out his shirt. He can't help but snort, giving his head a small shake.
"ain't no trouble." His eyes search hers, curious. "it's new years. some things c'n be forgiven, can't they?"
Lots of things can be forgiven, actually, but Isaiah doesn't start preaching at her-- though he very well could. "kiss like that's usually better set for somewhere private. dontcha think?"
This was the first time, the first real time, that Fabian was in a bar. He'd gone in at eighteen, rotted for five years, and here he was at twenty three, drinking his first proper beer. Truth be told, he craved the noise, craved the hustle and bustle. It was too quiet at home, the silence piercing his ears like red hot needles. He needed noise. It was all he'd known for half a decade.
He grunted when someone sat beside him, glaring at them when they decided to speak. He didn't want to talk, just wanted to exist.
"The fuck you want?"
Isaiah isn't put off by the man's annoyance. There's no point in getting angry every time someone snapped at him, especially in a bar. He offers up a smile that's just a little creepy, even if he doesn't mean it to be. There's just something about Isaiah that gives off an unsettling vibe.
Slowly, he nods and reaches into his pocket and produces a piece of folded paper. He unfolds it and offers it out to Fabian. It's a missing person's flyer. On it is a young man, blonde, and in a straw hat that shadows a lot of his face. The poster explains this is Elijah Renoylds, last seen nearly ten years ago in South Carolina. If you've seen him, there's a phone number to contact.
"have you seen this person?" Isaiah asks plainly. "he'll be older now, of course, and he's got a scar on his face, right here." Isaiah demonstrates, drawing a finger up from his lip to his ear.
"that's my brother. i've been searchin' for him."

It's been a long day.
It's been a long day and Isaiah Renoylds is damn tired of long days. But that doesn't mean they're gonna stop coming anytime soon. He sits down at the bar, running a hand over his face and glancing in the person's direction that is next to him. Guy looks like shit, sure, but Isaiah's never been that tactful.
"can i ask you somethin'?" His accent isn't that thick, but there's still a little twang to his voice. "it's real important to me."
New Year Starters
"Will you kiss me at midnight?"
"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"
"Got any champagne?"
"I'm got doing the ball drop this year."
"I'd rather be home than freezing outside."
"I really don't get the big deal."
"Here's hoping the new year is better than the last."

"Let's go out to celebrate."
"Want to go to a party?"
"This is the perfect way to ring in the new year."

"I just want to go to bed early tonight. Does that make me old?"
"I think I drank too much."
"Let's get a cab."

Hartley had expected this to be a quick thing, really. A throwaway kiss to ring in the new year but - clearly her seat neighbour is into it.
He caresses her cheek, and Hartley brings her other hand to settle on his shoulder. This probably isn't the place to be kissing like this, but Hartley's kissed in worse places, and been shot disapproving looks for a lot less.
Finally, Hartley breaks the kiss, but she doesn't move far as she catches her breath - pressing a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
"Happy New Year, baby." She smiles. "Can I get a name, after a performance like that?"
Isaiah similarly doesn't delve much into PDA, but, hey. It's New Year's Eve, isn't it? Doesn't he deserve to have just a little bit of fun? He figures at least some of the folks out on the floor are going to be doing a little more than kissing anyhow.
"happy new year." Isaiah murmurs, raising a brow at her and then just smiling. "isaiah. what about you. do i uh, get th'name of my surprise new year's kiss?"

Isaiah hadn't seen it happen, but he'd heard the crack of someone's fist connecting with someone else's body. He hadn't come running, but he'd come over all the same. Whoever had attacked the man on the ground had taken a look at Isaiah and had gone running, which was fine. Isaiah didn't like to take up fights with humans, if he could help it.
Kevin was... Irate, to see Isaiah. Also fine, Isaiah was used to people being unsettled-- even frightened by his presence. He only snorts softly, kneeling down and offering out a hand to the other man.
"just makin' sure you're still here on earth with us living folk. seems like y'took quite a hit."
