I think I need to preface this by saying that I obviously don't know Dan and know shit all about what he's thinking and what was going thru his head this whole time, and I am only talking about how I think I'd feel in his situation.

Coz I just think that if I'd have spent so many years terrified and in the closet, I too would probably write off marriage as useless and not something I'd want. Its out of my reach anyway, so what's the point in wanting? And if I then came out of the closet and later announced my relationship, and saw that it's Fine and Accepted, I'd probably need to re-evaluate my stance on a lot of things, you know?
