Y'know, between this and Green Day (again), this brings up something I've noticed

Conservatives are DESPERATE to claim x piece of major fiction in pop culture/media as "theirs" or endorsing their (deplorable) values, and time and again it's something that is deeply progressive at its core

Why is this? Why can't they just like their own stuff?

Because conservative fiction isn't popular, it lacks widespread interest

Conservative fiction lacks mass market appeal

And they just can't accept that, they are desperate to believe their values are what's widely held by people, and to fit with this fiction, they must imagine that popular fiction/media favors them

This is a good dunking, but I'm gonna provide some pushback to the idea that conservative fiction "lacks mass market appeal". It doesn't. You could say that outspokenly culture-war-style conservative media doesn't have mass appeal, but that doesn't mean that right-wing worldviews are absent from media. Most fiction in general has a status-quo-affirming nature, and many blockbusters over the years have had conservative ontologies embedded in them. Perfect examples of this include superhero movies, fantasy epics, and copaganda.

Most superhero films nowadays present liberal social values in choice areas, but their MO tends to center around imperialism and surveillance apologia and a Great Man worldview; they are liberal in their surface-level features, yet deeply supportive of power and wealth and national myths on a more substantive level (analogous to capitalist "democracies" in general).

Blockbuster fantasy epics usually confine themselves to feudalism or another pre-capitalist era, a time long ago that we can look back to — either with disdain ("thank god we've progressed past those simpletons and reached the end of history!") or with reverence ("wow times were so much better back then, we need to return to tradition and monarchies!"). Though you can't paint the whole genre with that brush, lots of popular stuff from it over the years have had clear right-wing narratives.

Copaganda is prevalent in popular shows and movies, where even in the "socially liberal" examples (like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, among others) there is still a taken-for-granted assumption that police are the best way to solve social problems.

At best, most media is inoffensive status quo affair (so anywhere from centrist to center-right in its worldview implications). At worst, popular stuff affirms right-wing myths and worldviews in a way that is more subtle than the flailing culture war stuff implied by the above Fox News host.

(And to be clear, if you enjoy any of this media it doesn't make you a Bad Person™ in dire need of Protestant-leftist self-flagellation or whatever. I mostly just wanted to post a response to this because it doesn't do us any good to underestimate our political enemies and those we wish to win over to the left. Right-wing worldviews are unfortunately common and people on the left need to understand that they often manifest in ways that aren't as obvious as, say, evangelical Christian movies or Fox News whinging about diversity in Star Wars.)
